What happened to Scuderia Ferrari in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix? The Maranello team struggled in the first sector of the Imola track, underperforming compared to rivals Red Bull and McLaren in both the qualifying session and the race. Initially, the issue appeared to stem from the preparation lap and warm-up strategy, but both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz pointed out that the difficulties might have arisen from an inadequate hybrid strategy in the section where maximum power is needed.
Ferrari's key challenge at Imola was its performance in the first part of the track. The SF-24 underperformed in qualifying, with a gap of 3-4 tenths compared to the main rivals, which was also evident in the race.
After Saturday's qualifying, Charles Leclerc highlighted that Ferrari was unsure about what they were missing in turns 2 and 3 or more generally in the first sector. Despite trying various approaches, the same issue persisted. Tire preparation was crucial, but there seemed to be something else at play, as the Monegasque driver explained.
Before the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, it was noted that the Imola track might not be ideal for showcasing Ferrari's new aerodynamic updates. However, after 63 laps, doubts arose about the setup, the inability to attack the curbs as aggressively as Max Verstappen and the McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and whether the SF-24 was using enough battery in the first sector.
Post-race, Charles Leclerc observed that Red Bull and McLaren seemed to employ a unique engine strategy, causing Ferrari to lose time on the straights. Despite this, Ferrari's cornering performance was on par with, if not better than, their rivals. Leclerc stressed the need to analyze this aspect further and expressed confidence that addressing it would make Ferrari more competitive. He also emphasized the importance of improving qualifying performance, noting that the issues they encountered had become quite clear to the team.
