I grew up by Grumman in Bethpage L. I. They sent the tomcats in pieces out to Calverton for the test flights. Shutting down the long Island Expressway as the parade of local police, Navy vehicles, blacked out suv's, and Grumman vehicles escorted the flatbeds that held the jet. It was awesome! Sad day when Grumman closed, being bought out by Northrop. Great video, brings back memories.

Maybe he's saving that one for his swansong. Because no flight disaster channel is complete without a recreation of what is basically considered the worst and most horrific disaster in commercial aviation history. I watched Allec's recreation of that disaster and I am still haunted by those images and the flight recorder audio. Allec did a masterful job on that one and I was on the edge of my seat the whole time feeling like I was actually on that plane. Hard to believe that a massive 521 people died in one single plane crash.

When the Tomcat that crashed was on final approach, her wings were extended forward. Your video simulation shows the wings swept back. The Tomcat's Central Air Data Computer would have commanded a forward sweep, because the airplane would have stalled and dropped like a rock otherwise. and if you look at actual video of the flight and crash, you will see the wings in the forward position. The video is available on the Discovery Channel's F-14 documentary. Also, your depiction of the cruise phase along the coast appears to show the Tomcat in an oversweep - that is the wings are swept back to the setting used to store the aircraft on the carrier. This is not the setting used in flight, even high speed flight. and in a low subsonic cruise, the wings would have been extended forward. However, note that the Tomcat's pilot could set the wing sweep manually if he wanted to. One last item: At the critical demonstration flight whose video was submitted to Congress prior to final authorization of full production, the nose landing gear suffered a hydraulic leak. It was embarrassing, but did not affect the outcome.

Laser guided bombs didnt exist in the 70's. And full wing sweep during the whole flight???
@johnosbourn4312
5 жыл бұрын
Actually, Laser Guided Bombs did exist in the '70s, because, during "Operation Linebacker-1", the Air Force flew the first combat sorties that employed the GBU-10 Laser Guided Bomb, but, such weapons were never tested on the F-14, until the Post Desert Storm Era, when the Navy was looking for an interim Deep Strike Platform, that would bridge the gap that opened up with the retirement of the A-6 Intruder Medium Bomber, and the eventual entry into service, of the A-12 Avenger-II Stealth Attack Aircraft. If you want to know all about the Tomcat morphing into a Prescision Strike Fighter, then I suggest picking up the 3rd Edtion of Squadron Signal's F-14 Tomcat In Action book, along with the second title in the Aircraft Specials Series, that covers the Tomcat, as well as the second of three Osprey Combat Aircraft Volumes on the F-14: "US NAVY F-14 TOMCAT UNITS OF OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM" COM.# 52.

That's too much of a minefield if you want the truth, starting with little details like the aircraft photographed flying into the south tower couldn't possibly be FLT 175 as it has a heavily and obviously modified fuselage that honest aviation buffs easily spot. Do a search for images of it and look _real_ close. And before you say "Photoshop!", why was one of the best photos of it published on 9/12/01 as the front page of the New York Post?

"Both pilots survived the crash" - awesome. The ejection seats worked from the start - good thinking. I worked for GE as a systems engineer on an infrared search and track system that we flight tested out of Pt Mugu, CA in 1987-88. Usually two aircraft per flight. The flight crews were top notch professionals. Most excellent experience. In 40 or 50 flights the planes performed flawlessly.

Flawlessly mostly due to the grounds crew plane captain "dailies", as we called them. A quick turn daily inspection took us over 30 mins to thoroughly check one over for the known problems.
