The Gold version has so much character. On the other hand, the Silver affords a more neutral presentation, which may be more in line with the original purpose of the LS3/5A? Hard to say really. Both great. Thanks Kev.

I am a bit confused in that all LS3/5a speakers are supposed to sound the same due to the tight tolerance and specs. How do they compare to my Proac S1C speakers? Would the golds be an upgrade or just different. One thing I am gutted about is I chose a musical fidelity MC2 MkII speakers when I bought my first HiFi in 1990 from Seven Oaks HiFi. On demo we’re the Roger’s LS3/5a but they were a long way from the seating position and it was a rushed demo. I would have bought the Roger’s and kept them. I had intended on buying the Mission 780SEs at the time as they were the WhatHiFi 5* winners at the time. You live and learn. Please keep the videos going, really appreciate your time. If I were to buy Celestion SL6 which version should I look out for? Thanks

All the SL series are good, I love them. Watch out for splitting surrounds and crinkled tweeters. LS3/5a should all sound the same however.. Chartwell used better inductors, Spendor matched the drivers more accurately etc etc.. with the falcon it’s a case of the crossovers have been improved by using better quality components.

Terrific video. Very informative and on point. Two questions that may seem obvious to you. My room is 4m x 4.5m (I know, almost square). I listen quite nearfield (about 1.75m). Would that be appropriate? Also, would these be a significant upgrade from Dynaudio Evoke 10’s? My music preference is mostly classical and jazz, with some rock and Latin thrown in for good measure. I listen at reasonable volumes, never at ear splitting levels. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the video, very interesting. I built a pair of Falcon gold crossover LS3/5A's buying the components seperately from Falcon and then putting them into BBC spec cabinets.... That worked out a fair bit cheaper than buying a completed pair from them. I think they sound fantastic.... I've just bought the small Rel T5x sub which i use at very low level....it works perfectly...adding a little more depth without messing around with mids and highs. Classic MKT caps flat sound in the silvers. Low grade MKT caps for that matter. Not that the golds have high quality MKP caps, but surely better because of the film type. Both crossover versions have a crazy mark up by the way. Those are cheap caps and coils. What component prices you see in retail its three times less in export price list for professionals and they get cheaper by increasing the quantity. Large parts would result to a filter that can't fit in a tiny box and that's ok but you pay like they use Mundorf Supreme caps and Jantzen air coils when they are not.

How would these falcons compare to the Spendor 4/5? If you've not heard the latter, it would be interesting to see how you think your Spendor 2/3 compare to the falcons in the mids and highs. Thanks
@dittonworks
2 жыл бұрын
The Classic 2/3 sound quite different to LS3/5a purely based on their size. Scale and authority are definitely in the Spendor’s favour. Mids and tops? My Silver badge are similar to the Classic 2/3’s HF detail but the Golds have more.. the Mids? I’d have to say the Falcons are sweeter on vocals but most instruments falling into the mid band frequencies actually sound a tad more realistic on the Spendor’s. Not really a fair comparison to be honest. I pitch it like this… Ls3/5a for late nights, Spendor’s for day time 😇
@surf6d769
2 жыл бұрын
@@dittonworks thanks a lot. I love my Spendor 4/5s, but sometimes hanker for more scale (and occasionally slightly more bite in the highs, depending on the track). On the flip side , the silky (yet detailed) highs are never fatiguing. You can't have it all though unfortunately. I assumed the 3/1's would be better in my 4x4m bedroom, but actually other than deeper bass and sounding bigger, the 4/5s image better, are quicker, more alive sounding, more cohesive and disappear more convincingly. There's a real charm to these small sealed boxes. Still wonder if I should give the 3/1s another go, on proper open stands (they were on bog standard atacama ones when I demoed). Have also been interested in the Falcon Gold Badge since reading about them, so your thoughts were useful, thanks.

I’ve had the Spendor Classic 4/5s since 12/2021…wonderful monitors with a sweet midrange. I ordered the Falcon GB LS 3/5a…and right out of the box…I think the low/high frequencies are pronounced with more energy in the bass & treble region. The Spendor Classic 4/5s are more laid back…forgiving & romantic. I’m stunned by the Falcon’s. I didn’t expect much more from such a diminutive speaker box. The Falcon’s deliver on advancing the sound quality of the BBC monitors…gorgeous lively sound stage and imaging. Oh and the midrange is well…to die for (cliche but true in this case…it isn’t opinion…fact). The history of this design can literally be heard. Note: both benefited immensely from the power of the SPL 800 Performer amp vs. lower powered amps that I’ve utilized. Roon Nucleus + > Topping D90/Hafler 75 (DACS) > LTA MZ3 (tube preamp) > SPL 800 Performer (185 watts @ 8 ohms).

Under 3K these are as cheap as chips seriously. So the BBC spent then £100K and had to divulge this to the government because this was tax payers money.. If we adjust this for now it still only comes to 1 million in development costs.. You can buy 500K speakers so really it wasn't that much.. Peter Walkers ESL57's are another incredible speaker and one that is infinitely more configurable and probably more accurate..🙂

For clarity , the ls3/5a does not enjoy high current delivery amps , they are 15ohm or 11 ohm and thus need good clean linear and fast voltage delivery , hence they are at their best with class A valve or solid state . This is because such amps are very linear and eliminate crossover distortion inherent in class a/b amps . Reviews like this video are always anecdotal, so take it all with a pinch of salt . As example , i found they sound better with a jl hood 1969 class A circuit diy amp then they did with a rebuilt quad 405 . 😘
