I predict: The Expanse mods, Star Wars mods, [insert beloved sci-fi setting here] mods. Holy god imagine how big a strategic game changer jump capable fighters could be, especially if their jump range is a total distance limit, rather than 'x range y jumps' so you can send them on bingo fuel strikes and _if_ they win, pick them up. Suddenly getting jumped by fighters and not knowing where the carrier is, there's a nightmare eah?
@matisan8407
3 жыл бұрын
@@Sorain1 yeah, but then again, if the carriers are made as expensive in materials and personnel as they should be, getting that carrier into position without beijng spotted and ganked will be a whole thing in itself. Also, the fighter range should be fairly short and CAP should be a thing to prevent throwaway raids. Like in real carrier warfare proper a decent CAP can seriously blunt a pure bomber attack.

Also also, remember that captured pilots can be interrogated and potentially give up the carriers launch position

@Geopirate3
3 жыл бұрын
The amount of micromanagement I think would make multiple star systems unmanageable.
@Marth667
3 жыл бұрын
It would really need a sophisticated AI to run multiple systems. That would be amazing, but frankly you'd have to manage one system whilst you out sourced AI managers deal with the rest. It brings to mind a game called Distant Worlds 2 where you had this level of control, starting out as a pre-FTL civilisation and slowly building up to manage an empire. In distant worlds 2 that game which is entirely 2D btw, had AI scripts run your private sector, simulating the citizens of your empire as they develop the systems you hold. It developed the game nicely as you the leader built warships conducted research and so on and so forth the private sector AI ships had an impact in your economy rather they were the economy they built ships in your own dockyards for a variety of uses, mining, transportation, science etc. They could be attacked too, say your enemy has a gas giant in a system outside its borders where private ships mine the gas and then haul it to a refinery to be processed into useable fuel. You can send a destroyer or two to stake out that gas giant and deny that resource to your enemy. Mind you, it doesn't work that well all the time because your enemy can literally jump ontop of your raiding fleet and shoo it away if not destroy it. I find this sort of guerrilla warfare is hampered by this fact since engagement range means little when you can land exactly next to the enemy fleet. Good game though, I would literally lose my mind if this were to become Distant worlds 2 non-official successor.

@@PartyElite Well I doubt Epic will sit on their hands because they absolutely need to grow their portfolio with solid games, especially those without precedent, so that you have no choice but to either a) begin using it, or b) to abstain altogether, which is hard to do for many. This mechanism alone is turning the platform adoption rate into an inevitable date. The company is constantly making offers no one reasonable seems to be capable of rejecting. Like a dragon, they sit on a pile of riches, perfectly fine with burning a quarter of it today, if it'll bring them two more piles tomorrow. For them it's not about the money, it's about the influence. From the dev standpoint, Steam is still taking 30% ffs so this additional safety net, that Epic readily offers, is something every dev must consider because market penetration is zero these days, unless you have millions of dollars to spend on media exposure and promotional spins. I hate Epic btw, please don't get me wrong. It's a company that is silently eroding the gaming scene since its inception, seemingly driven by irrational greed, with long term strategies reminiscent of psychopathic behavior, with how silently they arrive at their objectives, sometimes waiting entire generations of gamers and developers to wane, fostering the proper vibes through their products and services, until they're ready to strike. Tim Sweeney has to be one of the weirdest billionaires in the world, and yet he's almost unknown outside of the core gaming news. All in all, I wouldn't rely on any signs from the dev, because if they find this title attractive (and they probably will if it garners popular interest), all it takes is just one e-mail and a quick napkin calculation.

Thanks for covering, looks really interesting. I’m glad that others appreciate the flavor of sci-fi that focuses more on realism rather than fantasy. Still a bit confused about whether it’s an RTS or more of paradox-style grand strategy. For example, is it more hour-long missions and skirmishes or 10-20 hr long campaigns? The logistics angle also sounds interesting but hopefully doesn’t become constant micromanagement. It seems that there’s no separation of strategic vs tactical layers which is pretty interesting. I like the idea of making each ship more significant, sounds like there could be “hero abilities” that can bring about specializations and unique gameplay. Looking forward to hearing more.

The deeper strategy levels remind me a bit of the old tabletop war games, like Harpoon, where you had to consider all the logistics of moving and replenishing a fleet after an engagement, or indeed, losing a command ship and scrambling to re-establish a command structure. That's where the roots of this sound like they're coming from, which is great. Looking forward to seeing more of this.

The menu looks very similar to EVEonline. I hope they make the interface more user-friendly. For example scanning for enemy ships and pinpointing them. A lot of people gave up on eve because it is a pain. I'm excited to see what this game brings to the table.

That's BS... Players weren't leaving Eve because of the interface...which is pretty simple... They were leaving because of getting ganked and loosing their stuff all the time... They should change the name of it to "Dickbags in Space"... 🤣

Thanks for covering this, this seems very in depth on multiple levels. Pretty crazy stuff, and already kinda feels overwhelming. I'll probably wait to see you play it and get an idea of how it works before jumping in myself. Another game I WISHED had coop to play with friends.. Also a number of ships seem to be heavily inspired by Star Citizen, the miner looks like the RSI Orion, and 2 of the combat ships looks like the Aegis Javelin and the RSI idris.

Shoot an RTS without hitbars? where I can see lucky shots disable a warship instead of whittling down the bar? that is almost an instant sell right there. I am going to be watching this one.

This game looks EXTREMELY promising. Especially what sets it apart is the realism of the lore and the realistic logistics and battle mechanics like vision cones etc. are such good ideas. I enjoy arcadey scifi too, but there was a serious lack of this type of realistic scifi in gaming for a long time. Falling Frontiers looks like it will be "The Expanse" of 4X space games. The execution looks pretty good so far too. I am genuinely excited for this game. Edit: The art style also looks really good and realistic, including not only the ships and stations, but also the skybox. No more colorful nebulas everywhere like other space games. Those nebulas would be navigational hazards in real life. Space is mostly black, except celestial bodies and sunlight, and Falling Frontiers easily manages to look gorgeous without looking like a space rave.

Am a bit curious to hear more about what sort of win conditions the game will include. There was some mention about scenario based single player campaigns but what will the goal of the game be, so to speak? Will the interaction between the faction be purely military combat or will you be able to use diplomacy, trade or espionage to interact with other factions? Will you be able to "win" by some other means than just wiping out all the other opponents? I like the looks of the game and the more realistic hard scifi take on logistic and combat but from the vid (which was very nicely produced) it felt a bit one dimensional so far. If wiping out the opposition is the only possible victory condition then in the end it all comes down to a Zerg rush no matter the complexity of logistic and combat.
