actually the range of the radar is 160nmi. zooming in or out does not alter the range, just the filtered picture you get. the correct term for the shape of the radar beam would be a cone. If you already locked a target, you will not loose that target if it dives below your radar elevation envelope. The radar will look for the target in the last spot it saw it every so often and adjust elevation if necessary. It is of course always good to have the elevation set though. The radar does not interrogate. It scans through a database file on how different aircraft look like on radar from various angles and tries to find a match. If there is a clear match it will display such a match. The radar gets better resolution if the contact is closer. In the real world, things like exposed engine turbines through the air intake can create a good giveaway because the radar can actually count the turbine blades, although I doubt that's modeled. You don't have to use the FCR for the amraam. You can fire them in boresight mode. Not advised though. The bracket thing is actually called the dynamic launch zone. Or DLZ. The circle of the missile shows valid firing solutions. It's size depends on range to target. If you're at close range, the circle shrinks because the missile can not turn in time. Any solution in which the small circle is within the larger one is okay. If you want to give the missile the best amount of energy, not wasting any for initial turning for intercepting, then you want that small circle dead center in the larger one. You don't want the target on boresight. You want the intercept point of the missile on boresight. The amraam doesn't need radar guidance. you can just leave it be and it will proceed to the last known intercept point and turn it's radar on. You will likely miss, or hit something else. The F-16 can engage multiple targets at once, just need to have them softlocked. When softlocked, you can use tms right to cycle between the targets. That is best done not in tws mode, as cycling through the contacts can take some time. You didn't go over the missile timer. All the MFD labels are showing what the current state of something is. If you click cool, you disable the cooling as the missile was already being cooled.

Hey krause good tutorial as always Just a small note. A decent reason for a fox 3 long would be to force an enemy into a defensive posture so that they (lets assume a russian radar semiactive radar missile) would be forced to break lock while you press up closer to them for the kill

@Shurryy Keep in mind if you hold down TMS up it will focus the radar beam on a narrow area of the sky which can allow you to acquire and lock onto a target quicker. Also consider the geometry of the nose while using the radar. If you are at high alt, and nose level, it will be difficult to lock onto a radar contact which is low - you need to aim your nose at the target. It's a search light, not a solid wall that comes out from the nose.

Yeah np glad to help and yes Bulls-eye is a lot simpler then you think. I'm not the best at BMS just got into it my self but from my years of sim experience I feel I can safely say bulls-eye is a predetermined location. When someone calls out bulls-eye 235 095 you then want to make your HSD on the MFD your center or interest and slew the cursor until it reads at the bottom left 235 for 095. You now have the location of what ever was called out.

@n00p3 The radar gimbals the seeker head of the AIM9 toward the radar contact, otherwise the seeker head is just centered in the HUD (the diamond). So if you were to launch, it would only be effective without lock if it was relatively centered in the HUD and you heard a tone. I mean there's always a chance it will acquire after launch if you just pickle it off, but for best results make sure the radar is locked onto it.

Hi Tanit, awesome tutorial, a real treat! I am looking for more detail about the AIM-120, but I am struggling to make sence of the manuals. Can you go into more detail about weapon settings, M/F poles, how do I know when the missile goes active and I don't have to keep the target tracked (it was clear to me in AF, but not in BMS), timing information... If you could do that it would be amazing, thanka a lot

Excellent tutorial! Although I do have a question that I think someone could help out with. If I select the dogfight mode and setup a team furball and all that good stuff I can only track my enemies for the first few seconds, later on everybody kinda scatters around and they're all over the place, my FCR is constantly blank and no matter where I fly I just can't seem to reacquire enemy jets. What can I do to locate my targets more easily?

Hey Krause. I love your Videos and i learned a lot from it. But i have to say that the maximum Gimbal of the Aim9 in HMCS mode is much higher. Normally the seekerhead is bound to the radar. So the limitaion in your video is the radar cone! If you want to use the full gimbal of the aim9 you have to decouple it from the radar. Go to the SMS page when the sidewinder is selected and press OSB#18 (or 19... not sure). regularly it shows "slave". So press it once so it shows "bore". (not possible with every sidewinder i guess. But definetly with the aim9x and also the IrisT) The Sidewinder is decoupled from the radar now. So when you select any target on your radar now the sidwinder will get no lock on it. But you have a much bigger cone for your seekerhead in Dogfight mode with HMCS. (around 90degrees off boreside) ........ It is also possible to decouple your Amraams, but i didn't figure out the advantage so far. Also don't forget to cool your seekerheads before you fire your heaters (also SMS page). (In Dogfight mode they get auto-cooled) Sorry if you already know this stuff. But then at least it might be helpful for other people who watch this. Keep it up!

+Anaximander29A -Hi, I bought the standard Falcon 4 (boxed version 1.01) a few days ago but there are severe graphics problems on my high-end Win 7 PC. I've juggled all the graphics options without success and am on the verge of uninstalling it. I know it's a 2005 sim so maybe it won't run on modern hardware? Any suggestions/advice/death threats etc?
@Anaximander29A

Tungsten Kid yeah, go to www.bmsforum.org/forum/content.php, make an account and donwload this: www.bmsforum.org/forum/showthread.php?15666-Falcon-BMS-4-32-Full-Installer-(Base-plus-U1-U6) then download update 7 from the same page. Falcon BMS is a complete overhaul of Falcon 4.0, which works fine with newer operational Systems like Win7 / 8 or 10. But during the installation you need the path of the original Falcon.exe, which you have now. (you need it due to copyright issues). You have a better version of Falcon 4.0 then, with clickable cockpit and some realism upgrades and much more stuff. If you have any more questions or you need some help to get into the "game", you can contact me again here. PS: Falcon BMS is not an upgrade to Falcon 4.0 or anything like that. It is a complete independent program. So you can uninstall your Falcon 4.0. You just need the .exe as i said.
