Best part about shed to house living is that as kids age you can simply add another shed and boom, ya got a bedroom. Sounds crazy, but a friend of mine had one (as a teen) and it was the greatest. Honestly it's probably the reason why I went tiny living. Cheers!

The average new build in NZ is currently 155sqm (1660sqft) but historically it was smaller; in the '50s, 1000sqft was common. And NZ houses are usually one-storey so that's the entire floor space. I don't think you can compare NZ housing to the US, Canada, Australia, etc. Speaking as someone with friends and family from each of those countries.

@robertb4455

They could ad another "wing" to the house with a second shed or structure. It could include bedrooms, a third or even a 4th bath, and a room that the kids could hang out in , kind of like a rumpus room or play room. I do wonder how many more years their children will be able to go without a tv? Just watching KZitem and some documentaries on streaming services could make a basic 42" HD TV worthwhile to mount in the kids activity/ schoolroom. I know you can do some if not all on a laptop but if you have only 2 or 3 laptops, a TV could be a better option to view certain things. I do like ability to build things with few or no building codes in Texas, but I doubt I could deal with more than a few days over 100 degrees. I do not know if their part of Texas sees very many tornadoes, but that would be an issue without having a building attached to a foundation with some hurricane strapping.
@ZeoCyberG
4 жыл бұрын
@@robertb4455 Tornadoes can reach much higher pressures and wind speeds than Hurricanes. So if that's a issue then they would need a lot more than hurricane strappings. More like a underground storm shelter or bomb proof concrete and/or steel panic room. If you can afford an ICF/concrete constructed home then it can probably handle up to around 250 MPH winds. But an F-5 means up to 261-318 mph winds and it can theoretically reach an F-6 for even higher wind speeds. So take tornado proof home with a grain of salt, along with how expensive they can be and why most just build a shelter and have insurance to make rebuilding easier...

They mention here that the local area did not have any building code restrictions. That is uncommon. Mostly anywhere in the US a shed cannot be legally permitted for living quarters because it's not built according to codes. Some places may be an exception & allow it to be brought up to code. In most places there must first be a legally permitted primary house before a shed can be placed. Usually the shed will still need a permit but it's just uncommon to get a permit for converting a shed to a house. On 7 acres in a secluded area you may just get away with it so long as no one reports it. Many people would love to do this, just buy cheap land and an inexpensive shed to live in, but the reality unfortunately is that most places in the US it can't be done legally.

We had it a bit easier than you, in the last move, since we had built up some equity by building our first 3 homes, then purchased a foreclosure on 8 acres. (And the kids are grown.) It is such a wonderful feeling. There was a recent news clip about how credit card companies call us dead beats because we pay the bill in full each month. Most definitely it’s better for both kids and adults to live in a place where it’s in the country! We insisted on raising our four kids in the country and I feel that was the best thing for them! The only thing I’d change is I wish I could have homeschooled them because that’s where the negative influences came from.

i am kind of confused why are they treating the space under the bed like a big deal? Like isnt that a standard in every home? Obviously there is room under the bed for storage. I feel I've never actually seen a bed that isnt just a frame or a square with some spring mechanism to open an put stuff under.

Every inch counts. By doing it their way, they have 17 inches in height. That is way more space than normal beds have. If they had a box springs on there, it would drop the space down from the 17 inches they have now minus the depth of the box springs, which doesn't leave much space at all.

@@janicewilliams2194 Saying "normal" beds is missleading. Here in Germany Boxspring-beds are not common at all.There are lots of different kind of beds out in the world. And i've always had beds with storage underneath. My current bed has 15 inches of storage hight (yes i just messured) but it is only so low because i have short legs and decided on a lower version. And it is an enclosed box, with a mechanism where you can lift up the matress to get underneath and no one sees my chaos in there :D

Seriously, beds that are high enough to fit a storage bin are standard dormitory fare, so I'm not sure why it's an OMG moment. I have the exact same bed frame, bought at Walmart. It's nothing special at all.

Beautiful design! Two of our children are raising their families in Austin, Texas. They moved there from upstate, NY... I wish I could just find a patch of grass to plant a nice shed/garage and park a used truck and small camper in it... just to visit and be near... God bless you and enjoy your beautiful life! ~ Maria

What would be the difference in cost between a gently used 'newer' mobile home and the cost of improving a shed?

The shed itself is usually pretty cheap. Even a large one is less than $10,000. Then converting it would depend on the individual. Depending on skill level and how you want it to look once you're done.

meh. that's subjective. you find ways to cost down costs if you're handy ie you do the labor yourself. I don't think it really cost as much as y'all are hoping it costs. You're also missing the obvious fact they likely would have used the money they got when they sold their house. When the kids get older they'll obviously have to renovate or move again but right now they seem comfortable.

I'm going to connect for home use but just like you I'm using it for my garden. I am connected to electric. I'm on blocks also and feel the same way that I would prefer a more solid foundation

I thought the same! If you're about to change your lifestyle, habits, and want to be more "eco-friendly", why moving to an area like Texas? They say the electricity is cheap. But cheap doesn't mean it has less environmental costs... btw permaculture is not only about growing food, it's about making the environment resilient... and demography is the 3rd point that mollisson talks in his book: to diminish the pressure on the ecosystems... they probably had kids before thinking about perma, but still, it is worth mentionning it.

It love to see couples with their children on their own land, educating their own children and becoming financially free by their own productivity. Going to public schools is more like indoctrination than it is about “education”. Bless this family, and I wish them well

With seven undeveloped acres and no building codes, why not create an appropriately sized tiny house community. Start by leasing land to those with their own THoW's. Then build-out "park" models from shed structures. Talk about multiple income streams and monetizing your property!

@@irenefindlay5683 yes, same with us, we had 5 kids and mom and dad with one SMALL bathroom for many years, and I have heard of others with larger familes (7 kids, and aunts and grandma's who also lived with them - Italian), AND their 'bathroom' was in a separate 'outhouse' building in the back yard. It was not an actual outhouse with a huge pit dug into the ground - it had running water, but was just not located inside the house. and it was also in city limits, not in the country. (yes, some years back, but not that long)
