I like that poultry show video I just found your videos the other day I don't watch a lot of KZitem thanks for posting it I was surprised to see using round wire for pheasant pens well really for any birds I used to raise ornamental pheasants always used hardware cloth I suppose a good chicken dog makes a lot of difference but I'd rather build a pin once have a last as long as possible friend of mine used to always say well up Hardware close to expensive I used to ask him what are your birds worth

Very good points! I agree that hardware cloth is a superior item. However many people start off with inferior materials and work up to the better stuff as they gain experience and decide to really invest in the birds rather than just dip a pinkie toe in. As for me? Just habit I suppose on some of it, in other aspects I feel that unless I'm building a pen with all treated lumber then the round wire will do for the time being. Nothing worse than building your "lifetime" pens only to figure out you put them in a horrible spot or you end up moving a short while later. Guess that is where I'm at right now, the idea of this place being permanent residence hasn't really sank in yet. I have found also that many of the predators I've dealt with either dig or try to reach through the wire, so preventing the birds from roosting up against the wire and safe guarding against the diggers helps in that regards. What all species did you raise? I've got a list I'd like to give a try again, most I haven't dealt with for at least 15 years.

Chicken Wired I can relate to it being at least 15 years ago since I had pheasants I raised red and yellow golden pheasants lady Amherst Silvers and Reeves I wasn't trying to be rude asking about the wire I just wondered if you had heard that pheasants sometimes hang their self in the round wire to you I always assumed that was the big round wire and I totally agree with your answer about the Predators 2 and waterfowl I had call Ducks grey English snowy kept separate of course Egyptian geese super Pekin ducks my kids when they were young had the runners and the West Indies then in chickens I used to have sumatra's yokohama's Phoenix always kick the idea around about crossing the three of them just so you know see what kind of long tail I could get going this spring I would like to get a trio of good BB red Bantam Phoenix or silver duckwing probably both I'd also like to get some of those Malaysian somas but I don't know about a Tiny Chicken that might need brought inside for winter I did things somewhat backwards when I had my largest bird collection I was actually living on rental property luckily I had a very understanding landlord that like the animals but he like to travel more so he would come look at my animals and tell me how good they looked and that he never saw birds like that as I'm sure you've heard about yours through the years to I've always admired game fowl I've owned a few game birds in the past but due where they came from I couldn't be positive of their breeding hope my answer wasn't too long thanks again for posting the videos you're very informative

@@tedhawk211 I didn't consider your question rude in the least. Not only that but it spurred discussion for other people to learn from. It seems you and I have raised similar types of birds. I also had the long tails and had a sumatra yokohoma cross hen that was very attractive. She was cinnamon red with a blue tail and blue tips in her neck. as for pheasants I've had pretty much the ones you said plus Elliott's, blue ears and probably a few others to come to mind. we used to have a lot of peafowl also. If you are in the states and looking for bantam Phoenix I would highly recommend Johnny Mellinger.

is it required to vaccinate your chickens to show them?
@ChickenWired

No, but they do need health papers showing that they are disease free. Exact requirements may vary by state

My cousin has breed silver duckwing to bb reds and we didn't get anything that look like the birchin you talking about crazy maybe I'm just not understanding what you mean by silver? We got red hens and off color (yellow) roos

To clarify, silver and gold (red) are the base color genes. Crow wing and duckwing are two of the base alleles responsible for pattern. They dictate where the red or silver goes. So in breeding birchen is to brown red what silver duckwing is to b.b. red. Not only that. But Crow wing would be dominant to duckwing so your duckwing birds wouldn't look true duckwing if they were carrying brownred blood. This I believe is partly why the hatch brown red Cross is popular, because the brownred pattern helps hide the duckwing pattern of the hatch

We took Best and Reserve of Breed, which to be honest is about all the further our birds could go in the show and nobody else showed gamefowl so it was kind of a given. But we also won Champion Non-Standard Large Breed from the Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities. Non-Standard means it is a breed that does not yet have an accepted standard by the major show holding groups.
