In a controversial unpublished paper, he found that in San Francisco in 1974, for example half the movies in the movie theaters were French & Italian. Today less than 10% of the movies in the movie theaters in San Francisco are foreign. Americans were more Cosmopolitan back then? Apparently, it's controversial to say this. His paper goes on to say with the rise of cable television in the 1980's Americans began to watch less foreign films, and became more insular. With Showtime and HBO in the 1990's, and other premium cable channels the trend accelerated, and finally in the infamous 21st Century with the rise of Hulu and Netflix and HBOMAX, Americans sadly watched even less foreign films. The independent theatres in America that use to show foreign films all closed by the wayside with the rise of cable television. Cable television put our theatres that showed European films out of business. How provincial. It's bad enough being born in the colonies. The Clay Theatre in San Francisco, for example was the last Independent theater, in San Francisco that showed foreign films exclusively. Many people who moved to San Francisco since the covid pandemic are unaware of this. The Professor goes onto say that after the great plague in the 14th Century we lost a lot of knowledge too and civilization went backwards. .

"n a controversial unpublished paper" Well that's the kiss of death when it comes to credibility in academia. But you casually proceed as if it had 5000 citations on Google Scholar and extrapolate it's non-findings to the fabric of American society LOL

There are right wing parties. It’s those parties with extreme views that will be labelled far right or even far left. I don’t know why people get so upset about labels these days. In the past people would deny that they hold the views/values that are defined as far right/racist/xenophobic etc. Now people openly admit to holding these views but cry about labels.

If the FPÖ would eventually become a part of a future Austrian government they could join the games Orbàn and Fico are playing with the EU. Not exactly a good perspective.

You cannot call them "far right" or even "right" when you compare them with the US they would be left wing, when compare them to the rest of Europe they are more center.

FPÖ is definitely far right, very much in line with Trump´s ideas, they too want "concentration camps" and mass deportation. That´s far right from centre.

@@soundscape26 because the term "far right" means nothing, it is used for everyone these days. It used to be that right was anti gay, anti, abortion and now if you just disagree with the "mainstream" you are "far right", even though most of them are more left than what we used to consider extreme.

Imagine how fast an immigrant would get deported from the US for stabbing a citizen to death. (That is if he wouldn't go straight to death row.) But europe is far right.. yeah whatever.

I think integration is an important part of all countries. It makes sense that a 50 year old can not become Austrian, but if you are born here, even with immigrant parent, there are certain values you have to accept. You do not need to like it, but respect it and advocate change democratically.

When you say 'immigration is causing problems,' it’s important to clarify the type or basis of immigration you’re referring to. I see nothing wrong with students or people who come to work. I've never heard of a PhD killing someone with a knife or software developers stealing from shops.

Well, in terms of different cultures who live in the country, then yes. But in terms of crime rate it would be much better. Personally, I see no problem living with people from different countries, if they follow the law and the general way of live which locals got used to. And, in case they work or study, of course.
