Family Computer Disk System (Famicom Disk System), or simply Disk System, is a peripheral device for Nintendo's Family Computer home video game console, released only in Japan on February 21, 1986. It uses Mitsumi's Quick Disk standard 3-inch floppy disks to store data and adds a new high-quality sound channel.

It has long been known that Nintendo has always wanted and even planned to release a Famicom computer instead of the Famicom console at the beginning of the year. They decided not to do this in 1982 and instead of a 16-bit full-size device with a keyboard and a floppy drive comparable in power to arcade machines, they released an economical 8-bit console.
The average sales of its expansion, released in 1984, with a keyboard, BASIC and the ability to use a tape recorder and cassettes as media, also significantly cooled down their intentions. This also resulted in a cold reception in the USA for their NES computer prototype, which was later downsized to a console again...
However, despite everything, NIntendo in the mid-1980s can be considered a company really open to all ideas, which is certainly confirmed by the release of the Family Computer Disk System set in 1986, which extended the Japanese console with the ability to work with floppy disks.
