Friday afternoon marked the conclusion of a dedicated day of updates for the Scuderia Ferrari F1 team. Charles Leclerc, from Monaco, kicked off the morning session behind the wheel of the SF-24 single-seater, with Spaniard Carlos Sainz taking over post-lunch break. Across the home circuit in Fiorano, a total of 188 kilometers were covered, alongside promotional filming, all broadcasted to juxtapose on-track data regarding the new updates with information gleaned from simulation tools.
The initial phase of the test, led by former Alfa Romeo driver Leclerc, was structured into 8 stints, each adhering to a consistent pattern: an out lap, two rapid laps with a low engine map, and finally, an in lap featuring a practice start. Between these sets of 4 laps, Ferrari's mechanics fine-tuned the car to grasp its behavior at various ride heights. Notably, higher ride height stints alternated with lower ones, visually evident as the SF-24 EVO navigated Fiorano's surface, occasionally kissing the track with its floor, emitting smoke or sparks.
These sessions, ranging from 5 to 20 minutes, consistently utilized yellow-banded Pirelli tires. As previously underscored, the updates integrated into the SF-24 car omitted any modifications to the floor. Throughout the afternoon, the Ferrari's floor remained unaltered, curbing the excitement of avid fans perched atop the famous bridge overlooking Fiorano, eagerly awaiting any discernible modifications.
Leclerc's runs were not without their challenges, with the Monegasque driver grappling with slight oversteer in setups featuring lower ride heights. Conversely, the car displayed cleaner handling in the latter stints. This observation naturally prompts considerations based on visual cues.
By elevating pressure in the underfloor region, besides inducing an outwash effect, increased local load generates additional downward force, thereby shifting the center of pressure forward. With the installation of the comprehensive upgrade package, encompassing adjustments to Venturi channels, floor edges, and sharp angles, equilibrium restoration and oversteer minimization are anticipated.
In the final stint, Charles Leclerc unleashed the mobile wing on the main straight, deploying a more aggressive engine map to facilitate a precise push lap. Notably, car number 16 clocked a lap time in the low 58-second range, showcasing the culmination of the day's testing efforts.
