That comment about witcher hurt. I actually enjoyed witcher. I found out about it after having both read the books and played the videogames and the worst thing about it is it's name because it really has nothing to do with witcher (I don't count names of characters, cities, abilities). The game itself even though it has many randomised elements isn't based in luck. It also doesn't have an optimal strategy (which is usually the biggest mistake boardgames make) but rather many possible strategies. It's true that it has very little multiplayer interactions (you can basically play it solo trying to best yourself every time) but it can get really fun if the players are competetive. I wouldn't fear using it as a transition from pc games to board games. Also better alternative for both pc based board games and the dead of winter is this war of mine.

They must have realised themselves how stupid the decision was not to make it purely cooperative. So in the first expansion they integrated some scenarios that were co-op. When people complained why they didn't rework the old scenarios and put them in this expansion, they brought out a mini-expansion that ... well... that you can call a patch. A patch that turns the game into what it was always meant to be. Wandering the wasteland together and having fun/exciting adventures. And now it's enjoyable.

I love fallout and bought the game and it's expansion together to play it solo (one for the few board games that you can play that way). I say I agree with the premise of the review. I played it a few times, and most of those were just to learn how to play. It was okay, not worth the price but if it was on sell and your a fan of the franchise it might be worth a try. I agree if this is going to be your first try at a board game get something else first because it might turn you off for a long time. Why too much randomization, your going to have to adjust the rules and perhaps do away with them entirely to really enjoy the universe and materials in this game. Which would tell you a lot. Get the tabletop and RPG book Fallout Wasteland Warfare and you'll be better off. I plan on combining the two as a sort of randomized RPG.

I managed to have a good time while I was playing but I don't think I was impacted by the rolls and uncontrolled quests as much as Matt and some others are. It slaps you really hard with rules in the first few rounds so we were going super slowly, but once we were figuring it out, it became fun. All 4 of us were saying positive things about it on our first play through. So don't necessarily be afraid of what Matt is saying, because it's possible it won't matter to you as much.

Played this a long while back and we actually manage to win, stupidly. The win conditions are tied to those victory cards for 'factions', so you can only really win with a faction, but the secret cards sometimes stack stupidly or make you switch sides. Long story short, twice someone just flat out went 'uhh, i won' someone else won with him, and then some dude which was 'in the lead' doing quests and stuff ended up now losing. Also, regarding quests, you can be in a corner, doing a little questline for a few good turns, and it gives you NO influence cards, which are the primary resource to win the game. So you're having fun, uselessly. No idea why this is competitive, the entire faction/traitor/whatever mechanic should have just been fucking scrapped. We, like most people, started to figure out house rules to make it work, but it was putting lipstick on a donkey. We would have needed to rewrite a lot of the game rules to make it barely pallatable.

@@FaeDine it really does! The competitive mode is just nonsensical. This expansion breathed life and wonder into the story and actually lets you play the story! I had a neck and neck match with the conga line of enemies as I desperately tried to do an end Game escort mission and literally would have lost the game if it hadn’t worked out in the last turn! It was fantastic. Without this expansion that moment just wouldn’t have been possible

Appreciate the mirror to watch the back. Wish more reviewers did this. It really elevates the whole viewing experience

I also thought it was a nice touch. I don't know if it 'elevates' the viewing experience, but it really opens up the frame.

"Fallout 2 is my favorite game of all time" That alone deserved a like and comment! :)

Indeed! Fallout 2 was quite a step-up in both fun & difficulty challenge from the first one. I did really enjoy the turn based action.

As a competitive game you are right, not very good. But when you play it as a loosely co-op game or even as a single player game it’s a blast.

I got given this as a gift and ironically the most fun I've had with it was as a single player game! The story deck is a really interesting and cool mechanic when you're the only person investigating it, and the luck factor isn't a huge deal when you aren't trying to race other players for VPs. It's like they did a decent job of porting the idea of the (Bethesda) CRPGs to a board game and then buggered it up by trying to add more players.

RadiantSolarWeasel That makes me interested in seeing a solo review of the game. If anyone reading this can find one, link me!

Might pick this one up just to write my own rules. Seems like there's real potential for a good game in there somewhere.

The victory condition is the only part of the game I don't like. I think it's best with 2 players.

It's on brand for modern Fallout that this guy looks like he's about to cry on the thumbnail.

The production values on the game are so top-notch, it's a real shame to see that kind of attention to detail end up in a bad game design.

Simply put, the "production value" of this game is zero, because the game play is as bad and uninteresting as described by SU&SD, and a good game is a prerequisition for any "production value" of a board game. How about the "production value" of a speed boat covered in marble and gold, which does not float? I would argue Food Chain Magnate is the better game then Rising Sun or KD:M. But both games have a higher PV. But this, because they still are good games, I like to play. Only under these circumstance, component quality is to be considered into production value. But if you ask me, if FCM or Zombicide has the higher production value, I'd most certainly would go with FCM. These guys put so much thoughts and effort into creating an unique and interesting gaming experience, that it is high to value for itself. I think, you are calling out production value and component quality as synonyms, which they are not. Publishers need to integrate good gameplay into their production prozess, otherwise their doing is void. I occasionally read some people writing: "This game seems to be bad, but I'm backing it on KS just for the amazing minis. I can never understand, why they won't buy some GI Joe action figures instead, if that's all, what they are interesting in. They are actually cheaper and don't need to "float".

One thing you didn't mention. As a single player board game it works absolutely fine. They just tried to make it multiplayer. Hopefully the recently announced expansion will fix some of that.

Sooo, Single campaign mode is fine but multiplayer server is garbage. :-D

I really regret buying this one. The weird not really co-op aspect is just awful on top of the game not being good otherwise.

Me too, I can enjoy it up to a point but it goes on way too long and in the end no one really cares what happens

Yes, this game and Legendary are ones that I don't like with the semi-coop mechanics. You're working together but still competing?

I was pretty disappointed after I got it on release day. First and last time I'll buy a game without checking out the reviews.

Derek Cutsinger I made the same mistake with Darkest Night. I'll never buy a game again without watch/reading multiple reviews.
