This franchise has once again just recently come back into my life. If anyone is dying for a new-ish Fable experience but can't wait to find out how the reboot turns out, I would recommend taking a detaour through a mod called Aeon Edition for Fable TLC. I think it needs to be the steam version you buy, which you still can despite Anniversary also being on there. Aeon Edition is basically the same game but it mixes up balance, exploration and rewards in lots and lots of surprising ways.

Fable 3 is a really important game for me, it was my first experience with "story based rpg" games, leading me down a path of now loving all kinds of RPG and cRPG games. Sure, looking back on it with hindsight of the previous installations in the series it has its flaws, but it still holds a place in my heart as one of the games that got me into gaming in general.

i liked the idea with the two gloves and comboing the magic and found the idea used again in some battle royal game not long ago called spellbreak which sadly kinda died out, not to mention i'm not that big into PvP nowdays. Was still pretty fun for the short while i played it as you had quite a lot of different combos as you started with 1 elemental glove of choice that came with a set of spells and could pick up the other elements during a match and combo (or combo with other players) to set a wind spell tornado on fire or turn a firewall into toxic devilish fire with acid and so on.

The one thing I am most interested in with the reboot is what a Fable game will look like without Peter Molyneux over promising and vastly under delivering. I honestly think that Fable 3 suffered from the success of Fable 2. There was a two year game between the two games, where Fable 1 and Fable 2 had a four year gap between releases. I do love that they got John Cleese for your butler.

I was very disappointed when they didn't bring the RPG Mechanic's of the Fable 1 and just made the game more into the Kingdom Building Sim Game. Meanwhile the Story on 2 and 3 became less meaningful specially when trying to make a different playthrough (e.g Evil). The Final Bossfights are so lackluster unlike the Fable 1 where you fight the freaking Legend named Jack of Blades! His presence alone makes you think he's the Baddest of the Bad and he is, while giving you a Proper Bossfight unlike the Sequel Games. 😞

Love this retrspective series since I never played Fable (not having an X-Box) but still being curious about these games, since they were blockbuster sellers as I understand. Plus with new Fable on the way, it's neat to see what the original games were like. Incidentally, the story of Fable 3 seems to me like the basic plot of Mistborn which released a few years before Fable 3. I wonder if it's just a coincidence though.

Its weird, like in your fable 2 video, there are alot of systems that the game was trying to do in its narrative that I appreciated heavy. Fable 3 felt alot more *serious* and when I was younger playing the game, I did buy property but being young I didn't really have a good idea of balancing the budget. So for me it was a hard system to master while essentially on a timer. Not only that, there are alot of things enviornment wise that I thought about maybe too much. Like I remember in fable 3 where you had to choose between building an orphonage or a whorehouse w/ reaver? Because I didn't immediatly understand realestate I will always remember that decision (though it could have been a school) well you can walk those streets and kind of see the consequence of your actions. That was a thing in the game that kind of carried for me. LIke fable 2 when the sister was killed immediatly and the dog died I was locked in cause I took that personally. I know its a goofy setting but I kind of look at this like the direction of saints row but in reverse in a way. Saints row from a gameplay perspective had some of the same gameplay as GTA but on a bit of a goofier more customizeable side. However, the story aespects of that type of street culture was weaved in that made me respect it beucase it was paying homage to that life and the goods and bads that came with it. When 3 came out though, it was leaning more towards that silly/goofier side and I wasn't really with it. Also from a mechanics standpoint they put the customization on 10 which was great so you see how they leaned into that aspect (and it was one of the biggest reasons why people played the game) I and others were in the minority. There were alot of serious things the game touched on but that direction changed with 3 and 4, and they leaned more into the gameplay / fun aspects that made the game sell better. Like Johnny Gat's girlfriend dieing felt something because you saw in cutscenes and gameplay how much he cared for aisha. No hate in that, but its kind of the situation I find myself in looking at why I enjoyed fable. At the time atleast, the real estate option was cool because I really felt like I was *helping* everyone. Fable itself to me does a good job at having the civiliians express themselves. One of the features in fable I wish I saw in other games was the ability to actually hold people and interact with them. I LOVED actually being able to dance and play games with my kids ingame, and it was tied to something you could feel (vibration on the controller) Its a small thing, but it helped in regards to just going into town and having fun, or holding their hand. There is a part where your trying to guide walter who is blind and you have to guide him through the desert, That *feeling* really hit cause walter was that dude ingame. But actually trying to guide him physically while it may have been rough it gave me a feeling of appreciation for that old/young relationship especially when its someone you looked up too back in the day. I think the other game that did that in a way was the prince of persia game on the 360. I liked the platforming elements but it was cool that the other character would save you but I digress. Really, fable 3 felt like an actual *game* of old to me. No optimisation of gear, just kind of investing yourself in a world through silly antics that lowkey don't make much sense. I also think compared to other games, while I agree the choices ultimatley didn't matter especially when it came down to the kingdom part, the actions did come back if you interacted with the civillians cause they love to remind you what you did or did not do. Its not like, people from megaton coming back to kill you after you nuked it, or seeing moira brown as a ghoul but its something to say the least. It for sure had flaws, but I see what they were doing. It makes me thing now they may lean more into that silly aspect of fable that I'm not super into, but I understand why they would.

While this game had many flaws, it still was no where my least favorite as it was far better than fable 1 and had it's pros/cons v fable 2. It also was one of the last big game from a dreamer of a dev, Peter Molyneux, who had the lead on the fable series as a whole, not to mention gems like dungeon keeper and other absolute classics. He was widely criticized on release of the game for reaching for the stars far too much. I would suggest that if you have to be criticized for something as a game designer, that's got to be the best possible thing. On release, the game played well and had the best graphics and polish in the entire series (on the xbox 360). However, as stated in the video, those aged horribly, but that is an entirely separate issue. While the game did lose many of the last bits of RPG character creation, it did add a ton of very creative interactive menu design, simulation features, and world building pieces. The previous fable games certainly had some aspects over this game, but this game overall was the most overall polished. The majority of the RPG and story issues Mortismal points out could be fixed by simply putting a in game clock on your progression. This counts for combat, character progression, kingdom progression, even the housing market cheese you could pull off after enough time invested. The only sensible reason that the clock was not put in was because the devs believed many would hate the clock, and for whatever reason, a difficulty option to enable such a feature was also not added. So ya, the devs missed the mark here, but even still, this game pushed the boundaries in enough ways that it likely inspired the game industry in many ways, both for it's successes and failures. For that reason, I still have to give it my respect despite having my own critiques of the game. If the game had aged more gracefully or if you really don't mind the graphics, I would still recommend it to someone today.

Thanks for the video. I'm definitely less optimistic about the remake. If they actually put the time and energy into the remake, then it probably will be medieval-like, dark fantasy open world where "choices matter" with a refined combat system. That sounds like it's just going to be more of The Witcher 3, but done worse. Who knows. Maybe what The Witcher 3 really needed was a broken property management system. Onward to 400k. All I remember from Fable 3 is that I loved the desert part. And some quests and demond doors were cool. Other than that it's pretty forgettable. Also, I never really like it when my fantasy gets industrial revolution, removes a bit of that magic and moves it further into steampunk territory, which I don't mind per se but Fable for me was always fantasy first.
