This type of inverted grid sprint race is certainly more interesting because in some way it would allow to assign points even to drivers who usually struggle to be in the top 10. However I believe that in the rear no one would risk overtaking with the rule of parc fermé (same reason why even the current sprint race does not create all the spectacle that was expected). I am personally convinced that if the parc fermé rule between sprint race and Sunday race will be abolished, the riders would be willing to take higher risks. Then, if we want to make the sprint race more imaginative, we could do it with the grid reversed, and with the order of arrival of the top ten who can gain positions on the Sunday starting grid depending on how they qualified on Friday's session. For example: in this video Alonso started 11th (so probably he was 9th in Qualifying). At the end of the sprint race he finished 8th; being in the top ten he gained two positions (start counting from the 10th), so in Sunday's race he would start 7th Mick Schumacher instead started and finished 2nd so no positions gained (yes I know it is probably a bit complicated 🥴😅)

I would love Sprint Races with reverse grid. At least it would be something very different and entertaining. I know some drivers doesn't like this but maybe they will add this feature if the sprint doesn't affect the race grid. Race grid needs to be set by the real qualifying on Friday
@p_nilly
2 жыл бұрын
Exactly this. We'd get battles all race with the fast cars all having to pick off the "slow cars" while the laps tick away quickly. As the race goes on, the gap at the front would get bigger and bigger, we'd end up with some serious chasing after the field spreads out a bit
@bruhmoment2088
2 жыл бұрын
@@p_nilly but there's no incentive to fight. 3 points isn't worth racing too hard for, and there's no way cars starting at the back will be able to make their way into the top 3 in just a 25% race. And if you award more points for the sprint, then you're actually rewarding drivers for screwing up during qualifying because they'll start high up and have good chances for top 5 places. It wouldn't be fair to the midfield cars either, if you qualify tenth and just start tenth with only faster cars behind you then there's pretty much no chance of points, whereas starting pole or second from 19-20th in qualifying gives you a ~20 second advantage over the actually quick cars that are stuck behind the midfield.
@p_nilly
2 жыл бұрын
@@bruhmoment2088 If they had a sprint race (like in this video) where the grid is just the championship order reversed, then it makes more sense. Qualifying will still set the grid for the Sunday race, while the sprint on a Saturday would have points on offer for maybe the top 8? This removes the incentive to screw up in qualifying, as you won't get a better grid slot for the sprint anyway, while giving the drivers in the slowest cars a chance to score points. If the end result of the sprint didn't set the Sunday grid, there would be many more risks being taken as there would actually be something worth fighting for

This gave me an idea of how to do sprint weekends: Friday, you do qualifying as it is now, maybe give a point to fastest overall. For the sprint, it’s reverse grid from Friday ie Friday you’re fastest, you start last in the sprint. For the sprint, 5 points for first, 3 for second, and 1 for third, to give back marker teams a chance at some points. For the race Sunday, you ignore the sprint and use results from Friday so if you’re fifth Friday, you start fifth Sunday.
@bruhmoment2088
2 жыл бұрын
But then the top teams at the back just wouldn't race because they don't have a chance for points and don't want to wear out their engines. You also punish the worse teams that manage great qualifying sessions and the midfield teams that don't have the pace to overtake. With this idea, Latifi would probably score more points than Russel, and I don't think that's fair. The current format is honestly the best way to do sprints, where drivers need to decide whether to risk crashing or hold position. Any reverse grid shenanigans would backfire completely.
