Re: Gigantism It's known that a lot of the most gigantic animals such as whales actually appear to have a lot of gene duplication. That is to say, there's a lot of redundancy in their genomes, which is a factor in their gigantism. They often also have an higher resistance to catastrophic cancers. It's possible that gigantism in animal specimens in the Fallout universe is a product, not of direct mutation from radiation exposure, but actually a product of selective pressure that produced ionizing radiation resistance with the side effect of gigantism.

I remember hearing a theory about bugs becoming so large in fallout, not because of radiation, but because of increased oxygen in the absence human pollution. This is backed by the fact that Prehistoric Insects were thousands of times larger than modern insects, due to most of the prehistoric world being covered in lush jungles. If they did not become larger, they would die via Oxygen poisoning, and go extinct.

For me is most likely that the mutation was not only by radiation, but with the small amounts of F.E.V on surface, the F.E.V can somehow unlock the ability of Telepathy and Telephatic damage to another being, this will explain in how there's Phsycers on Fallout.

In Nukaworld you can expose yourself to Zeta Radiation and though you have to deal the the radiation sickness and it is SUPER expensive , it raises your characters intelligence through the roof. The mutations in fallout could also be a result of a combination of radiation and different strains of the FEV. I believe in fallout 1 or 2 there is lore you can find that mentioned a stockpile of FEV that was hit with a nuke during the war, so that could definitely be a factor in the size and other mutations.

I love your videos. Normally, I don't comment, because there's nothing really to add. But I did want to point out two things. First is that horses are occasionally mentioned in Fallout games. So, theoretically, they DID survive. But either they are rare (which, as modernized as the Fallout universe was before the Great War, is not surprising given how few horses we have around today compared to, say, cattle) OR perhaps they mutated in an interesting way that just makes them hard to find, such as six-legged super-fast runners with heightened senses, or even stealth-capable like night stalkers. Maybe even a bit of both. Who knows? Second is that the mutations of creatures in Fallout might not be JUST from radiation. Parallels can be drawn between some of the mutations and the FEV that made super mutants. It is not improbable that variants of the FEV strain naturally mutated and jumped species, resulting in some of the wasteland creatures being bigger and badder, like super mutants giving us yao guai, or ... weirdly deformed ... like centaurs giving us radstags and brahmin. Not straight-up FEV animals, but offspring promoting lesser genetic changes from distant FEV-variant infected parents that occurred when the FEV jumped species naturally. For some reason I don't see that theory proposed often, even though it fits the science better than radiation alone. So I like to bring it up when I can. I just wish Bethesda would embrace it a bit better and give us some mutated animals based on sharing traits with floaters. Imagine the weirdness of a floating boar (when pigs fly) or turkey (but they can't fly?) and other such bad puns. Oh the fun that could be had with that. LOL

Just a side note. The theory of Evolution is based on Macro-Evolution, whereas (most of) the evolution in-game is Micro-Evolution. Easy way to remember the difference is Macro allows for changing of species. For Example Fish->Lizard->Squirll->Monkey->Human. That's a 5 species change (it's also an oversimplification but you get the idea). Micro however is more about adapting while ultimately staying the same species. Wolf->Pretty much dog ever. That's 0 species change since all are canines. All the species in-game don't change (except maybe the Super Mutants) Canine are still canine, the bear is a bear, the roach is still a roach. Even ghouls are still homo-sapiens just with a horrible sickness. Macro and Micro CAN go together though and the "fish" would have gone through multiple stages of micro before becoming the "lizard" via macrco.

Bioluminescence is mostly a prey animal trait that's meant to ward off predators, there are a small number of animals like the anglerfish who use bioluminescence as bait, but more often than not it's a form of aposematism. If glowing wasteland creatures are glowing as a result of a mutation and not radioluminescence, this could explain a few things. As a predator, glowing is a trait that would be mostly a hinderence; you're easier to spot to both meals and competition, this makes starving and being killed very likely. Especially at a young age. Many animals depend on their coats blending with their environment. The odds of these creaturea surviving from birth to adulthood while glowing bright is so slim, that the only ones who make it to adulthood would have to be incredibly tenacious and powerful. So the challenge of glowing creatures does lend to the idea they're mutated. However the problem with that is the similarity between glowing creatures and glowing ghouls. From what the game presents, we can assume animals glow for the same reason ghouls do as they both carry irradiated blood. The glowing blood is likely radioluminescent as the iron and sodium in the blood has absorbed intense amounts of radiation. We also know that there is a link between glowing ghouls and proximity to radioactive substances. This lends to the idea that glowing creatures are radioluminescent and like ghouls are probably incapable of breeding or aging. Biologically engineered creatures like the Deathclaw may be an exception, but I believe most wasteland mammals have undergone ghoulification and are incapable of breeding or aging. While insects like the radscorpion or bloatfly have adapted to the radiation. Mutated insects have been shown to be capable of reproducing, however I feel it's likely the glowing variants are incapable of breeding as they also carry irradiated blood

I kinda wish Fallout went with an ongoing war storyline, where the war didn't end with nuclear fire. Instead, nations broke apart into factions such as the Brotherhood and the Enclave did, but the non-stop fighting around the world lead to many groups purposely mutating hostile creatures to destabilize various regions and to make up for the lack of troops in some cases. That, and if there was a manufactured rage virus similar to the Pixie Virus in The Crazies that justified why some people like the raiders or feral ghouls are ridiculously violent. That would make the game's universe somewhat more believable.
