I noticed nostoc on the edges of my lawn and wanted to know more. It’s much more fascinating than I thought it would be. 😮

Did you then use your nostoc in suspension water as fertilizer? I was hoping you'd go into that for the N-fixing capacities. Possibly it would be good as a plant drench, overall. Thanks!

We cultured Nostoc for fun. But nitrogen-fixating algae can be used as natural fertilizer. I think the biggest benefits would be probably water retention and keeping soil particles together thereby decreasing the erosion and providing organic matter for other organisms. Inoculating soils with algae is a spreading practice and there are plenty of industrial "off-the-shelf" solutions for this. See more here: www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fenvs.2018.00049/full

Great video, thanks for the info. Do you have any tips for growing it on substrate?

Hi, the most important is to keep it moist. We spayed colonies once a day and kept them in closed space to prevent evaporation. Substrate does not really matter (plastic or rocks are just fine). Nostoc can fix nitrogen and prefers barren places where there is no competition with green algae.

There a lot of these things around my house. Can it be eaten?

If it's truly Nostoc, it should be edible. But I would not try. It may contain other organisms.
