Asuka Village in Nara, with its tranquil rural scenery, is said to be the place where the first emperor ruled, and where the nation of Japan began. The Asuka River that flows through this area is a very small stream, but it often appears in poems written by Japanese people at the time. In addition, Asuka-dera Temple, located in the countryside, is said to be the oldest Buddhist temple in Japan, and the Great Buddha enshrined within it is also said to be the oldest in Japan.
