Hedgehogs are charming little mammals that belong to the family Erinaceidae, and they have captivated the hearts of many with their unique appearance and endearing behaviors. Known for their distinctive spiny coats, these nocturnal creatures are found across Europe, Asia, and Africa, with different species adapted to a variety of habitats. The most commonly known species is the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), but there are several others, including the African pygmy hedgehog, which has gained popularity as a pet.
Hedgehogs are easily recognizable by their spiky exterior, which is made up of stiff, sharp quills. These quills serve as a primary defense mechanism against predators. When threatened, hedgehogs will curl into a tight ball, with their spines pointing outward, creating a nearly impenetrable barrier. An adult hedgehog can have around 5,000 to 7,000 quills, which can grow up to 3 centimeters long. Beneath their spines, hedgehogs have soft, furry bodies, and their faces are characterized by small, bright eyes and a pointed snout.
Despite their spiny protection, hedgehogs are surprisingly agile. They can run at speeds of up to 3 miles per hour, which may not seem fast, but it is quite effective for navigating through their natural environments. Hedgehogs also possess a keen sense of smell and hearing, which they use to locate food in the wild.
