Great video as always, Sam! I got some tips for you and other creators! WINDOW LIGHTS Here's a super good tip for making urban maps set at NIGHT: When you're using generic solid buildings, fill some windows with a Fake Sky lighting effect, set just in front of the window pane. This will bring so much more life into a nighttime city and make buildings feel lived in instead of dark and dead. Sometimes this effect is too bright however, but you can customize the colors in the object properties to fit they style of light and brightness you want. The lowest values for each color provide dimmer, more realistic lights. The cool thing is that these don't use up much effects budget... but if you're feeling bold or making a smaller town, you can add dim omnilights behind the windows to shine into the streets or alleys to prevent those Fake Sky effects from looking alien or separate from the world. This is what I did for my own Clean House level, as a lot of the buildings were lit up and it gave a contrast to the much darker target building. IMMERSIVE AUDIO One more effect you can add to this is a Crowd Quiet Loop audio effect set at the proper distance if you'd like players to hear a bunch of talking coming from a closed off building, but it's purely a background detail. That's all I have for urban tips, BUT I do have some more general mapmaking tips that should make your maps at least twice as beautiful if used properly! EFFECT COLORS Another tip for making maps in general is to make sure any mist, water dripping, smoke, or dust effects don't stick out too much. For most of these, you can go into the object properties and customize the colors here too! Values for RGB are set at 255 by default but for something like water drop effects, that can feel a bit too bright for some situations. I lower dripping water to about 150 on each color, and that will give them a more clear grey look as opposed to being bright white drops. Same thing with overly grey smoke or dust particle effects. Just don't go too dark or the effects can turn an ugly black, unless that's what you're going for. AMBIENT LIGHT I have one more tip, but this is for advanced users: Light is not pure in contrast. If sunlight shines into a cave or a building, it doesn't just sit there. In real life, light reflects, its bounces, and the sun can illuminate things that can't see it directly. This is why ray-traced lighting and global illumination in games look so good, because it introduces proper light and shadow. The arcade editor doesn't support this, and instead the daytime world is illuminated by a blue-ish glow to simulate the blue from the sky, but that's all. With the proper color set, you can change how the world's ambient light bounce looks. Sure, the sky may be blue, but urban settings are a grey color, jungles are green, and deserts are orange. The shadows in your world are blocked from the sun, but even the darker areas should reflect more of the colors that the sun DOES reach. Setting the blue at a lower value and putting red or green higher will help to create the illusion that light from other natural sources is illuminating the world aside from a sun or blue sky that isn't there as much as the default color would imply. This also works for nighttime if it's overly blue. At night, go into the ambient light bounce settings, remove blue and add more red and green to get a grey effect, as the nighttime is much more desaturated in real life. REALISTIC SECONDARY LIGHTING (AKA my secret technique c;) Additionally, and here's something I discovered for myself, you can use dim spotlights and omnilights in order to make specific spots of light bounce realistically, like the aforementioned sunlight in a cave. You'll want to use an artificial light the color of the lit surface to simulate secondary light, placed just behind or just in front of the area that's lit. If the sun shines on a red colored wall, you'll want to make it reflect red light. You can use a blue spotlight to simulate the blue sky shining down or into a closed off area like a cave or courtyard, depending on what color the sky is. Making the spotlight's angle higher, or using multiple lights will create softer shadows for this effect as well. You don't want to use a light that creates sharp shadows if the light source is wide like the sky is. Same thing for the areas lit by indirect sunlight. WARNING Both these effects can destroy your budget and memory however, and cause issues such as shadows not rendering or light leaking through walls, so be conservative with your level design when using these. I recommend using the secondary light technique in small or linear maps only, as they're easier to manage. I actually never see these advanced effects when playing other people's maps, and I wish more would take notice. I just now decided to share the methods I use in my own creations like Clean House and the map below! EXAMPLE Here's an example of a cloudy/rainy map where I use these, combined with other secret lighting and shading techniques pretty effectively just to show how realistic you can make your maps look: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tG2EyaSQgJhefGU

Glad I could help out then! I know lighting is very important to the feel of a map, and such complex creations can unfortunately be washed out by generic plain lighting. I see it happen more than it should.

A good video as usual! I must admit, I don't add things like decals as much as I should to my maps even though I probably should. The tip about replicating decorated sidewalks is something I could try. I've done that for different things, but I never thought to do it with sidewalks. Some other tips I could add (not all are strictly urban related): - For the roads, you can use the yellow or white terrain decals found under Nature > Terrain Decals (I normally type yellow or white into the search box to easier find the decal I want) to add your own road lines. Though some roads have road lines already (highway specifically comes to mind), the roads are often too narrow as Sam mentioned in the video, even at their widest widths. By adding your own road lines you can make roads as wide and with as many lanes as you want. It can be tedious and put several annoying decal icons on your screen, but it's worth it. - For making you own planters, you can easily make circular planters using the tubes for the outer part. Choose a similar size cylinder to go inside the tube as your dirt which will stick out a bit. To fix that, copy the tube you placed and move it just slightly enough to cover up the exposed cylinder piece. You may need to do this at least twice. Much easier than creating circular planters with multiple segments, only to realize the two ends don't match up. :p - For placing sidewalks on sloped surfaces, it is far easier to place generic shape platforms and use either an old or cracked concrete texture instead of the actual sidewalks assets. Since the generic platforms are thicker than the sidewalks, they are much easier to place. I did this in my Parking Garage map which has a few sloped streets, and it was far easier to work with the generic shape sidewalks instead of the Watch Dog sidewalks which I normally would use. - You can place the same asset multiple times and it won't affect your memory budget (only placing an asset once affects memory). This includes assets included in pre-decorated buildings. The assets used in some of the pre-decorated houses for example are full of assets you can search for and re-use. This applies to all assets, including AI, weapon pick-ups, and vehicles. I find this tip useful towards the end of a map project when my memory is nearing 100% and I still want to add more before publishing. This website ( list.farcry.info/ ) helps a lot in letting me better manage my memory (the memory is the number at the bottom of each asset icon, next to the yellow bag icon) and therefore put more into my map. Just be sure to sort by budget and allow for the list to load (longer the list = longer load times; try to search by category or keywords to shorten the list). - When placing street lights which use a metal pole, one of the objects I recommend using is the irrigation pipes under Far Cry 4 > Objects > Industrial > Supplies. These pipes when used for street lights (using the light under FC5/Objects/Government/Lighting) will still appear from longer distances. Other metal pipes I've used have poor draw distance and don't take long until they disappear from a distance, leaving the light attachment floating in the air. - When placing the airstrip light for an airport and the airstrip halo light effect that is supposed to go with it, the airstrip light when destroyed doesn't cause the airstrip halo to de-spawn. You'll be stuck with a weird floating halo. It is possible to fix this by adding a script and trigger object. Set up the script and trigger object so that when the airstrip light is destroyed, the airstrip halo would be de-spawned. No more floating halos on your airstrip! You can do this with other destructible items that should also emit light, such as the TV CRT asset (the one that is on). You could place a white omnilight in the front of the TV and add scripting so that the light de-spawns when the TV is destroyed. - I discussed this in a previous video, but since we're discussing urban environment tips, I feel it's fitting to bring it up again. When I place the DLC city buses, I need to find and place the matching cargo door asset as well. A convenient method is to place the bus first and then without moving the cursor I would place the matching door. No need to move the door into the proper spot yourself as the game basically does it itself.

You can place any vegetation you want onto them. Simply go into the objects menu, find the one you want then place it straight onto it. Moving it after its been placed is what causes it to sink to the terrain. If it does move down, delete it and try again
