@@_Y.Not_My comments are based on the financial struggle of American pet owners and the unwanted pet crisis we have here because I didn't realize this story is from Canada. Here the average American lives paycheck to paycheck with little to no savings either due to low income or high debt. Here you cannot compare a child to a dog for two reasons, one being that unlike pets people at the very least have the option for government insurance to cover medical costs, the only insurance available for pets is anything but affordable. The second is here emergency care must be provided regardless of ability to pay. The same is not true for pets, if you can't pay they simply don't get care. Vets do not offer payment plans and unless you have good credit you are not getting a 'care credit' credit card This means you must have all the money in cash up front. Even if the card is approved the amount may still be too low to cover the cost as most people I know have only been approved for a $300-500 credit line which doesn't remotely cover this type of emergency situation which according to one of my clients was around $2,000 a few months ago when it happened to her dog. In fact the majority of emergency hospital vet bills my clients have had were $2,000 or more. According to an article I read 1 in 4 pet owners in Canada can't afford more than $500 out of pocket for an emergency so it seems like Canadian pet owners have the same struggle when faced with expensive vet bills. Based on how few could afford more than $500 I would guess that only 1 in 4 Canadian pet owners could afford $2,000 or more. So although you may not have an unwanted pet crisis and perhaps more finance options most pet owners don't have $2,000 sitting in the bank to cover an emergency vet bill anymore than the average American pet owner does.

Sounds like retaliation from the veterinary hospital. Not wanting to return the ashes is telling. This family took care of their pet for years. If they didn't care about their pet the dog would have been gone years ago. Discarded in the streets or dropped of in a box at an overcapacity shelter. Unfortunately the reality is that pets die every day from illness and part of that is finance related. If they want to prevent this then they should force veterinary clinics to treat ill pets and not turn any treatment down due to financial reasons. If not what is the difference? You have no business reporting someone for neglect when you facilitated the neglect and outcome by refusing to treat the animal. That's like saying an emergency room shouldn't treat you because you can't afford treatment. Bill the person, set up a payment plan, provide affordable procedures. @@josswoman4191 that post does seem contradictory & suspect. Now I wonder if antibotics were offered & they just didn't buy them. Antibiotics would have st least helped control the infection until surgery.

Sometimes you just really want to have a dog and think about saving for emergencies soon as you get them, but sometimes, it is really so costly that it might take a family’s fortune or more costly than a human’s medical care, and you have no choice but to seek help or ask for assistance or just give the utmost care you can give at home. Is it wrong? Maybe, because dogs are a huge responsibility. But imagine if those with hundreds of thousands of dollars were the only ones allowed to have dogs just because they are financially capable… what would happen to all the shelter/abandoned dogs that other less financially-stable people are willing to take care and give love to? No fur parents or owners want their animals to get sick to the point of being critically sick, so this case is just so unfair.

Thats insane and hypocritical of that vet. The vet failed to provide care due to the almighty dollar being more important. They disgust me. Im so sorry for the owners loss. I wish we lived in a more humane world where vets didnt guilt trip owners into paying thousands for simple tests etc. The world has turned into pure greed.

It’s very sad that this happened but if the dog had been spayed, it wouldn’t have gotten pyometra.

That shouldn't have happened. Unfortunately with pyometra it's a touch and go. What they did into neglect, but other options should have been given to the family.

lololol just when I think Canada can't get any more pathetic/dystopian. I'm a huge dog person but this story is so wild I don't even know where to start. And let's just say a fine is warranted(it isn't), $1300 is INSANE.

What do you think the penalty should be for animal neglect that causes a dog to suffer for weeks and ultimately die?
@kurtbaldwin6984
Ай бұрын
@@zammmerjammer Honestly I would need more information to say whether or not this constitutes animal neglect. I can understand if the vet said "Okay, well if you can't afford the treatment you should let us put the dog down now, to avoid unnecessary suffering". In that case if the man disregarded that advice and took his dog home to suffer and die, I would say it's a pretty clear cut case of animal abuse, $250 fine where I'm from. But this story feels like it's more of a "Well, if you don't have that kind of money you shouldn't own a dog" scenario, which, if you think that, don't even bother responding because we're miles apart in our thinking lol.

@@kurtbaldwin6984the vet said they needed to run tests and we couldn’t afford it, never offered any other options otherwise we would’ve taken them! We tried to surrender her and nobody would take her and someone reached out to us and stopped answering us, we truly did try everything, she died 12 hours before her appointment to see if she was savable.

@@kurtbaldwin6984also, the dog was dropped off to us 3 years ago, and the owner would tell us he’s coming to get her and never would.
