I went for my student visa interview way back in 1983! We too had similar stories from back then, although no KZitem to share them. It seems there is always one officer in every consulate who just rejects everyone. Back in my days, there was a black lady officer in Mumbai who I was told rejected every application. Then, a few days before my interview someone told me that she got transferred to Chennai - which made me happy. Anyway, the officer who conducted my interview in Mumbai did not ask me a single question; she was busy combing her hair and handed me the white slip and mumbled something like "pick it up at 4 pm". I wasn't sure what it meant, so I asked her to explain which she did with a smirk. Over the years, I found out that many of my friends who applied for a student visa in Mumbai were approved by her. God bless her.

I don’t think there is any pattern that can be tied to a specific US consular officer, who approves or who rejects visa . There are lot of background checks that happens behind the scenes. They may not publish specific reasons of why they rejected any specific case. Each visa applicant’s case is unique. Addressing the officer with respect and being prepared to answer specific questions confidently helps. Besides, one needs to have a sound financial funding from the country of origin and strong ties back to your country will help the case as F1 is considered a non-immigrant visa. My 2 cents. - former F1 student, B1 visa and H1B visa holder and now an US citizen.

It's like people are dismissed without much consideration. Sometimes someone will just be asked; what's your name? When were you born? Visa denied! Surely what is that? Africa bears the brunt of consular officers who already have a mindset against us. I got my visa on the third trial. I tried the third time after 15 years. Applying for a visa in my country becomes a full-time occupation because of the hurdles we have to jump.

@@chaiandcoaching it is utterly heartbreaking for many. It's not easy for a regular African to afford USD 160 for the visa and so when they're barely given a fair hearing, it's really devastating. People literally pass out at the embassy because of the fear of being subjected to indignity by the visa officers. I work with a travel agency and obviously we handle visa applications. Daily I get to see seriously discouraged people. Yet for Americans it's so easy to go anywhere they wish. It's quite unfair

There used to be a Chinese professor at my University he like to fail many graduate students. So getting F in Graduate School means you are out of program. While preparing for my PHd written test , I went to him to ask one question. I had worked out the problem but wanted to verify the answer. Well I saw him struggling in solving the problem. Gosh if I was faculty in that having done so many times I could have easily done it. Yes he did solve it in front of me . So during my Phd written exam he set up questions. I had got 89 out of 100. He said I barely passed the Phd program because of 89. I told him I could have solved everything but due to lack of time I laid out steps how to do it in one problem. This professor never gave an A from what I hear from other graduate students. I probably scored highest or second among all his students. Since then I am disgusted with the education system. No other professors treated me well. But School is memorize and then put on paper The educational system is a joke. Einstein probably would laughing at it.

My only thought process in all these is how will they vet the teachers/professors so that they don't do racial profiling on students ? USA is totally a different system, how do we know if they are neutral or partial? The way the marks of each students are held close to the heart and also students don't meet each other again in next semester all make up for tough evaluation on professors. This is just a thought process to safeguard a student's career.

There are a lot of factors that are taken into consideration to grant visa and ofcourse officers mood is also a major factor.
