I know this thread is pretty old but I wanted to mention that along with all you can learn on the web about bald faced “hornets” it’s important to point out they build nests the size of basketballs in trees and in weeds… just 2 feet above ground level ! Very aggressive and dangerous.

Ignore those little bugs. My grandpaws answer to worms in the apples was they ain't gonna hurt you. They've only been eating apples. And for all the yellow jackets getting crushed in the juice coming out of the cider mill, they help make the cider spicy. hahaha

I'm in Southern California but also noticed figs were smaller this year on some trees, especially Violette de Bordeaux. I know the figs aren't usually large on VDB, but they seemed extra small this year. Strange the same thing happened for you in PA. Also been noticing a little bit of variation in shape and color. Thanks for your videos and reviews. Great collection. How'd you enjoy Flanders this year? I have a Flanders that should produce for me next year. Thanks again.

@PAFigs
5 жыл бұрын
We don't have the same pests here, but coffee grinds liberally spread around the trunk takes care of our ants. You can also use tanglefoot. If the beatles are borers, you are in trouble. If they just eat the fruit, use organza bags to cover the fruit once they start to swell.

Rod Perez, Diatomaceous Earth. Dust onto trunk n leaves, and young fruits. Slices the exoskeleton, dehydrating the bugs which kills them. You can also dump a big pile of DE right at the base of the trunk so they have to crawl through it to go up the tree. Of course this doesn't help with flying insects. Also you have to reapply if the trees get wet; the DE works best if dry, to my understanding. Another idea is parasitic wasps. Tiny little things that aren't interested in *you*--they just want to plant their eggs in the host bug, which eventually dies as the wasp eggs hatch. I doubt they would help with ants, just too many to cover, it would seem.

I've noticed ALL your Fig Trees are potted. Is this because you're trying to control its growth height? What kind of potting soil are you using, and what Zone are you in? How do you protect them during Winter? I live in Zone 6 and have just acquired a tiny Chicago, should I pot it?

I am new to this, but already VERY interested. If I buy a 3 foot, or a 6 foot dormant tree at a nursery, how long will it be till I see fruit? This year?
@PAFigs
5 жыл бұрын
Yes, on most varieties you should see fruit this year. Chances are your nursery only stocks Black Mission, Brown Turkey, and maybe Chicago Hardy. Chicago Hardy is the only one of the 3 worth getting in my opinion.

@@PAFigs Great! I actually picked up a 3 foot Celeste a few hours ago. I know I will need to keep it potted and bring it in come winter, but I wanted to try more than just the Chicago, which I plan to get soon. I know they are available here as I'm in southern PA. They also had a few 6'-7' Celeste trees but were asking $45 for them. They also looked a bit big to stay in the pot permanently.

That was a fig beetle larva just about to become an adult. Be very careful and destroy any you see. if they get established they will desimate your figs. I had a go around with them once. The only way I could get rid of them was to bring in a couple chickens to eat them. I tried everything including sprays to hand picking. If it does get bad just get some removable fencing put it up and borrow a couple chickens from a friend for a couple weeks. The chickens may eat a couple figs but its worth getting rid of the beetle.

Melissa Harris yes, all but two. Mine are stored in a garage, which keeps them from freezing, but also cool enough to keep them dormant. The two I leave outside are in ground and often die back or produce figs very late in the season.

I don't know how old this video is, I just saw it today ( 4/22/17 ) wow! you have sooo many varieties of figs! I took notice you're in Pa., therefore I'd have to ask, if you don't mind? must you bring them all indoors for winter months? as many trees you have, how would you fit them all in the house? I am new to figs. They look so interesting, but I've never ever had them fresh before and I'd love to try some some time if I can ever get some. I had just ordered some little starters and I'll be planting them in containers also, and I am in Pa. also ( Lancaster, Pa. ) looking forward to your next video of your fig trees tour.
