Separate them and leave them that way for several weeks. It will heal on its own. You could put salt or sugar on it and then try pushing it back in but most of the time they push it back out.

Does this happen to all sows, and what are some causes of that? How does the pig poop when it's rectum is prolapsed like that?

Carla Head it doesn’t happen to all sows. It’s a bad trait that you should cull for. It can happen for multiple reasons. You can look at her and tell she had some health issues to begin with and that exacerbated the issue. She was a great mom which isn’t easy to find but she would also throw piglets that would prolapse. They can still poop but I’m guessing it’s painful.

I'm having the same problem with a red wattle sow. How long would you say that it took for the prolapse to go back in?
@@HomesteadingAcademy was your sow pregnant when she has a prolapse?

@@srdoming84 she was not. She had gotten thin buts that is it. She also had a history of throwing piglets that would do the same thing.

Why is she bleeding so much?

Carla Head she didn’t bleed out and after a few weeks she was fine. Believe it or not most vets don’t know how to work on this type of issue. We have numerous horse vets around our way but most of them have no experience with this. I have even had vets ask me about castrating pigs. She is bleeding for numerous reasons. The rectum is very easy to puncture which is why you need to separate them quickly. She already had a hole in it when I found her. Gloves would have been nice but you get used to having your hands in all sorts of stuff when you farm.

Please call a vet and let them do it-don't let her bleed out.
