Ferrari ended the seventh weekend of the 2024 Formula 1 season with a podium finish. Charles Leclerc brought car number 16 home in third place. The upgraded SF-24 car showed significant improvement, staying competitive with the front runners, but like in Miami, it was not enough to contend for the win. Carlos Sainz finished in fifth place behind Oscar Piastri, losing the position during the pit stops as the team gambled on a Safety Car that never materialized.
McLaren continued to assert itself as the second strongest team, with Lando Norris delivering a highly competitive performance. Norris pushed hard throughout the race, holding off Leclerc's Ferrari and even challenging Max Verstappen in the closing stages. Verstappen secured another victory, extending his championship lead, but he no longer enjoys the comfortable margin he had last season. The battle for his fourth title appears to be a season-long struggle.
The first stint at Imola was particularly challenging for tire management. Telemetry data and lap times of the top 10 finishers indicate that the performance on Medium tires mirrored the overall race results after 63 laps. The focus was on the performances of McLaren and Ferrari. Verstappen, pushing his car to its limits, risked going off track, while the battle behind him was fierce.
Charles Leclerc's demeanor after the race reflected understandable disappointment. The new aerodynamic package brought to Imola had raised expectations, and there were moments during the race that suggested a higher podium finish might have been possible. However, a clear analysis reveals that Ferrari made a significant leap forward, often matching McLaren's pace and, aside from the first stint, rarely trailing Red Bull. The 7-second gap Leclerc faced at the finish was somewhat misleading, as Verstappen and Norris were pushing hard in the final laps, while Leclerc, having lost his chance at victory after an off-track excursion at Variante Gresini, focused on bringing the car home safely.
