I dont think Pagan in a Main Antagonist. He never is hostile and doesnt really oppose Ajay directly. Pagan even gives Ajay the freedom to do as he pleases unlike the golden path. Sabal is using him as the son of Mohan to fulfill his selfish view of Kyrat while Amita uses him to conquer the whole Kyrat. Ajay even said to Amita; "Who else pulls the trigger around here?".

@@TheIrland09 Because Ajay is attacking them, they're simply defending territory that belongs to them, Ajay is the one trying to claim their territory for the Golden Path. "Stop the bus, not shoot the bus. I'm very particular with my words, Stop, Shoot, Stop, Shoot. Do those words sound the same?" "But it got out of control" Pagan's soldiers were doing whatever they wanted from the very beginning, even when Pagan gave them very specific orders.

Mohan Ghale was originally a recruit for the royal army. He fought along side Pegan Min until Pegan betrayed the heir once the army had seized the palace. This betrayal took place in Kartik in 1987. Kartik is what I presume a northern city of Kirat. This was planned so Pegan could occupy himself as king over the land of Kirat. In a state of emergency, Mohan and the rest of the Rebels of the once royal army flee and hide. Mohan and the rebels' thirst for revenge on Pegan and his guard and in their state of emergency create the newly made army known as the Golden Path. Mohan Ghale marries Ishwari. Ishwari becomes pregnant with Ajay. Once Ajay is born Ishwari leaves Mohan to go have an affair with Pegan. This makes Mohan madder than ever and he swears revenge on the two of them. Ishwari has another child with Pegan. This child is killed by Mohan along with Ishwari. That is where the Golden Path became to be so if you want to blame some one for starting the golden path, blame Pegan Min.

Pagan Min is by no means a good guy, he even admits that the terrible stuff that he did wasn't for any noble cause but for his own selfish pleasure. He is however the only one who admits his faults which sharply contrasts to his 'counterparts' in the Golden Path. Amita and Sabal attempt to bury their crimes behind the vague idea of a greater good and their predecessor Mohan tried to justify his killing of Lakshama and the subsequent breakdown of negations and possible peace in his personal journals, avoiding responsibility and attempting to divert it onto others. Compared to the slaving drug lord, the religious nut job, and the baby killing hypocrite it's not hard to see Pagan Min as a good guy despite his own monstrous deeds.

Both Golden path leaders think that they are doing what's best for Kyrat, but they ultimately just do whatever they want to the country. Not because they are crazy, but because they both have a tunnel vision and don't think things thoroughly. Pagan in the other hand does not try to justify his actions just like you said. He admits in the good end that he used the death of his daughter as excuse for his actions, but later realized that he was doing it all for his own selfish gain. The difference between Pagan Min, and Golden path leaders is ultimate honesty both to oneself and to others. When it comes to Ajay, we as players can see the big picture, if we try hard enough but most likely just got tempted to do few good deeds with wrong people and ended up ignoring his mother's final wish. "To believe in something greater than yourself, is to find Shangri La". To me, Shangri-La are the civilians of Kyrat. Ajay is only know who is actually helping them, but with the Golden path they just suffer more in the end. I'd like to think Far Cry 4 as cautionary tale about trying to find your calling and greater purpose, but losing your soul in the progress.

You know it's funny, cause sometimes when I watch video's about Far cry 4, some people offer the idea of: "oh, if everyone's a bad guy, just kill ALL of them! Then Ajay can rule Kyrat himself and fix everything!" And..really? That's supposed to be the solution? I mean, don't get me wrong, Amita, Sabal, Pagan, all of them are bad in some way. But trying to just, get rid of ALL of them doesn't really work. Like mister Ryan stated, Ajay's lived in America for most of his life, and doesn't know that much about his home culture. Let alone running a country. How is he supposed to be able to bring back Kyrat from the state it's in? He doesn't have ANY kind of leadership experience, in fact, he's usually taking orders from someone else most of the time. I mean, yeah Pagan seems to think he'd do just fine but..it's Pagan. He hardly had control of his own army. I'm willing to bet if Ajay did gain control of Kyrat, it probably would've just led to the same result. The 'leader' retreats to his own personal hideaway while his 'lackeys' are the ones that hold the real power. The ones making things happen. Hell, I have half a mind to believe Amita and/or Sabal probably would've swooped RIGHT in once it happened and tried to take control themselves. Amita offering him 'counsel' to help govern Kyrat and Sabal offering 'advice' on what his father would've done. Then the country would've been torn apart by their competing visions anyway, thus leading to internal fighting, with the common people being the ones who suffer most. Probably leading to ANOTHER rebellion seeking to remove Ajay from power, and at that point, the cycle could probably go on forever. And, let's not forget that Ajay isn't exactly a saint either. Yeah, he tries to do the right thing a lot, and you can tell he at least does care about the people of Kyrat from the various side missions you can do, but the way he goes about it is by: assassinating multiple people, killing an UNGODLY amount of Royal army solders, who, let's not forget are still people with families too. That's what De Plur was meant to remind us of. And, at least game-wise: is THE direct cause of Amita or Sabal rising to power. They wouldn't have been able to overthrow Pagan without him running around everywhere doing their dirty work. He blindly follows their orders just..because. Never questioning them, never trying to offer a compromise whenever they disagree, he probably could've asserted himself as the de-facto leader of the golden path under the right of his birth if he wanted to, based on how people treat him because of that, but he never does. Though, I admit, he's probably one of the more 'morally sound' characters in the story. I just find it interestingly ironic how, the one character who's the least morally corrupt in this story, might also just be the one with THE most blood on his hands. And, really, isn't that just fitting for a game like this? Where there's no real good sides, just a bunch of different people trying to kill eachother? I mean it says a lot that the most sympathetic characters I can think of in this game are an arms dealer priest that used to be a warlord that survived a shot to the brain and is most likely insane. A radio station host who tries to peacefully turn people away from Pagan by spreading the truth, yet openly states he supports AMITA, a character similar to Pagan and has some..odd habits. One of Pagan's top enforcers who's only following him to keep her family safe, that also hosts the shanath arena, a place glorifying death and violence, where people bet money on who lives and dies. And two coked up crackheads that, are just stuck in Kyrat and have no way to get out of it, that also use Ajay as their guniea pig to test out their concoctions, squat on his property, and even kidnap him and send him off too said arena to most likely DIE in. This is why I personally think Farcry 4, despite it's problems, does still hold up even to the success of Farcry 3. It tells just as interesting a story, you just have to look a little harder to find it. Farcry 3 was about how killing could corrupt a single man, Farcry 4, was about how killing could corrupt a nation. And a detail I love about the ending, is how it almost DIRECTLY references three as well. Pagan mentions that the ashes of Ajay's mother, the thing that represents the 'old Ajay' was his excuse for all this. His way of justifying everything he's done so far to get to this point. He even says, quote: 'god damm if it isn't fun.' cause..he's done it too. He used Lakshmana's death, his own child, as an excuse to take over the country of Kyrat for his own..just like how Mohan used Ishiwari's affair with Pagan, to justify killing his own step-daughter....and like how Jason, the protagonist of Farcry 3, used his brother Grant's death to justify murdering to avenge him, when really it's just his power fantasy. If you think about it, Farcry is pretty much the one video game franchise that really shows you why killing is such a bad thing. Compared to most games, even other realistic FPS's, kind of just brush it off for the sake of fun. Makes it all the more sad to see the current state of the franchise in 5 and 'new dawn' where they pretty drop that angle and all bigger interesting story for...the sake of gameplay? I don't know, I haven't played through Farcry 6 yet but, from what I can tell, it's just more of the same. Not to say I hate it, don't even think it's bad. I just wish Ubisoft wasn't afraid to make us feel morally compromised like this anymore. I played through new dawn myself and, from a purely gameplay perspective, I think it's great!..but, I could replace it with pretty much any other apocalyptic shooter out there and have a similar amount of fun. Hell, FALLOUT is the more interesting game about a similar concept to me, and it's an RPG wearing an FPS's outfit for god's sake! 3 and 4 though? They were more than JUST fun 'shooty-shooty bang bang.' They had depth, weren't afraid to tell you the real truth about what you were doing, the situation you were in, and why, if this was something that actually happened in real life? It'd be awful..and I really respect that. They had the best of both worlds. Anyway, enough of my overly long ted-talk TL;DR: Farcry 4 has no perfect, or even right answers and I respect it for being realistic about that.

The discussion of Tiger and Elephant is symbolic between Golden Path and Pagan Min. In King Min's Kyrat, it says that the Elephant is big and glorious like Pagan Min. If that is true, then Pagan Min was provoked by Golden Path (as he tells Ajay) and then attacks Golden Path with his Army and Guards, who protects their territories. Golden Path is the Tiger, who goes for any Royalists they can find, to attack them as their prey, because they want to attack so they think they can survive. However Amita and Sabal is described as the "Two-headed Elephant" in King Min's Kyrat.

Yeah, it kind of bothered me how you're only given the illusion of a choice, and how the true nature of Sabal and Amita are only discovered in their post-game encounters. Well, you do see a vision of what they'll become, but in previous Far Cry games, such hallucinations have been "unreliable narrators" and we didn't know if what we were seeing was really a vision of events to come, or something imaginary (like Ajay turning into a Yeti). I would have preferred it if more definite hints about these 2 characters' dark motivations and intentions were revealed in the game itself well ahead of time, so that it could guide our decision in a more accurate way.

I've been working on an analysis of Pagan Min for the last 3 months and you just gave me new interesting perspectives that actually are reinforced by the Far Cry 6 DLC of Pagan Min and his perspective of the Kyrat situation :) Although, I wouldn't argue that Pagan Min's character is good by any metrics, but he is a lot better than Amita or Sabal as Pagan murdered the child King to gain his position as the King of Kyrat. Regardless, wonderful video! and thank you for furthering and inspiring introspection
