You make good shit bro. This was also pretty interesting. I had a similar experience when I got a summer job at Stanford. When I would ask questions like "How am I doing?" Or "Is this good work?", my immediate supervisor would always respond with something like "yeah, of course, you're doing fine" Later, I learned she was complaining about me and actually tried to get me reprimanded for something. It was a pretty sobering experience. Just the lack of transparency... I thought we were like borderline friends too, but I guess that's how some things go sometimes. I can't imagine what it would be like to be surrounded by those kinds of people in the voice acting world. I probably wouldn't last I day. Im horrible at seeing through all those head games crap lol

The way the Voice Acting community treated Vic Mignogna was disgusting, especially now that we've learned more about how laughable the Funimation 'investigation' was and how accusers like Monica Rial lied about witnesses. They also look like deranged mafia blacklisting anyone who dares ask for evidence or due process. I've lost all respect for the english dub industry.

Dude, I feel this. I mean, I don't want to be a voice actor, but I do want to be a comic book writer and I feel like it's a similar climate. I'm blocked by like 50% of the people in the comic book industry even when I've never interacted with them. I guess I'm just following the wrong people, idk. But yeah, I don't want to kiss anyone's ass or pretend to be someone I'm not to climb the ladder. That's why I'm just writing my own comics, publishing them under my own label, and doing shit my way. I know that's not an option for everybody, so I'm happy that I'm in a privileged enough situation to do so. And I know there's no real way to change the climate, so I just kinda gotta accept that this is the way it's gonna be.

From the comic nerds I talk to, it seems the issue is very similar. They seldom allow in new people to write either. And when they do, it's usually hacks who write just like them or worse. A name that always pops up is Bendis, and with it, claims that he ruins whatever he touches. There's also the issue of the authors being generally out of touch with the audience. Have you seen Moore talk about how he made Rorschach with the intention that people would hate him for being so stereotypically right wing? It also doesn't help that big players are Marvel and DC, whom are backed by Disney and WB respectively. It's a rough climb

"Job security in the US is shit, or maybe it's just a issue here in Texas" No Chase my man, I live in Colorado. It's just as bad here. Even in Retail or the service industry (speaking from experience), you get fired and they can't be bothered to help you understand why. It's just them showing you the door and asking you to leave. But....BUT you are ALWAYS welcome back as a paying customer. Just...not as a employee. They gotta make their money after all, as that's more important to them then the massive hole in their staff they can't keep filled even though their turn over rate is astronomically high (looking at you Wal-Mart, where people are as disposable as their products). So ya, I think it's safe to say that it doesn't matter where you live. Job security in the US is utter garbage. Going for a Computer Science degree because at least you can make a decent living and job security isn't too bad. And ya, thanks for making this video man. I've lost count of the number of times I've had a conversation with my father about job security and how trash it is in the US and he'll always ALWAYS say something like "Well maybe it's only rough here in this city, but it's probably better else where and more so in another state". Now I can show him, no pops it's bad no matter where you go.

I remember when I watched your vid about the KZitem community how I was like super optimistic like „yeah people are nasty but don’t let it get to you“ and stuff. But I clocked up some miles since then.... and to be honest, I totally agree with everything you said. Especially the part about people just using each other. And the worst part is, that this isn’t exclusive to some profession and/or industry. This is just society. Nobody cares about anything but himself. It’s sad, heartbreaking even. Best example is dating / hook up culture. It’s unbelievable to which length people will go to just park their dong inside you. I’ve had 3 men pretending for month to have interest in me. And when I finally opened up and went to bed with them **poof** gone and never heard from again. Friendships follow mostly the same script. People tell me they like me, wanna hang out because I’m „a likeable character“. What they actually mean by this is something along the line of „you know I actually have enough friends but their are subjects I can’t talk about in these circles and that’s why I want you around. You’re basically a trashcan I can unload on and have a laugh if I feel like it. But please keep your problems away from me. And don’t try to call or message me. I’ll will get in touch. But only if I need you.“ I feel pretty lost at this point and I have no clue how to actually form sustainable relationships. And frankly I’m pretty much ready to give up on that, because all it does is drain me emotionally. So yeah I guess what I’m trying to say is you’re right and you shouldn’t be afraid to talk about these circumstances.
@gorade1901

My response is mostly gonna be focused on friendships, because I genuinely have 0 experience with any form of romantic relationship, so I can't help much there. I've sorta found that most of the time, if there's a genuine friend you can make, it's because you're both chill, you have some common ground, and you both click with each other. The people that have often gone up to me out nowhere just to say shit like "we should hang out" and who clearly don't share that many common interests, or sometimes even characteristics with me are the people I sorta just figured out from the get go that they were never gonna _really_ be friends with me. Those people often only want to _look_ friendly, their goal isn't to hang around people they like, at least not in that instance, their goal is to just *be* liked. It's honestly just the same shit as with social media, there's something about that number of likes or followers that people want. And it doesn't really matter all that much who they are, just as long as they make you look good. And if it's for some sort of industry or business, they want those numbers higher just so they can potentially get close to people that would raise them even higher. People want to be popular. And at least a part of them thinks that if they're well liked by people, then that will bring some sort of satisfaction, but that kind of friend chasing doesn't bring many real friends with it. And most of the people who do that sort of chasing and have real friends only really manage to do that because they met those people in a more natural manner, like they grew up together or lived in the same town, and even then, due to their attitude when it comes to friends, that can be pretty flimsy too. There's not much of anything that's meaningful about it. And those who feel lonely, who feel like they need to friend chase because they don't have one or don't have that many, often end up trying and ultimately failing to create meaningful friendships with other friend chasers, because you're both trying to do very similar things, just for very different reasons. Now that isn't to say that forming friendships doesn't require initiative, it absolutely does, but it just needs to have a more calm approach. Go out and do shit that interests you, whether online or off, not just because you want to make friends, and you will likely find more like-minded people. And if you do find someone that you click with, you can do things gradually, build up that connection just by talking to them when you see them, and once you feel like there's something more there, ask to exchange numbers, or if it's online, just friend them and try to DM them, it can just be about random shit, just so long as both sides understand/enjoy that kind of thing (or just bring random shit up as conversation topics, depends on what's natural in that situation). And eventually, maybe you can hang out. This process is easier if you're more naturally outspoken and talkative, which often those who feel lonely are not, but while some have a talent for it, it *is* a skill you can learn (online or through practice, but online is better for practice anyway cause it's easier to start a conversation there). You don't need to worry about having a larger amount, a small group of close friends is all you really need, and chances are, if that group is active and is fine with others joining, that group will grow naturally over time. At least, that's how I go about it.

Coming from a different industry (computer science) it is the same. Contacts are going to get you further than your actual achievements. Sure on a project level, you might get praise from the customer but the one with the most amount of contacts is always going to land on top. The higher you climb the corporal leather the more you have to contacts because otherwise you are going to hit a brick wall and everyone is going to block you. We are talking about an industry that is mostly about objective results, there is almost nothing subjective about the computer program that you end up with. Either it works or it is a buggy mess.

Struggling to stay afloat in a sea of stars, being controlled, manipulated, taken advantage of, stepped on. You only get to be on top for just a moment and if you are on top you know what it's like to be on the bottom so you push those people back down for as long as you can till your time is up or you settle into mediocrity and the cycle repeats itself on and on. Millions of stars all trying to shine that go out long before anyone who appreciates their work has reached them.

One day we were talking about a story they were working on, I mentioned that their grammer was kinda repetitive. There was a lot of unnecessary swearing and redundant lines of dialogue. Anyway, they asked me if I could tell they were young by the way they wrote which yes I could. Then they started saying how paranoid they get online when they talk about personal stuff with people. After a minute of them rambling and me giving one word responses they tell me they aren't comfortable talking to me anymore. I just told them if they wanted to stop talking to me they could, which is exactly what happened. So these kinda weird interactions with people online certainly aren't rare it seems. I can attest to the backstabbing and anklebiting nature. When I got to see what the majority of these people were like I just kinda walked away from it all. I was at the point of taking paid jobs and starting to build my network, if I had stayed with it I probably would have ended up in a similar place you did, still it would have been "the dream" for the me at that time. That dream just ended up being shattered before I got too deep. Listened through this a couple of times. Some interesting insight in the industry. I never got into voice acting, but growing up I was fascinated by it and it was always one of those "dream jobs" that would excite people just mentioning it as an interest, even though I had no experience. I used to get told I had a good voice for radio back in high school / early college, so a ramble like this on a clear mic really pulls me in. Considering all that blacklisting Hollywood drama, I could not stay on that train you described. It sounds more fun building an abridged series like you mentioned, especially seeing content like WeeklyTubeShow clips and all the projects those two guys were tackling before. But yeah, this was a good listen, and I'm glad to have finally subbed. Always enjoyed your appearances and commentary on EFAP episodes, I just rarely look into the guest channels. And it was neat to realize I've heard you in TFS before.

On the Vic Mignogna note, I did ended up having a small conversation with him at Puerto Rico Comicon. The man seemed genuinely heartbroken when talking about his situation and was super welcoming and friendly even when he wasn't technically allowed to interact or take pictures with fans (VIP Pass bullcrap). He treated me and my girlfriend with respect and we felt genuinely down to Earth while talking to him. Just sucks these type of things keep happening in the industry and social media over all.

I think in fairness you need to take any interaction with a professional actor with a huge grain of salt because it's their job to portray a convincing performance. You can't be certain how they appear is entirely genuine. Not saying always distrust them but be wary of being emotionally influenced by someone who makes a living by pretending to be someone they are not.
@AwwRatz

@@caldw615 Of course, not saying he's absolved of any potential crime or misdoings, just saying my own small personal experience with him. I agree with you comepletely though, his profession is acting and he could use that very easily to decieve, but I try to stay hopeful that he's innocent in all these accusations. Not a perfect human being by any stretch of the definition, like Chase mentioned there are other rumors of him just being unfavorable attitude-wise.

@@caldw615 You're not wrong. However, I'd say that while taking interactions with professional actors with a grain of salt (and being wary of being emotionally influenced by someone who makes a living by pretending to be someone they are not), one must also be careful in not making sweeping generalizations about others. Just because there are actors who aren't always genuine about who they are and what they do... doesn't mean that every actor behaves like that.

Hey Chase, been a fan of yours for a good while. Just wanted to say thank you for making this video. I've just recently started creating content after years of consuming and I've always wondered what the world of Voice Over was really like. I don't have any friends who are in the industry, or at least if they are they keep it very close to their chest, but at one point I was interested in trying to pursue it as a career so getting a first hand recount of the scene is nice to hear. Your other ramble video regarding KZitemrs was very insightful in what it's like to be a content creator on the site and I appreciate you sharing your experiences with this sort of thing! Thanks to you I'll be able to kind of gauge how I want to present myself and who I should be around if I am going to be a part of this community and just let things happen naturally. Thanks again for sharing and keep up the great work dude!

Any industry where "being good" is subjective and unquantifiable, will see people try to find alternative ways to show how good they are. Often this comes down to virtue signalling and bootlicking, these are just a secondary layer of competition, because the first is too vague. You won't see much of this shit in a job like programming or medical science, because how good you are is evident from the results you display. Plus there's way too many people in artistic industries, because people think a fun end-product means a fun job. Programming is difficult, most people can't do it. Anyone can do art and with enough social worming, can get a job doing it. Sidenote, the US seems a lot more toxic when it comes to this stuff. The people on the west-coast are very disingenuous in general compared to other places I've been. I can only describe the entire place as fake. Fake smiles, fake personalities, fake tits, processed food.. even the buildings are fake, as most of them are made out of fucking plywood. As a north/western European, I fucking hate it. If someone here asks me how I'm doing, they actually want to know.

Ehy man, I've never write you a comment but after hearing you I could relate so much, is sad that no matter the country, the industry of voice acting at entry level is such a disappointment to get through. One of the main reason why I didn't pursue my career (aside from money) it was hearing an opinion from one of super veteran "I just went to the morning and don't have any memory of my roles" and it make me face the reality of what kind of ambient I was going for. My friends are still trying to join in but they keep rambling some of the aspects that even in America are present (for example blacklist for no reason, and vicious friendship) but I still wish them the best, I've personally retired from VO but I'm glad to still keep call them friend and still have some contact. Sometime I wish there would be some sustainable alternative, KZitem was a valid candidate but sadly in my situation I had to abbandon everything because I was just not earning enough at the time. I'm sure that you can appreciate enough what you have, feeling loneliness sadly is part of life so I hope for you that after this video you will have a clearer vision about what matter and what you need to do next, nonetheless it was a pleasure to hear some genuine thought.

I've been makin a hodgepodge of KZitem content since I was in High School, 2009-2010ish, but didn't get a mic until I started college. I always liked makin funny voices and dramatic readings but I never thought I was marketable to go out there. Have you tried being really hot? From what I can tell, if you're super hot you can basically do anything you want and get any gig you want. Give it a shot. On a more serious note, I love this kind of content. I'm sure voice acting isn't the only industry that's ruined by people having the "wrong" opinions, but it sure is disappointing. I think part of it is due to how the internet is much more prone to manufacture outrage now than it used to be, and how corporations and production studios seem to give into pressure so easily whenever anything controversial comes up. I think it also might be due to how oversaturated the industry is, since these companies can essentially pick and choose from a huge pool of people. If doing voices was really unpopular, I'm sure you could have terrible hottakes and still make bank due to being high in demand. Super interesting to hear all of this from your point of view anyways, good ramble.

Hey, so a few things: I have been following you for a few years now, and It's usually a pretty nice surprise to see when you upload something new. When you uploaded that FLCL video about a year ago now, it inspired me to write a book. Thought you had it just right, I understood the material, I loved the material, and I could do Progressive/Alternative better myself. It ended up some niche title that appeals to my own autistic preferences, but I got it printed, sold it at a con, and managed to move most of the copies. By most people's standards, it's probably not anything special, and there are some pretty egregious technical flaws with it that I still need to fix even after having it printed, (yikes), but it's my best work and my favorite work I think. As the anniversary of that book being finished is coming up, I wanted to do an audio book for it (filled with the appropriate pillows music and sound effects), and this video could not have come at a better time. I was running into bad audio quality issues and I never realized how much more about that side of things I needed to actually produce at the level I wanted. I figured I might have to get some acoustic foam and build a little booth for myself, but now I figure I really need to learn some audio software to really get things the way I want them. If you have any tips or a video to point to for help with that, that would be great. Anyways, I always like your videos, so keep it up. Looking forward to the next one.
