You’re treating this as rumor, but the owner said in the press conference yesterday that they are renovating the Delta Center, using “new technology” (removing beams and stuff I think) to make it a good experience for both sports. Ryan Smith (the owner) was asked like 5 different questions about the arena and he said every time that they aren’t building new they want to renovate the existing Delta Center because they like its location downtown. The mayor was there and confirmed the plans and Garry Beckman was there and said on camera that he saw the plans and thinks it will be a great NHL arena once it’s renovated. He also confirmed the Jazz (the basketball team) will continue to play there and even stated that this renovation will also improve the experience for basketball too.

My opinion is Smith feels the pressure to appease the State and Salt Lake city in keeping them downtown. Just because they say they can renovate the Delta center to configure a better hockey arena does not mean that is a solution and 17k will become very obsolete in a short period of time. I hope Smith uses his own common sense in this decision and not be arm twisted into a short term solution just because a bunch of bureaucrats want them in downtown Salt Lake and within 5 years we are back to needing a new arena. That is what will happen.

Josh, I agree that Metropolitan SLC will support hockey very well, despite being much smaller than Metropolitan Phoenix. My adult son lived there a few years and played in several beer leagues, so it’s clear SLC likes hockey. I also agree that Delta Center is not a good long term hockey arena. Ryan Smith and the franchise owners will either need to build a new, longer arena which can hold a hockey rink and at least 18,000 seats, or tear out one end of Delta Center to make it long enough to do the same. I really don’t know which is a better economic answer. That depends on land and infrastructure costs of building new versus the MAJOR rehab needed on Delta Center. Delta Center at least has all the infrastructure already in place. Seattle did an over-the-top renovation of Key Center, becoming Climate Pledge Arena, by raising the roof and lowering the lower bowl. I’ll bet it would have been cheaper to build a new arena from scratch, but there was a lot of politics and a lot of “preservationalists” wanting to breathe new life into a historic arena (which dated back to the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle).

Rogers Centre was changing the arrangement of seats and going lower into the ground for a better view. What would have to happen at the Delta Center is different. It's an operation of adding space, they'd have to go deep into the ground to make the lower bowl wider and it may affect the upper bowl too. To took Seattle two years to do this recently and same the thing with Portland back in the 90s. I 100% believe it will end up being a new stadium. Edit: they might play at the maverick center during renovations

People are making a bigger deal out of this than it actually is. Is the current arena configuration for Hockey ideal? No. But the Delta Center is still a huge step up from a 5000 seat college rink, lmao. Ryan Smith explained in the press conference yesterday that they've decided to renovate the Delta Center instead of building a new arena, because lawmakers made it clear to him that they don't want either team to play outside of Downtown (and there's simply nowhere to build a new arena in Downtown.) It will also allow more money to go to everything else, like player housing and other development around the arena

If you would’ve watched the press conference yesterday, you would know that they are not building a new arena. They want to keep have the NBA and NHL downtown and there is not land to do that. The plan is to do a MAJOR renovation of the current arena. The exterior of the building is also going to be completely redone and extended. The new entrance to the building will face east. It won’t even look recognizable. The renderings that were released a few weeks ago are indeed the current Delta center. They haven’t released the full plans yet, but I speculate that the upper bowl will be left in place while the lower bowl will be completely blown out and expanded underneath the lower bowl … it could actually end up being a very unique arena. That’s very good for both hockey and basketball. The lower bowl is completely below grade so this is definitely possible. I think what we’re going to end up with is a lower bowl that’s a completely different shapes than the upper bowl.

@@mattreedah That’s correct. A lot of people spewing BS fail to realize that when you put a 200 foot long hockey rink into a basketball designed arena, the entire upper bowl behind the goal is useless, because you CAN’T SEE THE GOAL BENEATH YOU!! I live in San Antonio. The Frost Bank (formerly AT&T) Center was built for the SA Spurs. We also had an AHL Hockey team, the Rampage. For Spurs games, it held over 18,000. For Rampage games, they collapsed the entire lower bowl behind the west goal, and didn’t sell seats in the upper bowl behind the west goal. In that configuration, seating was about 12,500. Perfectly fine for minor league hockey, but not for NHL. Without a MAJOR re-construction of the Delta Center, it will have the same problem Phoenix had with America West Arena where the Coyotes first played. There probably is pressure to get as many seats since hockey depends on arena attendance more so than other pro sports. They may want to have 2 arenas available for the Winter Olympics.

Earth to Phil. Renovations don’t cost much. So it doesn’t matter if they renovate Delta Center while the New Arena is being built. For example the Rams renovated the LA Coliseum while Sofi Stadium was being built.

They’ve got their work cut out as far as a renovation goes. I thought they had $900 million or some ungodly sum hoisted from the public for a new arena already? You can get an arena built in 24 months without having to pay premiums for materials. Anything short of that, the costs goes skyward. But 900 million?? Just put the shovels in the ground and design it while they’re building the foundation. Sheesh

Smith is being pressured and arm twisted by bureaucrats with short term goals in keeping them in downtown SLC. The only long term solution is to demo the Delta center and rebuild. A reconfigured expensive make over to just get 17k hockey seats will not be a long term solution and we will be right back to we need a new stadium. Hate to see the Delta Center go but in the end if keeping both teams downtown is the goal, it is the only way.

That's similar to how it was here in San Antonio when we had the AHL team here. One end basically had no seats.
@OldRustySteele
27 күн бұрын
Correct. They simply collapsed the seats behind the west end goal, and didn’t sell seats in the upper west end bowl. This resulted in about 12,000-13,000 good seats for hockey. Which is fine for AHL hockey. This is exactly the same problem that the Coyotes had when Winnipeg 1.0 moved to Phoenix. America West Arena in downtown Phoenix was built for Suns basketball, not hockey. Frustratingly, Toyota Center in downtown Houston is already perfectly suited for NHL hockey. It was built to be compatible for hockey right from the get-go, and holds over 17,500 for hockey. I THOUGHT the main reason Bettman approved the move to SLC was because they promised a new hockey-compatible arena would be built in SLC. Looks like Ryan Smith and SLC are already reneging on that promise!!! 🤮

Utah Hockey Club sounds like a good permanent name. All of these other names are just copies of other places or weird. You can use Utah Hockey Club as the name of the team and have a mascot of something like a Yeti (Whatever a Yeti is) or some other creature.

The Delta Center should do a complete renovation to better accommodate the new NHL Utah team. The Jazz hopefully will agree to make something happen now that it has a new indoor neighbor. I'm guessing that if there will be a renovation, it'll cost about (I'll just throw out a random number) $500M. I could be wrong and it may cost more than that. If I'm wrong, do share your opinions peeps.

If they wanted a more viable arena there are other cities that should have been considered to relocate the Coyotes to and then go to Salt Lake City as an expansion after a proper arena is built. It is stupid that for Canada there are insane requirements to get a team and in the US there are virtually none other then the money.

The answer to your question is that if Smith keeps them in downtown Salt Lake and decides renovating the Delta center doesn't really work, it will be demolished and a new arena built in its place. That is probably the best solution. Either way, if renovating or demo and rebuild happens, neither the Jazz or hockey will be playing there for at least 2 yrs. I don't see how the Maverick center does not be used for hockey and the Jazz playing at the University of Utah, which they have done before. Don't know where you got 18+k for basketball but I believe for basketball the number is around 20.7k.

Be easier probably but costs more money Ryan Smith has money build new arena in same location or near by make it for both sports like so many do. Play in Delta Center till new stadium ready. This reminds me of Barclay's in Brooklyn was liker that for hockey and failed for Islanders not saying happen here. Can do minor stuff to adjust for it if can't get new arena build quickly

Ryan Smith said at his presser that they plan to renovate and *NOT* build a new arena. He seemed pretty adamant about that and wanted to focus more on the neighborhood around the arena. He seemed to not be concerned at all about renovating versus building a totally new building because the new arena site would not be in the downtown area where he wants to keep the arena for both the Jazz/hockey team AND the Olympics, should they win that bid.
@ckstaff
27 күн бұрын
I believe Smith knows better than that and renovating the Delta center will not work long term.. He has to appease or feels obligated to appease a bunch of bureaucrats that only care he stay in Salt Lake city. We need a new arena and that is the reality. 17k will not cut it and we all know it. If he feels they should stay in downtown Salt Lake the long term solution is to just demo the Delta center and rebuild.
