This time I'll try to accomplish two things at once - Within the series "Fantastic Beasts and How to Draw Them",' I'll be drawing a basilisk and at the same time test the matte pencils from Faber-Castell - Pitt Graphite Matt.
I launched the channel just this month, so it's clear that nobody is paying me for advertising - it's simply a small review from a regular artist.
Are they really matte?
Based on the test results, I can say that yes, the usual shine of graphite in this series of pencils has been significantly reduced.
It hasn't disappeared 100%, but the effect is quite noticeable.
(Except for perhaps the single pencil, 14B - it's practically as glossy as the regular graphite pencils).
So, there's no need to buy the set of 11 items that includes this 14B; instead, you could purchase a compact box with 6 pencils ranging from 2B to 12B in softness.
To demonstrate the behavior of these pencils in practice, I decided to forgo blending and smudging, creating the drawing solely using classical academic hatching.
However, I separately tested blending, and everything is fine in that regard as well. With a careful enough approach, it's possible to achieve completely smooth transitions
For mid-tones, I used pencils with softness ranging from 4B to 6B, and for darker and black areas - correspondingly, 8B to 12B.
To be honest, the difference between 8B and 12B isn't very significant, and with proper tonal drawing, you can manage with just a couple - 2B for lighter tones, one from the range of 4B to 6B for mid-tones, and any from the final trio for shadows.
It's important to note that the softer the pencil, the more noticeable the graphite shine becomes.
Overall, the test showed that this model is definitely usable - it's a genuinely high-quality product from a renowned brand at a reasonable price.
If you don't want to overpay, go for the compact set of 6 items. Compared to the larger box, it lacks one pencil, 14B, a basic sharpener, eraser, and a blending stump.
