Falcom has become my favorite developer in recent years, and the Y's and Trails franchise are both incredible. There aren't a lot of us Falcom fans out there, but the passion the fans for these games is very, very deep. I played Trails to Zero last year, beat it on normal mode, then played new game+ nightmare mode, and beat that too, however, I'm still planning to buy zero on day one it comes out on September 27th, 2022, and beat it multiple times again, because it's just such a damn fun to play game. You know a company is doing something right when there are multiple games where you say "this one stayed in Japan, never came west, but there is a fan translation". Falcom is the company that defined "Fan Translation" with the Geofront team. If there is a secret to Falcom's growing popularity in the west these days, it's that the company just makes games that are fun to play. Imagine that. Make games that are fun to play, and people will want to play them.

Trails in the Sky is my favorite arc as well. All of the games in the Legend of Heroes from Sky through Steel are amazing, but there is something about the Idyllic land of Liberl and the coming of age tale starring Estelle and Joshua that really captured my heart. The fabulous XSeed translation boosted my enjoyment tremendously as the dialogue is engaging and the way Estelle comes across as a feisty teen girl is very authentic. Compare how awesome Estelle is in the Sky games with how she comes across in the later entries and you will see what I mean about the XSeed translation. They just did such a fabulous job punching up the text and the fun messages they put in the treasure chests are just further evidence of how much effort they poured into the project to make it something special.

I only have to name the completely unexpected Blue Reflection Second Light (sequel to Blue Refelection), Dusk Diver 2 and The Caligula Effect 2. My favorite Falcom game would be a tie between Ys Books I & II (the Turbo CD release), Ys VIII, and Ys IX. I'm not surprised that Erick ranked Ys III pretty low because of statements he had made about it previously and I'm probably one of the few people who actually loves that game. For those curious about playing Ys III, check out the Genesis version because it plays the most smoothly and the platforming is easier than in the other releases. Also, the soundtrack is awesome on the Genesis soundchip. If you struggle with the bosses, try watching playthrough videos on KZitem for some tips because most of the bosses (all of them except for the dragon in the fire cave and the final boss if I remember correctly) can be cheesed and taken out very quickly.
@AssociationAdmirer

At first I assumed he was joking when he said Ys III is extremely hard. The game's biggest weakness is that it is brokenly easy. Playing the Turbo CD version, I beat virtually all of the bosses just by jumping into them and mashing attack. If he had trouble with the Ys III bosses, I can't imagine how he ever got anywhere in Ys I or Ys II, since using the brute force method with those bosses will just get you killed in under five seconds.

Considering that I got 3 of Falcom's classic games on the SONY PSP and 2 of Falcom's JRPGs on the PS Vita. Brandish I imported from Japanese PSP. Ys Book 1 and 2 on the PSP Western Release. The Legend of Heroes Trails of the Sky 1 on the PSP Western Release. Ys Origins on the PS Vita Western Release. Ys 8 on the PS Vita Western Release. I am lucky enough to have even one considering these JRPGs never really came to PAL region until the PS Vita releases, aside from Brandish that I imported from Japan I had to import the Western release from America. Thank God for the PSP and PS Vita being Multi Region systems for me. Only person I know in my real life who knows about the Ys series only played Ys 6 on the PS2 and he thought that Konami made the Ys series, I had to remind him that Konami did the Publishing and Localization of the earlier Ys releases into the West during the PS1 and PS2 era. Then XSeed took over in the Localization of many Falcom games from mid 2000s onwards. So many other Falcom JRPGs that never got localized into PAL region back in the 80s and 90s so you guys in North America were lucky with what you did get.

Ys VIII has a few issues which drive me crazy. One is not showing an arrow for which way you're facing on the map. When they don't show the "door" in the region map it makes it a pain to know which direction you're facing. The game constantly forces you go go back to the camp when you're going to a new area as well - and depending on the situation, it can be extremely difficult to get back to where you were. I was stuck for literally hours because the game forced me to go back to the camp at a time when I was right in front of a door, so I couldn't do the usual thing where I go through the maps to figure out where the map is faded out and return there. All the maps were completely filled in, and because doors aren't shown on the region map - it looked like I had explored everywhere.

The reason Tear of Vermillion feels so different is because that version you played is actually a re-imagining of the original game. It was actually released just a few years before Trails in the Sky. Moonlight Witch (1994) and Tear of Vermillion (1996) came first on PC98. After That, Moonlight Witch got a revision port on Windows (1999) with some extra scenes (which didn't make it into the PSP port for some reason), then came Cagesong of the Ocean (1999), and finally the re-imagining of Tear of Vermillion (2000). The original Tear of Vermillion is not divided by chapters and is quest based. You can choose which party members you want by finding them and hiring them and you solve different quests in the order you want. It's very openworld like. Being quest based doesn't mean it has less story. It actually has a few scenarios that don't appear on the revised version. The overall history is mostly the same, and certain events happen at the same time in both versions with some differences. Other times it has completely different scenes, like important characters dying that don't die in the revised version. The final boss is not exactly the same either. I won't say any spoilers in case someday someone translates this version. If you actually want to see a few different scenes check this videos: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xm2mnpd3cZx9hX4 kzitem.info/news/bejne/xm2mnpd3cZx9hX4 The first one is the travel from Theta to Valkd (the major event is mostly the same). The second one is a completely new event that happens in Valkd afther the previous scene. Both of them are MAJOR spoilers. It's a very different game. Original Tear of vermillion story was released in japan for PC98 and Playstation. Revised Tear of Vermillion story was released for Windows and PSP.

I probably write this on every video that has it featured but it pisses me off just as much as BotW pissed me off with Zelda and Arise pissed me off with Tales of. I am a big Ys fan. Ys8 though. What a sack of shit. I haven't played Ys 9 but Ys Origin obliterated Ys 8. The mapping system in Ys 8 is abysmal, the worst I have used, I had to back track through load screens so many times because stupid things on the map like head South, enter load screen, reappear on the map to the East, instead of South - the actual direction I went. Even though facing back to the North I could see the area I had just left, right in front of me. The map had dumped me East and I had to go straight back through the loading screen I had just come out of. The characters, God, I want to kick them all in the face. They are all irritating little bell ends. The systems? Why did I have to go to the forge to the swap shop, to the forge? Who thought it was worth adding that to the game? It was remember items, go trade 4 of one item for 2 of another, return to forge with 2 items. Who thought a pointless short walk, to a 4/2 division sum, in cluttered menu's, to return to the forge was a fun mechanic. It was like early years maths annoyingly worked in to a game. It is like everything in the game is designed to kick the action in the balls and bring it to a halt. Another example, discover a new area, get called to base, or enter a new area soulless animation that was intended to be awe inspiring but never was, just to slow it for those extra seconds again. Every time any excitement brewed it was smashed on the floor. Again I'll mention Ys Origin and I remember every level excited to see the boss. Ys 8 I was like that fucking same creature again, I'm sick of the sight of the thing. Adol's dreams, soooo boring. The story jump a few chapters in, bringing with it a massive pace slow down. The OST was not as good as past entries. The graphics weren't great at all. I don't really care about graphics if they work, they work. In Ys 8 I didn't find the game world very believable. I remember running in Tales of Zestiria and thinking it was pretty empty but something felt like it was a real albeit an empty world, even the nuances felt deliberate. The way paths went and the way hills turned and rivers cut through, the strange town layouts, they all felt kind of real. Ys 8 there were so many examples (I won't state them for scenery spoilers) but I was always thinking that looks out of place, that's a bit weird, that looks like it was just dumped there etc. It was just an abortion of a game. Imagine a DJ having a heart attack and collapsing mid set at a party, the party would come to a grinding halt. Well Falcon threw a heart attack at Ys 8 at every opportunity. It is the least actiony, action game ever, awful pacing and an insult to some of the masterpieces before it. Origin, Felghana, Celceta, Napishtim, everything on the old engine shits all over that slog fest Ys 8. After countless attempts at the game, over many years and desperately wanting to like it, I just don't. Napishtim was too hard for me but even so and including that I retired from it very, very early, it was still more fun than Ys 8. It's so weird now that as soon as a company updates the visuals on a franchise, even though they fuck everything else, people can't wait to have a big wank over how good it is. A 3D open, or semi open world does not make something great. I was certain I had just not ventured far enough in to Ys 8, as the reviews didn't match what I was seeing, then eventually I was so bored I couldn't do it anymore. Hours and hours wasted. I did not like a single character either but several really grated on me badly. I was glad of not having to listen to the little cunts ever again when I finally threw in the towel.

I'd swap Celceta with Xanadu Next because i find this last more interesting and fun than the other. In Celceta they totally missed the opportunity of telling more of the past of the protagonist (just one or two images), the "conflict" is even more generic than other games, the gameplay not much more than what you get in 7. Xanadu Next has an interesting level up system, unlock weapon abilities, addictive dungeon crawling that is a bit different than Ys, story is a bit darker and with a different character design (more adult-like that is a interesting change of pace if you want to see something different).

Maybe last year I first started playing Ys after taking a gamble on Ys Origin since I found it at a store pretty cheap and thought it looked basically like Zelda on the box... Well, it wasn't really like Zelda, but it WAS fucking awesome, especially the music. After that I went and played Ys 1&2, 3 and 4 (fan translation) on Turbo CD. Holy shit. There's something about that style of cutscene and voice acting from those old CD games that pushes all the right nostalgia buttons for me. I was really wary of Ys 3 because it was one of my most hated games as a kid, but I loved it this time around, especially for the music. I can't believe anyone would play the old Ys games on anything but Turbo CD... the music is what makes these games.

Ys VIII is amazing, for me Ys 2 the final chapter on MSX2 back in the days is what got me hooked on the series. Also, check Dragon Slayer IV MSX2 which is a great Falcom game.

13:12 Fun fact: Nepishtim is a reference to the immortal character from the epic poem The Epic Of Gilgamesh. He is controversial because the story of how he was granted immortality by the gods is very similar to the story of Noah's Ark and since The Epic Of Gilgamesh was proven to be written before the bible it is cited as proof of plagiarism. In The Epic Of Gilgamesh there is even a snake that steals immortality from right under Gilgamesh's nose not too unlike the snake in the Garden Of Eden tricking humanity out of immortality. Edit: Please don't hate me if you are a religious person reading this. I am not saying God doesn't exist, just that humanity's record-keeping is suspect. Also, I misspelled from bad memory and the full name is Ut-napisthim for any spelling maniacs who are going to pretend like they have no idea what I am talking about.

I've always wanted to play Popful Mail but obviously I cannot afford the Sega CD one. I'd have to take out a loan 🤣 and no I don't have a computer so I have no way to play ROMs or ever drives or anything like that. I wouldn't mind having a fan translated super famicom /Super Nintendo version but I haven't found anybody who has actually put it on a cartridge. The Japanese one goes for about $100 but I don't know Japanese. Think whatever you want but for games like this, I love when they put them on a cartridge because you can get them for 15 to $25! But I haven't seen one for Popful Mail with English

my whole story with falcom games started with trails of cold steel one, started slow i didnt even know what the game was about i was just looking for a cool turn based game, watched some gameplay from a youtuber and i thought "meh lets try it it doesnt look that bad" ooohhhh man, what a decision, and a good one at that, i love me a good story and the trails sagas fulfilled my hunger for it, the first cold steel game starts slow yes, but i found the characters interesting, and OMG the ending, i was so shocked at the ending like wtf, then i played the second, then the third, then i moved on to trails of sky, had a blast, continued with the crossbell duology and right now im just missing the second crossbell game, im planning on playing it soon but man, what a good franchise and cool story, my personal favorite was trails of cold steel 4 because of feels you know, the ending to it all, but the first cold steel is also a top tier for me, the only game i didnt really enjoy was the thirs trails of sky game, cool story but the setting for it was meh, i dont like the fact it was based in a big dungeon, i like travelling the world and seeing new places, not a big ass dungeon so yeah that killed it for me

The Legend of heroes IS NOT the first one., is the 6th one, Dragon Slayer is the first one, it was released i think on the PC 88, the second one is Xanadu, Romancia is the 3rd, the 4th is Drayse Family (Legend of the wizard), the 5th is Sorcerian and the 6th one is The Legend of Heroes, this one carried the series, there is no Dragon Slayer 7

Yeah, just because you don't travel a lot doesn't mean it's bad, it's even more focused on the story than the other two sky games, and honestly that's a big part of why someone would want to play sky

I fell in love with Ys and Trails, so I can't wait for the duology to drop so I can play them. Ys 8 is also at the top of my list. It's the first Ys game I played, but damn it's so good that I didn't want to put it down. Gonna pickup the PS5 port and enjoy playing through it again. Couldn't get into Tokyo Xanadu though, just didn't care for the combat. It felt like a slower, more convoluted version of Ys

ACTUALLY that mexico based rpg for the NES is one of the first Nihon Falcom games., was originally released for the japanese PCs of the 80s, as most falcom games focused first in those and also on the MSX, and then on the PC engine., but anyways that game is one of the first with Dragon Slayer., Xanadu and a bit later Ys

I wasn't that thrilled by it honestly... I can't quite put my finger on it. There's definitely a ton of good stuff in there, but I guess the combat seemed pretty button mashy, and I can't get the flash move/dodge to really work, and all the hunts and base defend missions just wore me down. Story was cool, characters were basically cool... voice acting kind of put me off a little too I guess. I liked most of the Dana stuff but it switched back just when I was getting into it usually. Really good game, don't get me wrong, but I didn't find it to be the perfect masterpiece people seem to think it is. OH. almost forgot... the MUSIC. The music in the older Ys titles is god level stuff... this one.... lots of repetitive stuff, not so guitar/rock sounding. The music in the earlier titles is almost better than the game itself. Music was a big letdown in 8. I recently got Monstrum Nox but haven't played it yet other than a few minutes to make sure it worked. I'll probably get into that one soon. Looking forward to it.

Falcom needs to do some compilations like the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. I would love to have Ys Origin-7 remastered for PS5 with all the different versions. And the 3 trails in the sky all on one disc for ps5. Please Falcom

I can't really separate the trails series into individual titles due to just how tight the world building is. But Ys 8 is probably the best single falcom title.

Please do not miss the Gagharv trilogy of the legend of heros. It is surely bad gameplay, and the main storyline is surely generic, but the thing about those games is about their definition on "legend" and "hero", by portrait the legendary NPCs from the mc perspective. Not the best JRPG I've played, but definately best character development and literature value, play once and you will know exactly what I mean

I'm struggling to get into Ys VIII so far to be honest. I loved all the other 5 or so Ys games I played through, there's nothing "wrong" with VIII except a really big same-y looking world is just not a whole lot of fun for me so far. I enjoyed the more confined areas of Oath and Seven.

Cold Steel 1: 7/10 Cold Steel 2: 6/10 Cold Steel 3: 9/10 Cold Steel 4: 8.5/10 Despite having played only the CS games and not having liked them as I would have wanted to, I really love the Trails series for its world building, and I can't wait to play the Liberl and Crossbell arcs (or skip Liberl due to lacking a PS4 or a PSP and having spoiled myself about them).
