Phenomenal video. I purchased Powerboost about two months ago. I live on a ranch in Texas. Here are my thoughts, I was a little disappointed that getting 24 mpg is rare, BUT this is because a lot of the driving is at 70 mph and you aren’t getting the benefit of the electric motor. However , when I am in town I usually get 24mpg plus. Also, it’s Fast ! I tow a Travel trailer that is around 7k loaded and barely notice it. I swear it’s still 0-60 in 9 seconds or so. Also, I use the 7.2kw onboard all the time. I drag out welders, I power compressors, even to wash or fill up tires on the truck itself, I simply roll out my power washer or compressor and power them with the truck, no fooling with extension cables. I power the camper on quick over nights while traveling and the most fuel I’ve ever used was 1/8 tank, that was in 95+ degrees running the AC full time. It is, the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. I’m in love!

If Ford could get battery cost and weight low enough, a PHEV with a high-voltage pack that supports DCFC and 20 - 30 miles of range would up level up the F150 yet again. Drivers could get most of the benefits of an EV while still retaining the ability to low long distances when needed. Add four-wheel steering as a sweetener for Alex.

Agreed. For long distance towing, it's going to take a while to replace internal combustion from both a battery chemistry and charging infrastructure perspective for a full EV, but if you have a plug-in hybrid version of this exact truck that can do an average commute (or even half of it) on battery only, that's a big deal. We either use our Silverado for local errands, ~120 mile highway runs round trip lightly loaded, or long distance towing with a travel trailer. If we could do the errands on battery only and a 1/4 of an unloaded highway run on battery only, that's significant.

I’d love a PHEV F-150. Unfortunately the market just doesn’t seem to want PHEVs. I spend a lot of time answering questions about my Chevy Volt or Pacifica Hybrid, but most people don’t get it. “Only 60 km of electric range, and you have to put gas in it too? What good is that?”
@Remarksman
2 жыл бұрын
What Dylan said, 100 times over! Same with our Honda Clarity, people don’t get that we only put gas in it once every two or three months UNLESS we take a road trip, and then we CAN take a road trip of ANY distance we want. It’s wonderful and yet people seem to resist “getting it”.

For anybody that’s curious, I have an F-150 hybrid and average 20-21 mpg doing city driving in Florida. You definitely have to be gentle on the throttle and manipulate the car into going electric as often as possible. On flat ground, I’ve found that the car just will not go into full electric past 55 mph, but it’s great for when you are waiting at stop lights or coasting to a stop. Alex is right that the transition between gas and electric isn’t really the smoothest, and at low speeds, the 10-speed transmission can feel a little clunky and annoying at times because of constant gear shifting. Overall, I would still recommend it. It’s a great truck and has no issues towing.

@@JustDoinFlorida That sounds right. I occasionally tow 7x16 dual axle cargo trailer that has 7 foot interior height (kinda tall) and I get 10-11 mpg. I did have a 2016 Ram 2500 Cummins diesel which returned… wait for it… 10-11 mpg pulling the same trailer. The diesel pulled the trailer effortlessly, even in mountains, but with more engine noise and roughness. The 3.73 rear end on my F150 PowerBoost really helps with the towing effort.

Being a current owner of the 14" F150 in a super crew cabin and a 6ft bed, I do have the 5.0 liter option with the trailer/tow package, E-brakes in a 4x4. I too tow trailers up to 6,000 lbs +/- regularly but my thorn with the F150 is,... to get the higher towing capability in the same cabin configuration I really would have to go to a F250 which becomes a gas guzzler. I wish,if Ford is going to advertise towing "up too" that this marketing also includes F150 Super Crew with a long bed in 4x4 in 3:55 gears. On long road trips, the F150 drives so much more nicely than a F250 when both are unloaded. Super interested in this new Hybrid but I really gain nothing in towing like a 9000k trailer with better fuel economy.
@ALMX5DP

I'm not sure what your point is, you say you'd need to get an F-250 but then say that the F-150 is capable enough in the right trim. So are you just wanting Ford to advertise more openly? Disagree about the (non) engine braking statement. Just finished a 3,000 mile run towing a 6000# trailer, all of it around, up and over the Rockies. 6-7% grades were the norm, scales at trip's beginning showed total weight was 12,000#. I consistently found that using the cruise control to set a down-hill speed would, automatically, result in the truck gearing down to maintain the set speed. I never used manual downshifting. This gear-controlled engine braking never failed us, altho' we might be in 4th or 5th gear at times, based on speed set.

@AAutoBuyersGuide

Diesel contains 15% more energy per volume vs gasoline, this is the main reason diesel vehicles get 15-20% better economy (some comes from higher compression, etc). Ok your numbers are subjective to area and type of engine if you go by that logic. Some diesels are up 30% more efficient. In Texas diesel prices aren't that much different depending on time of year and other things. Dodge and Chevy diesels get 33MPG and the Maverick although in a different size category gets 37, are theses an A ++++ now? I guess my expectations for an A grade are different for sure. Thanks for your hard work and Alex, I enjoy your videos in my hunt for my next vehicle

I have 2022 F150 Powerboost with only 3900 miles, within one month engine overheated, onboard power not available, jerky or shudder transmission, sitting at dealer for one month, no available parts and Ford customer service is no help, don't buy this!

I question your comment on engine braking. If you place the control in low doesn't it provide enough regenerative braking to control speed and improve fuel economy at the same time?

No because the battery is very small. Once it is full, and it won't take long, the system provides no additional braking.

overpriced compared with its competition; the "skeptics" will pay for their rigidity and resistance. cybertruck kicks its ass.

1.5kwh of capacity? I am going to assume, you have a typo..... That is very, very little battery capacity.
