Europe somehow got both Ghostbusters II games, and this is definitely the good one. Any game with Flip City on the soundtrack and Louis as a playable character is worth it, though the song on the third level really sounds more like it came from a Kirby game.

While it didn't get a US release, it's one of few games that were released in both Japan and Europe. That probably also helped with its popularity in the US.

This is a fun one. I just wanna add that HAL has been great at releasing the budget-priced titles this late into the Famicom's life. With how insanely overpriced some Fami games have gotten (and there will be MORE in the future,) during the era of the SUPER Famicom it probably made people not want to buy anymore new Fami games... so it's nice that there were cheaper options for new games. ...FOR NOW. HAL fans know what's coming in the future.

Forgot to mention we got the GameBoy port in the US. It has simplified arcade style gameplay and a few changes to the stage and enemy selection, buts it’s based on the same mechanics and uses many of the same sprites. It’s also just as fun❤

this was a fun one to play from start to finish it was challenging enough for me to beat the whole thing after a few attempts and now I'm dreading that aftermarket price for a Famicom copy

update: I bought a cartridge copy for $90 USD which I'd admit is a bit on the high end but worth it in the end for how good this game is

3:42 my ears perked up here because this sounded exactly like the invincibility theme from Kirby. Turns out Jun Ishikawa, Kirby's composer, is actually covering an Oingo Boingo song here. Boy, is pop culture weird some days.

What Oingo Boingo song is that?

@@Unexpectedstuff Flesh 'n Blood, i can just barely hear it myself, but it was someone's comment on this game's OST pointing out that all of the songs were covers of the actual pop soundtrack.

We did get this one in Europe... it wasn't super popular or anything, but it's easily the best Ghostbusters game on the NES/FC. I also really like the 8-bit renditions of songs from the official soundtrack. Good game, all things considered.

At first I thought that the game was an RPG by looking at the sprites on the thumbnail. The game reminds me of Crystalis. 😅

I'll go with a hot take here - while it's pretty good and one of the better Ghostbusters games overall, I think it's nowhere near as great as its current-day reputation suggests. I find the gameplay fun but way too repetitive, sadly. If they added some power-ups, different ghostbusting weapons and expanded the ghost-catching mechanic beyond simple "hold A and press B", this game could've been one of the NES'/Famicom's best. As it stands, it just feels quite undercooked in my eyes.

Great review, don't agree with the closing pop text. If that happened we never would have basically the unofficial 3rd and last Ghostbusters movie, with full cast, but as a game that PS3/PC saw then remastered for HD and put on Switch etc just a few years ago once more. That one is a masterpiece of play, location, and classic snark.

Why didn't we get THIS Ghostbusters 2 game here in the US?! 😫

Activision had the rights and handed it to Imagineering, the development house ironically helmed by David Crane who developed the original Apple 2 version of Ghostbusters. They did... about as well as they usually did (A Boy and His Blob, all those Simpsons platformers).

oh I definitely tried to play this one after I heard Japan got a way better 2nd game than we did! wanna say there was also a game boy conversion but I don't think we got that one either.

I watched the Ghostbusters 2 movie about a year ago, and most of the time it was awful. Horrible pacing and the feeling that the actors would really like to be somewhere else. Finale was the only enjoyable bit in the movie. I have no plans watching the new movies, ever. Ghostbusters is one of those zombie franchises like Jurassic Park, Alien or Terminator that really should be put to grave, the nostalgia has waned off and the avalanche of new crappy installments and media overshadows the good ones
