For context, all those Looney Toons cartoons are public domain, due to copyright neglect. The Copyright Act of 1909 only guaranteed copyrights for an initial period of 28 years, which needed to be renewed to be extended further. It's only since the Copyright Renewal Act of 1992 that the requirement for a renewal registration has been removed, retroactively applying to all work published since 1964. Therefore many works published between 1929 and 1963 are public domain, despite being more recent than 95 years. There's actually a whole list of Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons that are in this situation, that can easily be found on Wikipedia.

So is this version of Bugs Bunny also public domain?
@jumpmanfan-u6e
7 ай бұрын
@@GeoffreyDruyts Unfortunately, no. From my knowledge, it had to be the character's first debut with their specific design to enter public domain. Like Mickey, his first debut is Steamboat Willie (even though Plane Crazy was his true debut but that was for test screenings I guess) along with his design from said short and you can use him ONLY that design without getting any problem with Disney.

I just did my homework to get the "You know how it is with these A cards" joke and now the question I've had ever since I was 5 has an answer! It's about gasoline rationing during the war. You weren't allowed to buy gas unless you had a ration sticker on your car, and the A sticker was the most common and got you the least gas. They had stickers with other letters on them depending on what you drove and how important your job was to the war effort, but most people just got A cards and were annoyed with how little fuel they could buy.

I was wondering why this episode was so specific about the gremlins so I looked it up. Gremlins became a thing during the interwar period and were then popularized by a 1943 book by Roald Dahl (an RAF soldier). This episode came out after the book became popular later in the same year. What's interesting about 1943 is that that was when the Germans were starting to lose, but before D-day (which was in 1944). So everything in this cartoon is actually during WW2 instead of after it.
