Chapter 9: The Path to the Tower
The knight stood on the crumbling balcony of the ruined building, scanning the horizon for the tower. His eyes fixed on the tallest spire piercing the dark, cloud-streaked sky in the distance. The tower stood above all others, breaking through the heavy clouds like a beacon, its silhouette stark against the grim skyline. That must be the one, he thought. The path to it, however, was anything but straightforward. A graveyard stretched out before him, sprawling and desolate, the tombstones jagged like broken teeth. Beyond the graveyard lay winding streets, twisting and narrow, with shadows that flickered unnervingly in the dim light.
His grip tightened on the hilt of his newly acquired Sword of Smite Undead. The knight knew the way would not be easy, but he had little choice. The skeleton had spoken of the tower holding wisdom, and he could not turn back now. The desolate city was full of mysteries, and this tower might provide the answers he sought.
As he descended from the ruined building and moved through the graveyard, the wind picked up, carrying with it the scent of decay. The gravestones were weathered, their inscriptions long eroded by time. Some stood askew, barely clinging to the earth, while others had toppled entirely, sinking into the soft, damp ground. The knight stepped carefully, mindful of the treacherous footing.
It wasn’t long before the sound of brittle bones clattering reached his ears.
From behind a crumbling mausoleum, a skeleton emerged, its empty eye sockets glowing with a faint, eerie light. The knight unsheathed his glowing sword, feeling the pulse of divine energy flowing through the blade. The skeleton lurched toward him, raising a rusted, broken sword in a mindless charge.
The knight met the attack head-on. His sword, blessed with the power to smite the undead, sliced cleanly through the skeleton’s brittle bones. The creature crumbled before him, the force of the strike reducing it to a pile of shattered remains. His sword glowed brighter as if fed by the destruction of the undead.
The knight took a step back, surveying the remains of his fallen foe. The battle had been swift, the skeleton’s brittle bones no match for the enchanted blade. He felt a surge of strength as his body responded to the combat.

He sheathed his sword, feeling the power surging through him, and began to move forward again, deeper into the graveyard. But before he could fully compose himself, the distant howling began.
It was a mournful, chilling sound that sent shivers down his spine. The knight froze, straining his ears, and heard it again-closer this time. The howls echoed through the empty streets ahead, bouncing off the cracked stone walls and desolate buildings. His pulse quickened.
Undead beasts.
The knight tightened his grip on his sword and scanned the graveyard, realizing that the challenge ahead would be even greater. Whatever lay in wait, it was hunting him now. He took a deep breath, steeling himself, and pressed forward along the winding streets, his eyes fixed on the towering spire in the distance.
It was clear now-the fight for survival had only just begun.
