Wow Great kit as always andrew...If you are looking for material for a video I have an Idea for you, I have heard few people talk about servival and clothing, like really big monkey 1, metioning that he carries extra clothes to sleep in and an extra set of clothes with him when he goes out in the bush depending on how long he's going to be out in case there is a down pour and he gets wet,or the length of time he is out he has to change for other reasons...now you probably didn't have the luxury of "jammies"...lol when in the field doing your job, but I would like to know your feelings on extra clothes and possibly something to sleep in, as a discussion based on your feelings about it, have you ever utilized spare clothe s or sleep wear?, do you think their is merit in it? basically your opinion and expericence would be welcomce since, the topic that was discussed peaked my interest....:) lol....And since most of your subscribers are pretty nice any of them are welcome to chime in on this comment also....still love ya andrew....always a fan.

For the outside pocket, fuel tabs would be good, as Mr. Wolf said, plus you could add a bottle of water purification tablets or a bottle of iodine. It is big enough I believe to put the drum liner in or the knife and multi tool thus giving more room in the bottle for something else. As I watched I was thinking that instead of using the plastic bottle to get water, use the metal container to gather and boil it, then once it cools enough transfer that water to the clean plastic bottle. That way you could still use the metal bottle to sterilize more water giving you two. The bandanas could hold everything else until one of the containers is emptied. Just my opinion. Neither right or wrong.

Yes and no. The problem with filter (straw, Sawyer etc) is freezing. If the filter froze the filtering capabilities are 0. And you have no way to know it. Therefore it is dangerous to keep a water filter in a pack that will stay at outside temperature days and night summer to winter (in a car etc). This is the cas when purification tablets are better. Filter are wonderful when hiking as you take care of it. It is a survival « no no »

I like the contents of this kit more than some I have seen, but I see the same major problem I have been barking against for years. 2 problems, actually. first, if you put the contents of your kit in the water bottle, then you do not have water right away if needed, and will have to start right off purifying what ever you find. second, as soon as you start to purify water, where do you carry the gear? I have put together several kits with similar contents but I add a small molle pouch to the outside of the bottle bag for the gear, and when I go into the woods, my bottle starts off topped off with clean water. also, for most of my kites like this, I have a separate small molle pouch on the other side with a decently stocked booboo kit. even with some of the more advanced items I keep in mine I know it falls short of a trauma kit, but it does allow for a lot more function.
@RangerSurvivalandFieldCraft
3 жыл бұрын
It's a 911 kit so not meant to start off with water, but a good point. The contents fit in the pouch or in one of the spare quart size bags. The dry weight of the kit fits in a 10oz (dry weight, {#2.5 can}) can which has the liquid volume of ~32oz. Volume of a cylinder is V = πr2h, so when I packed the kit I did some math on the volume to determine if the kit could fit into a smaller plastic bag. The bottle is 40oz so we have nearly 8oz of overflow for a quart size bag. When we cross load some items like the multitool, lighter, mirror, whistle, headlamp, bandana, etc. into our pockets, I find that the remaining items fit perfectly into a quart size bag which is why I include two and we can take that and put it in the pouch or in our cargo pocket.

If you can find a copy of it. Outdoor Life published a book called The Complete Book of Camping. In this book they had what they called a get lost kit. That book and that kit (as best as I could put it together at 13) along with my Boy Scout Handbook was what I used for many years in the woods. Might be worth checking out. I have put together water bottle kits, in Nalgene bottles, that I have cached in several places I frequent. Lost my Mora Carbon Companion while out practicing with one of these kits in a similar carrier. Should have attached to the carrier a little better, maybe some Gorilla Tape or ranger bands around the clip after attaching it to the molle webbing, instead of the parachute cord that apparently came untied.

additions you need. Wet stone for sharping your knives. As for tape I use zip ties to hang rolls of tape from the Molle attachment points on my packs and kits. I also hook those paracord bracelets to them. I would suggest some coffee filters to help strain your water before treating it. Also those hate bottle clips are great to carry empty liter bottles . You can transfer your good water into one so you can use your single wall metal container to boil water. I would also add some zip ties to a kit like that.

Good question! Answer One of the plastic bags. The volume of the container is about 8oz larger than the dry weight of the kit which comes in at ~32oz or the equivalent of a number 2.5 can. The volume of the cylinder = πr2h, so taking into account the items we place in our pockets; such as, leatherman, map, lighter, cordage, whistle, map, compass, headlamp, we can place the remainder in the plastic bag in a cargo pocket while we boil water and transport it. The items in our pockets make up roughly 8oz of dry goods as it pertains to volume of a container.

I’d recommend a Mora Companion HD or a Mora Bushcraft Black. I have both, for years now, and use them constantly. Both are carbon steel and a full scandi grind. Easy to sharpen and they can both strike sparks off the spine with a hard rock. The companion doesn’t have a 90 degree spine, but can be filed down to achieve this in order to strike a ferro rod. Neither are full tang only rat tail which requires better technique compared to overall brute force with a full tang knife. Skill with a mora outweighs force with a full tang knife. Either of those are good options. The sheaths are basic plastic, but can be modified to wrap pats order around along with a ferro or small fire kit to make them an enhanced survival tool. If price is sensitive a Mora 511 is still a good knife. If price is flexible a Mora Garberg is the one I would recommend most. It is full tang, 90 degree spine, carbon steel and comes with a good leather sheath. I would recommend any of these due to price constraints.
