Long story short, I hooked up my grandfathers air compressor from his shop, and... NOT GOOD. Tank was leaking water from what I thought was the drain, so I bought an automatic drain setup and the leak found a new way out. THROUGH THE TANK ITSELF. Tank rusted through, lack of maintenance caused this failure. Glad that it failed the way that it did. It was ready to rupture, I found cracks on the outside and inside of the tank showing it was ready to rupture.
Ever heard someone talk about an air compressor that ruptured in their presence? Neither have I. Close call, for sure. Amazing that I can sit here and share this video with everyone. Absolute insanity - Seconds away from certain death.
Just make sure you drain your air compressor. Pressure vessels aren't to be taken lightly.
When the tank failed I was about 50 feet away and heard the air start releasing. I thought it was the drain hose that ruptured, so I ran into the garage and hit the breaker for the pump to stop building air and reassess. Once the pump stopped I went to the tank (approx 100psi at this point) and shut the drain valve.... didn't change the air leak, and as I was removing my hand I felt the stream of air coming from the tank.
I ran out of the garage and assessed the situation - having a 100psi BOMB in my garage, and risking the destruction of my new garage and the back windows of my house, I ran back in with a zip tied blow gun and chucked it up to the compressor to help bleed the tank down.
Once the tank was below 20psi I reapprocached and assessed the situation, with a camera in hand. Rest is on the video.
