Your explanation of the airflow and vacuum usage just solved my problem! Dealer said I needed a new turbo (which I know I did from oil burn in the exhaust). They wanted $6,000 and I figured on a 2013 that was the value of the car, but it's in great shape and I love it. A buddy who's a mechanic and I did the work over a weekend. We were pressed for time and rushed the final reassembly the last day (always asking for trouble). I was getting the "Drivetrain Malfunction" that your turbo video talked about. I believed it was something to do with vacuum boost actuator, though mine seemed set-up right. Long story longer, watching this video helped me fully understand the vacuum system and trace the problem to my own stupidity. On the re-assembly of the vacuum tank > solenoid > actuator, I reversed the darn vacuum lines! Thanks for this video. You saved me an embarrassing and expensive trip to the BMW dealer for a 30 second hose swap!

Hello Sir, I appreciate you share your knowledge. Thank you. I have a BMW F11 525D Xdrrive 2012. I had a turbo crash. My booster pressure solenoid is full of oil and short circuit. My car is over 11 year old. I also should replace the vacuum pump. BMW original pump is very expensive. Do you know where to buy a quality aftermarket pump? I also want to replace my hoses

Hello again. I replaced vacuum pump but dealer said it needs to be replaced after diagnostic. What could I have done wrong?? The vacuum reservoir does have a little oil in it. Could it be vacuum lines that need replaced? Will I have to replace vacuum pump again with new hoses? I can return pump to rock auto and get a new one, and find out where to get the hoses, if that's the issue. Also the hose that goes to waste gate is closed off and doesn't connect to anything. I can make a short video if that helps. Thanks again for your time and assistance.

The hose to the waste gate should not be closed off, you won't build any boost, that may be your problem right there. The little oil in the hoses and reservoir can be cleaned out with compressed air and some carb cleaner. To see if the vacuum pump is working just start the vehicle and the line coming from the pump before it tees off check for vacuum, if it has vacuum it's not the pump.

@@motorcarnut Hi looks like I have an electronic wastegate setup. When I did vacuum pump I didn't clean out reservoir from cover or the lines. I know how to clean them now, thanks. Was I supposed to change the vacuum pump seal around camshaft? I will take apart and clean the hoses. I made a short video on my setup where line is closed off if you have a couple minutes. Also I looked at old vacuum pump and saw a small filter seal which I am not sure if it came in the new one or if I was supposed to put it into the new one when I did the transplant switching the vacuum lines from old pump to new pump.

@Motorcarnut dealer had done original diagnostic and said valve cover gasket and oil filter housing along with vaccum pump needed replaced. Oil was leaking from those areas and I replaced each successfully. I had oil residue from original leak on exhaust which you confirmed just needed burn off. Since it was my first time doing this repair, I took it dealer diagnostic and they said vaccum pump needs replaced. I don't have any error codes on the car but there is oil in reservoir cover, this I'm trying to identify issue before replacing again. I'm trying to save the 1k dealer quoted me for job I already did. Car is driving just fine like you said it was oil residue needed burn off. At end of day, I want to fix the vaccum pump oil in lines and reservoir to avoid other problems. What do you suggest? I plan on cleaning the oil out from reservoir cover with break clean and air hose as suggested. Not sure if I need to do anything else?

I gotcha. No you will be good to go after you clean out the lines. The oil in the lines was caused by the failing old pump. So now you can enjoy your car because you saved yourself a lot of money!!! Good for you!!

Greetings, Very informative video explanations. I have a question, I have 16 X5 40E with engine malfunction and 222D04 fault code which points to vacuum pump short circuit to ground. So given this, does it indicate the vacuum pump is shot? Engine stopped and won't start and only tries to crank but will not continue. When engine was running, it blew smoke out of driver side exhaust. What is you opinion, change the pump? Thanks a million.

Thanks for the video. I've got an X5 x40e 2016 and the car will not go to hybrid/battery mode and drivetrain malfunction is also coming up. I am getting these codes- 222D02 Electrical Vacuum pump, Activation: Current level too great when starting and also 222277 EME, Ground connection monitoring sensor signal not plausible. Is it because of the issue you mentioned in the video?

Yes, if you have a air compressor. And the oil has to be removed. It’s a vacuum line and oil would be no good and cause problems

This as an exact find for the issue in my X1 2013 28i. I changed oil housing gaskets and almost TRIED to change the valve cover gaskets and cover + timing chain (probably still will soon). But I found oil dripping out of the reservoir as you've shown here, only much more of it. My question is this: Once I change the vacuum pump - is there anything else that may have been impacted by this (such as the vacuum lines, waist gate actuator, etc) that also need to be replaced?

I thought I made one, but its in the back of the engine and goes through the valve cover and mounts the the cylinder head with 3 torx T40 I believe. It's not that hard to replace but can be a little tricky because of the limited room but completely doable. Just tkae off the plastic engine cover and reach in back of the engine and you will feel/see it. Has i keyway the goes into the intake cam. Hope this helps some.

@@motorcarnut thanks for replying. I just came from outside trying to get pump out. It’s a T30 head. Unfortunately only my low profile short plastic ratchet fix behind there and it’s can’t take the pressure to loosen up the screws. I need a metal ratchet with a longer handle. If I only had 2 more inches of clearance 😮💨. Also that’s for your video. I had this issue for years and not even a BMW master mechanic knew about this issue. 🤦🏾♂️

I accidentaly disconnected the hose a couple months ago and no oil came there, but last months I disconnected it again by accident while peeking below the cover and saw a bit of oil drops coming out of that hose.... do I HAVE to replace vacumm pump right now? or how much time do I have to do so...? A few more questions, my 2015 BMW X1 doesn't have boost solenoid, but has electronic wastegate setup. Therefore, that second line to reservoir is closed off. Should it have boost solenoid connected to that second line reservoir? Lastly, I cleaned all vacuum lines but the line that T's off to the right and goes underneath brake fluid reservoir still has oil in it and I sprayed brake clean into and compressed air to get most oil out but still has small amounts oil when I spray air into it. I am trying to figure out how to get to the end of that vacuum line to clean it completely as everything else has been cleaned successfully. The only thing I can think of is removing the assembly's area brake reservoir to try and get to to the end of it. I'm curious what it does at end which I hope its not full of oil whatever it does there. Sorry for all the questions. I am so close to finalizing these repairs.

I might just spray that hose one more time and reinstall everything. I bought a 150 URO vacuum pump instead of the $500 genuine BMW part. I hope that's not the issue. I will see once I put everything back on. I still would have liked to clean that last vacuum line completely...
@motorcarnut
Жыл бұрын
No electronic wastegates don't use the solenoid, the solenoid is to let vacuum to a mechanical wastegate so you're fine. Don't worry if you can't get all the oil out as long as the car runs fine, because the new pump won't dump anymore oil. URO is a good part, no need to spend more. And I wanted to thank you for the channel donation, I really appreciate it so much!

@@motorcarnut So I have a 2009 bmw 750li with the n63 and there’s been this drivetrain malfunction code popping up. I’ve scanned it with an OBDll scanner and the only code I get is p0025 - timing over retarded bank 2. The drivetrain malfunction sometimes pops up at cold start which idles roughly, but other times it starts up fine. However most of the time the malfunction comes up when I rev it up to 2500 rpm. Could the vacuum pump cause these sort of things or is it something internally that’s damaged?

There can be a leak on the boost side of the intake tubing, it can also be a failing diverter valve. Also possible the boost valve is bad creating the code. Does the car lose power after the light comes on?
