Hey there, I know how much you enjoy using simple materials and all of a sudden, while watching you struggle cutting the railings, if using thread, stiffened up with PVA might make railing construction easier and thinner. Tape the vertical uprights extended, then glue the extended railings. after these dries, cut off the extended excess. May look cleaner. Just thought it may be a new media to experiment with. Great work! Don

That really was a labour of love, or a study in stubbornness (and maybe both). I do commend getting yourself a magnifying headset if you are going to keep attempting this kind of close work before you end up cross-eyed. The result is quite remarkable and very effective. I think it is also far closer to being truer to life that you have given yourself credit. Quite a few older fire escapes at the time looked decidedly dodgy and I always wondered how they passed inspection. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to be on them with too many other people. An excellent piece of work Michael as always. Stephen

Michael. I'm afraid I can't let this pass without comment. You've done some crazy things on this channel, but this time you have gone too far... You are familiar, no doubt, with the Fire Regulations of this country, and I suspect that these Fire Regulations apply even in darkest Yorkshire. I have scoured the regulations, and nowhere do they state that you can make fire escapes out of cardboard!!! Plastic does not appear in the permitted materials either. Steel is acceptable, as are some types of wood in some types of buildings, but Weetabix packets...? What were you thinking man. Nevertheless - what a build. Superb, as usual. So good, that I'm going to look the other way wrt the use of highly combustible materials on a fire escape. Have a relaxing week and come down after your hard work. You are pushing the boundaries all the time within N scale card modelling. Some folks get Knighthoods for less. Arise Sir Michal Scott. For services to N Scale Modelling.

Less than two pence in materials, Michael, but at what cost in mental health terms? And what about the family Wheetabix consumption? Still, the fire escape looks great, and is just the kind of detail needed at the back of these buildings. Come to think of it, I can't imagine why you haven't got another one, possibly spiral, running down the back of the Station Hotel... Thanks,, Tom

I have only recently discovered your channel and I'm amazed at the results you achieve on such a small scale. I was following your scratch building with inkscape series and was disappointed that part 4 of the industrial building appears to be missing. I realise that these videos take a lot of time and effort to produce but I can't help but wonder.... Has it been removed? Did you ever produce it? Do you plan to upload it at some point? Keep up the great work. 🙂
@Chandwell

Thank you Anthony, and welcome to Chandwell. I never did make Part 4. Those videos never seemed very popular and I wasn’t sure they were of much use to people. You’re not the first to ask about it recently though. I’ve learned a lot more since then and my techniques have changed a bit. Maybe I will make one of my upcoming Market Street buildings in a step-by-step style in Inkscape. Do you think that would be useful? Michael

Can imagine the eye strain, however the result looks great. Maybe an idea for a next one: just glue the individual stairwells on a paper beam, without the notches, just the lining. Do one side first and keep the stairwells proud. Then cut the stairwells to the desired width and glue on the second beam. With this method I make inspection stairways for storage tanks. But even in HO scale the result is eye strain indeed.

Michael, I appreciate your dedication. Making a fire escape from scratch is something I haven't attempted since the 1970's. Great job. The question I have however, based on my attempt, did you consider cutting straight strips of plastic. Then on the flat assembling the rails and stringers individually? In any event it's completed. Congratulations. Jim from the U.S.A.

Amazing as always. Wish I had even a fraction of your patience!! It would be great to see you revisit the scratch building with Inkscape series. Partly because I seem to recall there was a video missing, but more because I guess you've learned a lot since you originally did it. Maybe do it on a relatively straightforward building and then offer the building as a competition prize?
@Chandwell

You’re the second person to say that today. Maybe I should. That is a really good idea to do a new one. My next Market Street building is quite small so it would be a prime candidate to make an Inkscape series for. Maybe I could do the usual 5 or 10 minute video with an additional Inkscape tutorial attached. I don’t think I could bring myself to give away a building at the end though!! 😂😂😂 Michael
