Rabbitbrush is in the family Asteraceae. Also in this family are ragweed and sagebrush. Everyone in this family produces severe allergies in susceptible people.
Rabbitbrush grows all over the southwest. It grows along the road, in weed patches in towns, among crops, and in livestock fields. It is a big showy plant that can be up to seven feet tall and has bunches of yellow flowers. it is one of the signs of fall in the west.
At the beginning of September, is usually when ragweed season hits. Awful allergic symptoms include eyes watering, nose clogged up, sinuses hurting, sneezing and coughing, and gunk in the back of the throat.
Turns out Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico fill up with blooming, pollen producing rabbitbrush in September and October.
Interestingly, this gorgeous plant has an unflattering specific name Chrysothamnus nauseous, which means "nauseating".
