There were only so many choices when it came to TV when I was a kid, and F Troop appealed to the quick pace of childhood slapstick. It probably is dated now, but it probably was the last show of the "Cowboys and Injuns" era, and thus was fittingly self-consciously poking fun at itself. Thanks for the post.

Although only 2 seasons were produced, F Troop enjoyed a healthy life in syndication reruns. I seen this show in reruns on both Nickelodeon in the 1990s, rerunning from 1991 to 1992 on Saturday mornings, and on nick@nite from 1991 to 1995, despite an archive of 65 episodes. Reruns began airing on Me-TV on September 2, 2013.

One of the funniest TV shows from the 1960's, that could never be made today. It's basically just a rehash of "You'll Never Get Rich" that starred Phil Silvers as the conniving Sgt. Bilko. It was on the air for only two season due to Warner Brother's Studio not wanting to tie up so much of their western sets for just a half hour TV show and the added cost of filming in color was another reason. There was going to be a reunion movie in the 1980's but Forrest Tucker took sick and died before a story was even written.

I was in the army. I can remember when we were in formation, the commanding officer would make a stupid joke and everyone feigning laughter. I've been in companies where the first Sergeant ran the company because the Captain had no idea how to do it or was too lazy. About the only decision some COs could make was wether or not they should go to the bathroom. The first Sergeant would let him have all the credit for a top notch company. There was always some old guy who was in for 18 years or so, talking about how the army was years ago like Duffy does.
@kevinhealey6540
5 жыл бұрын
@USA#1 !! Well I'll tell you one thing. Officers are university educated. Most know what they're doing. The NCOs run the army, that is true, bu the officers control it. That has to be. It could not be the other way around. If that were the case, there would be all these wars all over the world. The show is funny, that's true and there are some things that do happen in the army. However, the character Sergeant O'Rourke is a disgrace to the army. He's not dedicated to the United States army. He's a scoundrel and a thief. Captain Parmenter received his commission on the basis of merit. It's a common with a major war for that. Parmenter is not an educated man and their is a difference between an educated officer and a non educated officer. Agarn is Totally controlled by O'Rourke. He has no idea what he's doing could land him in jail.
@roberthaworth8991

@@kevinhealey6540 The best historical example I can think of of an army being run by its NCOs alone was the rebel forces during the Indian Mutiny (1857). The rebels were usually quite superior in number to the British and their few Indian allies, but while they had adequate numbers of long-service NCOs they were generally very short on company- and field-grade officers. Senior commanders they had in plenty -- so many, in fact, as to cause confusion and rivalry -- but those men tended to be regional royalty, politicians, and the occasional holy man, all with little to no military experience. The rebel formations could thus keep themselves together and fed, but lacked both tactical and operational direction. There was a body, but no brain to the army. Without officers it possessed the sinews of war, but had no sense of purpose, and no plan nor flexibility. The rebels relied solely upon the selection of favorable defensive terrain, plus the huge, clumsy cannon they had taken from the arsenals to secure victory, but they were inevitably outflanked and routed due to the audacity of the fine cadre of officers the British possessed, who led from the front and whose spirit of class-contempt for the enemy (thus British invincibility) they inculcated in their men.

@@philippeh3904 The show would have done even better in syndication if they had produced more shows in colour. The introduction of colour was the make or break of a lot of shows and their success in initial screening and then syndication. You need only to look at how much air time all of the different visual media have to fill and some of the crap that is produced to see the problem.
