I think the sabre pilots were already wearing G-suits at that time, enabling them to pull harder and withstand more G's than the mig pilots. Am I wrong?
@ontoverse
3 жыл бұрын
Well, the MiG here was pulling 8-9 G's through most of the fight. With or without a 50's G-suit, I don't think many North Korean or even Soviet pilots could handle that. But yeah, the USAF had g-suits by then. I've found conflicting information regarding whether the Soviet ("honchos") pilots had them. They did have high-altitude suits (probably the VKK-1), but I'm not sure if they worked like g-suits as well. Generally a g-suit only increases tolerances by 1 g, though. 6 gs in a 50's plane is already pretty extreme -- but I doubt a real MiG-15 could handle a sustained 9G turn. Maybe I'm wrong on that though, maybe the NK and Soviet pilots where total badasses and held their planes together through the power of ideological purity....

In the circle fight @19:30 (ish) would you have been better served by going vertical to try and reset instead of bleeding all your energy in the turn. You weren't going to get lead on him, and his energy state didn't appear to bleed at all no matter the rate. I realize he had you right where he wanted, in his rear quadrant. Maybe, if you had broken it off a bit sooner, went vertical and used your roll rate to keep him on the lift vector. Sure, that would have likely put you into a vertical rolling scissors. But I can't help but think that changing the geometry of the fight after first realizing you couldn't match his turn would have, at a minimum, given him another equation to solve. Probably the only time I've seen you straight up out fought by a determined and relentless foe. Love your videos, so informative!

If memory serves, the F86 had hydraulically boosted wing surfaces and a movable tail or "flying tail". The Mig did not. What that meant that the F86 was much more controllable at high speeds (in fact could go trans-sonic in a dive). The Mig had better thrust (a little) and a better ceiling (a lot in the days of guns only). I sorta remember the early F86 had automatic slats - giving it a boost in turns as well. Get the MIG to follow you in a dive and then pull out when you want and have him play superman against the controls.

DPRK and PLAAF pilots also didn't have modern pressure suits which limited their ability to push the Mig15. NATO pilots did which gave them the edge, coupled with the fact that NATO pilots had much more training, and were often experienced pilots from WW2. North Korea and China didnt even have modern air forces and tried to build one on the fly. The Soviets even sent in experienced Russian pilots to try and even the odds a bit more. Of course, they couldn't tell anyone about this so they gave their pilots a handful of Korean phrases to use in the cockpit to make them look like North Korean flights. Of course once the pilots started cursing in the middle of dogfights it kinda gave the game away!

I believe that was a great advantage that it had, along with G suits, so the pilots could withstand more G's. For those who don't know, the Sabres had gyroscopic gunsights, allowing the gunsight to give an estimation of how much they should lead their nose, depending on the turn rate and range set on the gun sight.

Another big part of it is that you're not the one flying the plane and especially moving the camera -- it's really easy to lose your bearings if you're not the one in control. Maybe the major mistake in the tacview round is that you kept on trying to lead him to bring a gun solution. That way, you've never been in the control zone. Same when you both dropped altitude. You are well aware that you have the advantage at altitude but you descend with him anyway. Be patient, let him sacrifice altitude and keep potential gravity energy. Don't try to lead him at all costs. When he'll realize you did not take the bait he'll have either to pull up to you (and you'll be waiting for him with more energy) or he'll flatten his curves and you'd be able to have an opportunity to boom and zoom. Anyway, don't let him pull you down when you are in the middle of the circle. Extend your turn to be under his wing plan, not over, and wait for the solution. Get outside the turn. Remember that by being under his wing plan you are actually under him where he can't see you. The moment he'll put his wing flat to look for you he's dead.
@lemuelcasillas7572

Mig wins in the rate fight due to thrust to weight (far better in the mig), basically, in an equal energy low altitude situation with both pilots of equal skill, the mig will win 90 percent of the time, it has far better low speed acceleration and due to that, better sustained turn, the sabre has to maintain its energy and try to abuse its roll rate/high speed maneuverability that is far better than the migs, but the lower energy state the fight goes to, the bigger advantage the mig has.

F-86's and MiG's combined the best of two worlds, you have the bare bones, armed with nothing but guns and cannon dogfights where the victor all came down to which pilot honed their technique better and then there's the jet era where you fly at speeds no prop has ever flown before and never will. Several planes have come after these two beasts, with the same dogfighting doctrine, but this is the pinnacle and the peak of it all.

Is the F-86's lead computing gunsight not modeled? The F-86's reticle would light up when the target was in the firing solution. It took all the guess work out of deflection shooting. Also since it is a Russian dev team I am sure they didn't model the MIG-15 correctly. It had a stick and pully flight control system where the F-86 had a hydraulically assisted flight control system. The key to mastering the MIG-15 was to keep you speed as high as possible. The MIG pilots would have a hard time pulling tight turns at high speeds due to wind resistance. So at high speeds the MIG-15 could be easy to out rate.

Man, the F-86 is one of the all-time, best looking aircraft. It looks like it's hauling ass when it's sitting still. You have to respect the MIG-15, of course, but flying next to the Sabre, the MiG-15 always looked stumpy and sawed-off, reminiscent of a sow. The Soviets built some great aircraft, but they always looked brutish and utilitarian when compare to their American counterparts. Now they did seem to meet with some progress in the style department with the MiG-29 and SU-27, but unfortunately for them, they collapsed soon after. It's as if the Soviet philosophy stifled any creativity or appreciation for beauty.

On the slow motion cuts, it looked like the tracers were missing out in front while there were hits landing. Is this accurate physics that the tracers aren’t as dense as the rest of the load out?

Might be AP Bullets hitting the target or might be client side bullets not rendering/registering properly.

Tracers have a bit less drag than normal bullets, but I doubt that it has any meaningful effect.

So do the historic gyroscopic gunsights just not work? In gameplay I've seen of WWII birds and Sabres, the gyro gunsight seems to do nothing, even though the radar ranging gunsight was credited with massively increasing the effective accuracy of American pilots, along with the homogenous armament (whereas the Mig's mix of different cannon calibres led to issues shooting at other fighters... The MiG was designed entirely around killing the B-29, after all).

Question: It looked like you were trimming during the merge. While not a complete idiot I am an amateur fan of bfm at best, and I just realized I've never heard about what the SOP is regarding trim during a dogfight. I kinda ASSuMEd considering the rapid speed/altitude changes that pilots would cancel any trim inputs to have more 'direct control' of the aircraft if that makes any sense. Was that a false assumption? Do you retrim the airplane as the fight progresses to different altitudes/speeds?? Btw great channel, discovered your videos about 4 months ago and has been a pleasure going over your back catalogue and catching up to new videos. Keep up the good pard

How would the f-86 have faired against the me-262?

I think you cannot compare those two planes, just because the me262 was at least ten years earlier and many steps to the f-86 are missing. A Battle between the Ta183 would probably be a much fairer fight although it would be more unrealistic, because without the extensive amount of resarch and data provided by the Ta183 the f-86 would never came into existance in such a developed way or at least another 10 to 15 years later.

I saw a video on F-86 Fire Control System. The correct gunsight reticule should be able to compute the lead angle. Instead the video showed that the pilot chose to shoot ahead instead. Not correctly simulating the actual F-86 Fire Control System. It has a radar and able to adjust the gunsight reticule to fit the size of the enemy plane and adjust the lead angle. The pilot just need to put the reticule on the enemy plane to shoot.
