"It's a show about trying to mess up your kids a little less than your parents messed you up" Bill Burr actually says this exact thing in one of his netflix specials. He says it pretty much word for word. You can tell that Burr was incredibly hands on with this show, because his philosophy and his outlook on life just oozes out of it. It's one of the reasons I love it.

Johnny, my take on F is for family is that is is not supposed to be sending messages, but rather is sharing a perspective on family life in the generation that is mostly responsible for our own. As someone who had an older dad (born in 51 and I was born in 92) I recognize alot of the behavior In the show as familiar to my fathers from his early life in the 50s-80s

I believe Burr has said that this is definitely some reflection on his father and family in the 70s. It also hits the nail on the head with an Irish Catholic family. The fifth season really explored father/son and I feel like Burr had experienced something with his dad recently

One thing I do like about Frank is how much effort he puts into overcoming the biases he has, especially when it comes to his kids. Everything about his kids shows how they deviate from the stereotypes of their gender. -Kevin and Bill despite being boys are very sensitive and if anything, are the ones who need way more emotional support then their sister. -Maureen also has more stereotypically male interests than female interests. She loves computers, math, and gore, and she wanted to wear a male Halloween costume which aren't things that you'd associate with a typical 10 year old girl. She's also not as sensitive as her brothers, with season 5 being the only time we see her be sensitive. And while that doesn't seem bad for us, Frank is a guy who was raised with very sexist and toxic masculinity values. Plus this in the 70's, and yet he doesn't insist that Maureen take up more girly interests, and he's not like Joseph who shamed his daughter for wanting an education. He could've given Maureen shit for being gifted but he didn't. As for Kevin and Bill, even though he's not super understanding of them he does try, not once does he tell them that "men aren't allowed to be soft" and that conversation with Kevin where they talk about their feelings? That's pretty progressive on Frank's part. We also don't ever see Frank be that way with Sue either. His issue with her getting a job wasn't that he thinks women should only be at home, his issue with it was him projecting his own insecurities onto her. Also we never see or hear him judging Sue for having gone to college.

Nobody is talking about how important the end of Kevin’s story arc was. In a way it’s just the beginning. Him and Alice use one of the broken condoms. The scene right after where her father kicks him out, is very reminiscent of Sue’s father’s opinion of Frank. With the hint in there that she might get pregnant, the show ends with Frank’s cycle starting all over again, this time with Kevin at the front of it. There’s a reason they essentially made that the final scene of the show.

At first, I was like “how could they end the show like that? It has to continue!” But after thinking more about it, I realized that that was a very fitting ending to Frank’s arc and how his family is improving and we can assume that they all can grow to be better too

Oh dang I didn’t expect Johnny to be covering F is For Family, can’t wait to hear y’all talk about it on Cartoons that Curse! Also I love how season 5’s conflict with Frank trying to find meaning in life through his fathers last words, reminds me of Bojack Horseman episode, Free Churro and the ICU tangent he goes on during Bea’s Eulogy

What I liked about that final scene is that it showed that Frank had finally changed for good. Throughout the series, Frank would go trough phases were he was happy and doing better, but as soon as something bad happened, he would fly off the handle and go back to his old ways. This final scene shows that he's learned to stick with his changes, instead of going into a rage, he hangs up the phone and focuses on his family. I'm so glad we got to see this permanent change in Frank

Season 5 was unsatisfying because we only got 8 episodes. I would have loved to see Bill rekindle his relationship with Bridget. There is a lot of stories about the Murphy children I hope will be explored. Maybe if Netflix made a F is for family special set in the mid 80's we can see Kevin, Bill and Maureen as young adults. Great video by the way...

Thanks for talking about this show. I feel like it’s criminally unknown in the cartoon community. It helped me cope with my family since my dad is a lot like Frank and my mom is a lot like Sue (which makes sense cuz they grew up during those times). I would love to see a video about Sue, Rosie, and maybe Kevin? I don’t know if you could get a lot of material out of Kevin but he’s my favorite character :) OH! And maybe one on Nguyen Nguyen since I don’t see a lot of people talk about her Great show. I was worried about it being able to have a proper finale and I was glad it got to.

F is for Family is my favorite series of the Adult Netflix shows. It was a wholesome show with a family dynamic that was perfect. And for the first time in a long time, like King of the Hill before it, we got a father that wasn't stupid for jokes sake, Frank is a human being and like any human he isn't perfect. Hell look at Vick's story. That was some character development.

The characters felt real. Which out of any family show is actually rare. There wasn't drama for the sake of it. It was life crashing hard on the people in F is for Family which helps really drive. Of course the jokes and comedic timings help.

“Kevin gleans some great advice from this conversation (with his father) .... (Frank) realizes he can’t find meaning through his fathers experiences” I know it’s not exactly the same, but those two statements so close to each other seemed pretty funny to me

The theory of Kevin being Vick’s baby’s real father was the FIRST thing I thought when I saw Vick holding a baby. I don’t think it really is Kevin’s but it’s a fun theory!

It’s very hard for me to decide which season of F is for family is truly the best because for me all five seasons were really great. Truly this show is more of a satire on the American dream and basically how a little fucked up life was in the 1970s in a funny way. Frank Murphy is one of the most captivating and most relatable character in the entire show because I heard that some people say that every time they watch Frank they see their own fathers in Frank. And I will admit Frank in a way does also remind me of my father. And when you really look at all this shit that he has been through it’s fair to say that he has a lot of reasons to be angry mean can you blame the guy. I mean his hopes and dreams got shattered, his father was such an abusive asshole, his whole worldview was shattered as well, getting punished after saving the airline, he saved that fat fuck Bob Pogos job which appears to be nothing more than sitting on his fat ass eating all day, and Bob stood by and allowed it to happen. And then when all of a sudden Bob realized that he made a mistake letting Frank go then all of a sudden he begs him to come back after Rosie hooked Frank up with a job. His children are a bunch of ungrateful screw ups. All and all Frank could just not catch a damn break in the show so I mean he has every right to be angry. Basically angry about the fact that he really believed in the American dream and come to find out that it was all just a bullshit illusion.

I haven’t even watched the video yet and I’m so thankful for it. This show is so criminally underrated, and while it has its flaws it deserves so much more appreciation for its absolutely fantastic writing. In terms of realistically portrayed intergenerational trauma and family disfunction, I’d place it right around the likes of Bojack Horsemen, Moral Orel, and The Venture Bros.

The final scene was great, the finale itself left me hoping there’d be more. Probably cuss I didn’t look at the episode list ahead of time and still thought it was gonna be 10 episodes long like the last couple of seasons. Some aspects seemed a little rush. Like I think Sue’s brother both times was a little too quick to forgive her, and as u said, they did stuff with Maureen but her arc seemed incomplete. But as far as getting to that ending scene, I think all 5 seasons made it feel earned. I loved this show since season one and bummed to see it end. But I guess I rather see it end with me wanting more as opposed to it going on and on and me wanting it fo stop.

Before I watch the video, I wanted to say I'm glad someone made a video on the Finale I feel like I'm the only one who kept up with this show and it felt nice to watch all the way through I'll ALSO say that it felt a bit abrupt. Didn't really have that "finale" conclusion feeling that gives me the warm feeling. It was a nice end to a story arc, however. I was in the middle on it but it didn't do anything wrong, so I'm alright with it.

I started watching the show because im a big fan of Bill Burr, but ended up staying because i fell in love with all the characters. Yall must understand that Bill Murphy lived in a society and time that discouraged men from expressing their emotions or feelings. Hence the only emotion he felt he had was anger. Add childhood trauma, fighting in the Vietnam war, missed dreams and opportunities, and providing for a family of 4 kids, and we had a really emotionally conflicted man. Its great to see him lose all those baggage and realize that above all else, family matters 🤗🤗

This has been one of my favorite shows in a long time. I like that even though Sue and especially Frank, get so preoccupied or angry that it affects the kids, they still care about them and love them. Frank didn’t know how to handle each of his children, and at first discouraged their behavior. But as time went on he grew, and started accepting how they were. A lot of adult cartoons with a stubborn angry father take the route of having him be a complete asshole to his family for comedic purpose, (family guy, modern simpsons, American dad) but Frank has genuine love for his wife and children, even if he sometimes doesn’t know how to show it. When he fucks up he feels regret and does what he can to make it right. He realizes that he can’t let the way his father treated him growing up be how he treats his own family. He’s a man that isn’t the best at showing his emotions, but he tries to do better.

I was really sad that it ended. But I also kinda love that the whole thing is just a year in this family’s life, and a year in the 1970s as a whole. This show was hilarious but it also had a great coming of age vibe. I hope Bill gets to make more stuff like this.

Was anyone else kinda hoping for an small little epilogue scene showing bill older and having his life be similar to bill burr’s? I mean they share the same name, they’re both ginger, burr voices frank, and I remember hearing that the family in the show is based off burr’s own family so I thought it would’ve been a perfect choice to show bill all grown up like that.

looking at season 1 I see it as raw, It doesn't have as much spunk as the later seasons but it's a good way to convey just what exactly family life was back in the 70s. Dads were angry, housewives were underappreciated, these are things of the time and I believe that first seasons illustrates that beautifully in the first season.

This show does not get half of the attention that it deserves but I honestly think that is what made it so special. I love how it had moments that made me roll on the floor laughing but also some that made me shed a few tears. I also really think the 70s were an interesting decade and I loved seeing how they portrayed it. I really liked how they mirrored the first scene during the last moments and show not only how much Frank has changed as a character, but everyone else as well. I have a soft side for family sitcoms and this one just made my heart so full. I’m going to miss it so much.

My brother recommended this show to me- he was born in 1981, there’s a 16 year gap between us- he always told me how before I was born, our dad was a complete psycho, he worked as a manager for the engineering department at the local airlines, and that mom was nice but never there cause she was juggling being a housewife while completing her law degree, so my 3 siblings (twin brothers and a sister) had to basically raise themselves. Our dad was always stressed and screaming, they got hit often, but despite all that they managed to patch things up and stay close after I was born. So in this situation I’m Megan lol. This was the first show that actually captured real family dynamics, especially middle income ones- frank’s from the silent generation but the show portrays him as a boomer, and it was interesting to see his character growth throughout the years, shedding his ideals as well as trauma in order to raise his kids better and not pass on that generational trauma-same with the other characters as well, they all changed or matured in ways that made sense- Thought I’m a lil sad that this was the finale I’m glad that it ended like this, instead of dragging on. I kinda wish we could have some sort of special episode to see what happens when the kids grew up, cause it’s like the arc about Maureen being a mathematical genius was sorta forgotten, and Kevin grew up so much, from being stoned all the time to a responsible-ish teen- and bill went from a snot nosed crying kid to a bully that finally self reflects. Anyway loved the show, they did a great job on it.
