Yeah that originally kinda turned me off, didn't want to harm the poor truck. Yet the truck doesn't get as butchered as one might think, the bed gets cut out (it was bad and getting replaced anyway) and a little bit of the interior steps (both rusty on this truck) and that's it. They re-pop those interior steps as well, so if I ever want to go back to original it won't be a big deal.

Oh my apologies, I thought you weren't too keen on the swap. To be honest I really wasn't into it at first, thought I'd be ruining that cool old truck, but my neighbor who is an old hot rodder from the late 50's and 60's said "That's what we did with our 30's Ford coupes! Put what was then modern running gear into them, go for it, it's still hot rodding." That struck me, and pushed me over the edge to go for it! It's an exciting project for sure! Thanks for watching!

Howdy, well into my CV to 64 F100 swap. Question, did you look for headers? When i've searched for CV Headers they are SUPER expensive, $900.00+ bucks. If I look for 4.6L headers, they are cheap depending on steel vs Stainless steel. Wondering about fitment, wasn't sure if you had even thought about headers?

Any preference on what year Crown Vic to use?
@syngensmyth4587
6 жыл бұрын
I have wondered why American cars (sedans) like the Crown Vic had a full chassis whereas most cars from Australia Europe etc had monocoque bodies was because of the the salted roads in the USA, so that if the body rotted out the chassis held things together until trade in time at least, is that the case?"
@rivercity3908
6 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought. But in reality there are only a handful of states that use salt/brine on the roads. This area is called the “rust belt” and makes up just a small portion of the U.S. and if you wash your car a few times over the winter or get a undercoating you can avoid the rust all together. I think the vic having a body on frame design came from what it was built to do. Be tough as nails and easily repairable. Two things the Vic is known for. As cop cars and taxis Vic’s live a rough life, and with a body on frame design they tend to be tougher, and you can put them on a frame puller if the damage is bad enough then they’re good as new. Sadly the Vic was the last of the body on frame car for us here in the U.S. and it is missed.

My big concern is that the Crown Vic frame won't be nearly as strong for heavy loads and towing.
@edcorbette4284
6 жыл бұрын
Br!an Delta V actually it probably is crown vic has full box where truck has c channel
@smh9902
6 жыл бұрын
Whether its a full box or a C-Channel isn't particularly important. Whats important is how large the web of the C-channel, how large its legs are, and how thick the C-Channel is VS how thick and wide the box frame is. A C-Channel frame thats twice as thick as a full box frame will have the same weight and roughly the same strength HOWEVER the C-Channel frame will not rust from the inside out especially if you coat it in something like chassis saver and will be easier to add lines and other attachments to. In terms of _size_ a box frame will be stronger, but in terms of _weight_ they are comparable. You can greatly increase the strength of a C-Channel frame by welding another piece of C-Chanel or angle iron along the top of the frame. I'll admit that older trucks, for their great simplicity and reliable design do sport overall smaller frames and axles for the same class of vehicle. My 1966 F350 1 ton is comparable to a modern 3/4 ton pickup. However the reason they could get away with this way back in the day is because the federal speed limit was 55 MPH and people didn't accelerate quite as fast. Its the acceleration and deceleration that causes the most stress, wear, and tear on the ring gear, axle, and frame. My truck from the factory only produced 186 horsepower with its 300i6 engine, BUT it would still tow just as much and haul almost as much as the newer trucks with their larger frames and axles because it accelerates much more slowly and has a much lower geared transmission and differential. And its not a matter of traction or how much these vehicles can pull. Like I said my truck will pull damned near as much as a new truck despite having a smaller drive shaft and axle. What snaps driveshafts and breaks ring gears is fast acceleration while towing a heavy load. fundamentally, look at most big rigs, commercial dump trucks, and large military trucks like the M35 and M813. Most use a C-Channel frame for simplicity, ease of bolting and attaching hardware, and corrosion resistance. Corrosion is a big deal, box frames trap water and cause them to rot from the inside out and there's nothing you can do about it because its inaccessible. Another point to be made is that older C-Channel frames have their suspension components riveted/bolted onto the frame. This is a major advantage over welding because over time the welds will form stress cracks and eventually fail whereas the rivets allow the frame to flex without the stress cracks that welds suffer from over time. This is coming from a man who welds a lot for a living and likes to reach for a welder to solve a lot of problems.

@rivercity3908

It can be, it's all in how you plan to use the truck I suppose. I'm a subscriber to your channel and have been watching your build, excited to see how you go about it. For me I wanted to use the panther frame, it's a great setup on the '08 P71, Watts link rear end, posi, cop gearing, wider track, 4 things I'd loose if I used my frame and say a explorer rear end. On top of that I'd have to C-notch, run new fuel and brake lines, find a tank, get a cutom drive shaft made, all of that adds up to more than what I paid for the vic itself. The vic and short box uni have almost the exact same wheelbase down to a half inch, a stellar rear end setup (better and more cost effective than a Explorer rear end). It also allows me to run it low without a c-notch and a overhaul of the rear suspension. If you sit down and run the numbers this just makes sense for what I want and a cost effective way to get there. If it's not your cup of tea then right on, that's what makes rodding so much fun, seeing all the different ways folks go about building a car or truck that fits them. Excited to see how yours comes along, that air cooled diesel the previous owner had in there blew me away.

There’s a way to bypass it. If I recall, you’d have to send out your ECU to get it removed, (I could be wrong on that) but if so I wonder if you could just replace a passenger Vic ECU with a P71 ECU and it not be an issue. Might be worth looking into.

What crown Vic years are best to use for a 69 f100?
@rivercity3908
5 жыл бұрын
2003 to 2011 gets you rack and pinion steering. It’s the era most prefer. The 1998-2002 has a narrower track width so you get better wheel options. In reality 1998-2011 you really can’t go wrong. It’s just a question of if you’d like a narrower track width or rack and pinion. A side note would be that 2005 and up have the CanBus system that will allow you to run plug and play OBDII gauges if you are interested in going for plug in aftermarket gauges.

You know...I didn't think about that until you mentioned it, yeah gross. Yet I only touched that one, the Shop Vac got the rest. So here's to hoping no communicable diseases changed hands. Yeah I've been researching the vic swaps from others, but none of them seem to really go into detail on the wiring, so I'm going to try and fill that void a bit. Haha smh? I looked into that route, I’d have to make custom brake lines, run fuel lines, box the front of the frame, fab custom trans mount, get a custom driveshaft made, source a Explorer rear diff, fab the new mounts for that, and most importantly I’d loose the 4-Link with Watt’s link out back. In reality a frame swap is about the same amount of work, more cost effective and you gain a 4-Link/Watt’s link rear end. It was a no brainer for me.

Let me 1st say I haven't watched all your videos from beginning to the end. I love your work Ok here goes I have a 52 Ford I want a v8 did any Crown Vics come with 5.0 or 5.4, or were they all 4.6. I also watched a video were they used a 99 explorer and a 2000 mercury mountaineer both those had 5.0 in them. Either way I go there's gonna be work. When I first saw all this stuff my mind started boiling so I came up with this I'm gonna take my 1952 Ford Truck sit it on either a crown vic/ explorer/ mountaineer mount my body except for front clip Oh I was thinking I found a 99 Navigator with the 5.4 Triton whole truck $700.00 mount 5.4 engine and transmission into the frame I decide to use, then I'm thinking 98- 07 Mustang rear-end will probably make it fast. My trade is Diesel Mechanic Journeyman Welder and I went to school a little bit for autobody. My question is there specs that you go by or have you spent alot of time in junkyards, thanks for reading this I've never posted a video but there is a 1st.time. Thanks.
