The Rebbe refrences in a Sicha how the Frierdike Rebbe had difficulty speaking after the stroke. You can hear how much effort goes into every word and how it is precious and measured.

Less than two months before himself suffering a stroke, the Rebbe said that like Moses, the Frierdiker Rebbe was “heavy of mouth and heavy of tongue.” כבד פה וכבד לשון”, and that just as G-d appointed Aaron to serve as the mouthpiece of Moses to carry his messages to the masses, Hashem took the Rebbe’s speech, intending that we would serve as the Rebbe’s spokespersons and Aarons, carrying his message and Torah far and wide. The very fact that people in the world still experience pain and suffering is due to the mystical truth that God's Divine Presence in the world, the Shechinah, is still suffering along with us in our temporary condition of spiritual exile and the continuing destruction of His dwelling place, the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.

Saying "voice of the exile" is a complex and nuanced statement. Exile is not a good thing. It imposes limitations and distortions. Yes, we had great leaders as we suffered with exile, but even they saw with dark opaque clouds covering their vision.

It's been around for many years, but no one was ever able to figure out the words. Then about a year ago someone tracked down the original Sicha transcript and was able to transcribe the recording in Yiddish. This is the first time it has been translated and published in English. Yeah, the Frierdiker Rebbe does describe in his personal diaries just how much he suffered at the hands of the communists, but this is something else. He was arrested and released by the Russians in 1927, while this recording is from 13 Tammuz (the summer of) 1949, the last celebratory Farbrengen commemorating his victory over the communists before he passed. The full recording is 2:45 but a lot of it is flat noise, and there are a few more less audible parts and a few isolated words. We trimmed it down to be seamless, and we also only started a little bit in. I believe he is saying that all rebbeim previously always asked what do you remember? which means to say its all good to learn but you have to internalise it and make sure it stays in your mind and this was something pon the forefront of the mind.

@yonah9983 The Frierdiker Rebbe actually mentions this practice quite a lot throughout the Sichos, if I remember correctly I believe the main intent was to train Chabad Chassidim from the earliest age to be able to call to mind and vividly recall how authentic Yiddishkeit (Chassidishkeit) used to be in years gone by, in an earlier more refined generation (the opposite of Yeridos Hadoros). Welcome to the channel Yonah!
