I agree about Bret Hart. His run in WCW was awful. They didnt know what to do with him. Bret is one of the top 5 in all of professional wrestling. He was technically sound, unmatched stamina and a ring general. He was the consummate professional and held the title with pride and legitimacy. Bret during his WWF days was on top and when you watched his matches you knew you were getting your moneys worth. All that being said WCW messed up his career. They did more damage to his character than Vince Mcmahon could ever do. Bret will always be my favorite wrestler. A true legend.

Bret didn't do himself any favors. His immediate appearance in WCW was not well received by fans. He barely got booed or cheered one way or the other --- WCW fans didn't much care about him, and that included his initial appearance. It didn't help that Bret also had a very poor attitude at the time, which he's maintained throughout the decades, growing ever more bitter from one year to the next. His main problem as a performer is that he was not an adaptable personality. That's the real reason for his downfall, and why Vince threw him to the way side, and why he couldn't hack it in WCW. The truth is that Bret was an old school wrestling personality: fantastic in-ring wrestler with limited mic skills and a rather static personality. Even when WWF turned him heel, Bret was highly resistant to the idea. He wouldn't fully embrace the heel turn (because in his head he was always the good guy) which cultivated the whole "I'm a face in Canada but a heel in America" angle that limped on into nothingness. Bret was at his best when he went full-on asshole heel--something he would not do for personal reasons (arrogance, really). Furthermore, while DX were bending the rules and changing the game across the WWF landscape, Bret remained static and did what he did best: be boring old Bret Hart. And the Hart Foundation as a result looked like a bunch of stick in the mud buffoons any time they engaged in a mic-spat with DX. Shawn and HHH constantly made Bret look like a chump. They did this intentionally. And Bret wasn't agile and/or witty enough to react to their constant (albeit immature and intolerable) beratements and shenanigans. The crowd, meanwhile, smelled what DX was cooking, which further empowered them at the cost of belittling Bret Hart and his associates. Times were changing.... Bret screwed Bret. He was his own worst enemy. He was an old soul caught in the crossfire of a rapidly changing landscape that he couldn't keep up with. Nor did he make even the slightest attempt to to. Had he entered WCW with a positive mindset, had he made the attempt to change his personality and look (ditch the faded blue jeans, the Canadian hockey jerseys, adapt to the WCW landscape, play the political game a bit) then perhaps he would have had more of an impact in his WCW arrival. But he did none of those things. He didn't even try. He came in being the same old Bret Hart that everyone had grown tired of by 1998. Bischoff and Hogan were far from being stupid. They knew what sold. Bret didn't sell. That's what Vince realized by 1997, and that's why Vince sided with the other guy. Bischoff and Hogan realized that quickly, too. For others, it took years to come to that realization. There's still some people out there who haven't haven't yet awakened to that reality. While Bret is perhaps the best technical professional wrestler to do the damn thing, which includes some of the best in-ring storytelling and move executions imaginable, his strength and skillset were only one side of the 2000-era wrestling coin. The other side, which demanded wrestlers to constantly shift and expand their personality, become more charismatic as a performer, and to embrace the ever-changing modern culture as it impacted wrestling ... those stood opposite to Bret's strengths. That was just not who he was as a person. Not all of us are that way. Most in fact aren't. And that's what truly led to his downfall in wrestling. Unfortunate events like his brother's death as well as the other issues with dwindling members of his family sure didn't help his mentality at the time, either. But even today you see Bret for who he always was: an unadaptable personality, unyielding in his single-mindedness, and ever-so-bitter. Hell, the guy can't let the Goldberg thing go some 30 years later. Any time he gets a chance, "Goldberg is the most unprofessional-----" Yeah, Bret. We heard you. We get it. We've got it since 2000. It's time to move on... But to my overall point: Bret could never move on. It's not who he is as a personality. And that's why he failed after 1997.
@theoverunderthinker
Жыл бұрын
@@SlickMajestic his downfall was caused by the fact that he was an uncomplicated guy in a field where most people were "plans within plans" types. Loyal to money and not much else. he has a right to be bitter, it's just that being bitter is never the best thing for you. I am sure the complication of the concussions don't help him mood or willingness to forgive. it would be better for him if he could, but there it is. I think a lot of your analysis is correct about him being the same year after year and that it was limiting him. but he was still a big draw for a long time and even when he was, they did not always treat him fairly.
@SlickMajestic
Жыл бұрын
@@theoverunderthinker I agree. I believe Bret's time had come and gone, and Bret didn't do himself any favors once he "left" the WWF. Like you said, he was an uncomplicated guy in an era that became very complicated and also very political. In that environment, at that time, one had to play the politics game to prosper. The Game was the The Game for a reason. Hell, the dude married into the politics... :D End of the day, Bret simply wished to be an old school wrestler,, which is how he was raised and what he was best at. Unfortunately for Bret, straight wrestling was the last thing fans or creative cared about from 1997-2004 and even beyond. :D I like what you said: he had every right to be bitter (he did!) but being bitter often works against someone. It definitely did here. And his enthusiasm for the sport had to be greatly diminished following the family losses, his health, and the overall trajectory wrestling was taking, which Bret seemed disinclined to favor or embrace.

I think it's wrong to call "transitional" champions as "failed", since their mission with the Top Prise is not to be TOP Guy defending champion, face of the company, but rather to actually "transition" the World title from one TOP Guy to the other. It's not their fault that they were NEVER meant to be booked as Great champion. They just played their role to a perfection. So to call "transitional" Champs as "Failed" is the same thing as calling Santino Marrela's career since he was one of the greatest "comedy" wrestlers, but never won a World title. Not everyone is supposed to be a World champion, and not every World champion is supposed to be booked as Face of the company.

The company spent loads of money of trying to bring in the company but by the time he arrived, they automatically dropped the ball with him which is absurd, considering the fact that he was coming off the infamous Montreal screwjob. Sure he would’ve become world champion by 1999 but at that point he was damaged beyond repair in terms of his booking and by the time that happened his career would abruptly ended from the Infamous kicked from Goldberg. Transphobia: comedy welfare for conservatives. Meanwhile, in the real world, estrogen melts muscle mass and no trans woman has won Olympic gold. But ciswomen have beaten each other to literal death in mixed martial arts. Also, the transwoman who won AEW gold put on good matches with her peers, unlike Harvey there. Get over it, crybaby. Trans brains resemble the brains of the sex they identify with, even before taking hormones.

Yes, David Arquette is a nice guy and a wrestling fan. He didn’t want to win the WCW title because he knew the fans would hate it, but Russo convinced him to go through with it. Then he donated all the money he made in WCW to the families of dead wrestlers (like Owen and Bulldog). Class act, and he deserves to be recognized for it.

You remembered that Russo booked VKM and Arquette to win the title, but you forgot when he booked HIMSELF to win it over Booker T. That might be the worst champion ever, bro.

I don't understand that you understand the role of "transitional" champions well and still put wrestlers like SGT. slaughter and Stan Stasiak on the list of "failed" champions. Their mission was not to be a great champion, how is that a failure.

Where is the tribal chief, I mean everybody knows wrestling is predetermined but the fact that he's had so many title defenses. So many of them have been won by outside interference compared to actual title defenses is insulting to the fans!

seriously, only 27 defenses in a thousand days and none of them were clean. will never understand this whole "1000 days" fame B.S. Roman was pushed and forced to years to be the new Rock, except Roman has zero charisma and half the audience hates him and are tired of it.

Jack swagger was A disgrace! He still is! Being green is a mindset and Jack swagger proves it. He has no concept of how a match should take place or how to put one together even when he is working with some experience and a great opponent like the undertaker. Jack swagger also cannot speak on the mic both because of his embarrassingly bad speech impediment that he seemingly has done no work whatsoever to improve, but because he has no idea of how to put a promo together. Think of people like Dusty Rhodes who also had a speech impediment and made it work fantastically well. Jack swagger not only doesn’t have a good body he actually has a body that is built so strange it looks even worse than a normal one. The strangeness of how his body is built contributes to why he cannot put a match together because his body is built to do a very specific style of wrestling real wrestling. I think this video hit the nail on the head when I said he personifies no personality

Khali was a good champ.just because he barely moved didnt matter as he felt like a final boss and monster.he was pushed really well .some people need to understand that most fans are casuals and dint care for headloccks and suplexes.i actually find punjabi prison match a cool stipulation and a good match. I agree on swagger he felt off even in ecw i didnt like the way he was pushed so much

The two that really deserved better were Andre and Slaughter. In the world of "what if...", what if Andre's health had not been so bad in 87-88? While he never needed a belt and giving him one only meant he had to lose it - had his health allowed, a short 2-3 month run with the belt where he squashes all the baby faces while Hogan "recovers" from an "injury" would have been a fun way to give the big guy one run with the belt before never wrestling again after WrestleMania 3. In Slaughter's case, I think he would be the first to tell you he was never meant to be the top guy. Allowing him a transitional run with the belt was a sign of respect for the years he put into the company. The issue was the gimmick. Sarge could play a heel really well while still being a drill sergeant (just ask Bob Backlund ) - there was no need to turn him into an Iraqi sympathizer against his established character.

Khali was far from a failed champion. he was world class athlete way before wwe n he opened a huge market . he made wwe way more money as champion then many other top superstars. yes wwe was famous in india since 90's from rock n stonecold's time but it was khali who made wwe realise they were missing money from such huge market. no one could understand great khali on wwe tv even in india but the way he was genuinely nice person , people took liking to him. so i'd say adding khali's name here was definitely a mistake.
