We have consistently highlighted that the performance of the Ferrari SF-24 exceeds its demonstrated capabilities. This car marks Ferrari's inaugural venture into ground-effect aerodynamics, starting with a clean slate and adopting more efficient design principles under the current regulations. The primary goal for the 2024 Formula 1 season remains unchanged: to exert maximum pressure on the formidable reigning champions, Red Bull. This team has successfully mastered the core principles of the regulations that have governed the dynamics of wing cars since 2022.
The Prancing Horse claimed a triumphant victory at the Albert Park circuit in Australia, seizing the opportunity presented by Max Verstappen’s rare technical mishap, which forced him to retire on lap 4 due to rear brake issues. Aside from this, the performance of the two Italian cars varied, sometimes excelling, sometimes struggling, with generally good outcomes but inconsistent results related to tire performance. Challenges included activating the compounds across different racing conditions, such as during a single qualifying lap or maintaining race pace with a heavy fuel load.
These variations stem from a fundamental characteristic of the red car: it transfers a relatively low amount of energy to the tires. Although this trait helps manage tire degradation, it prevents the tires from heating up effectively, keeping them within the optimal working range and thus limiting grip, which leads to suboptimal performance and times that fall short of theoretical potentials. Consequently, the car cannot be pushed to its limits.
Scuderia Ferrari has been diligently addressing these issues ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. Efforts have been made to better manage the transition between Soft and Hard tires, a significant challenge in the early stages of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Technical adjustments at the suspension level were explored to develop new setups. These minor adjustments, which focus on tire performance, are made without disrupting the aerodynamic stability of the car. This approach is bolstered by simulation studies based on the mathematical models of the tire compounds, preparing the team to implement new warm-up strategies during the sole free practice session of the weekend to ensure the tires receive the proper amount of energy.
