yep, I'm still alive - a lot of folks literally commented asking that during my three month hiatus. Sometimes, friends - you just have to take some time to live life and enjoy the moment :) I had a pretty fun bout of bells palsy where half my face was paralyzed for the better part of a couple months - couldnt hardly talk without lisping and slurring my words. So as much as that would have been entertaining, I opted to keep of the old tubes during that time. I'm sure you all understand.

Reminds me of the $600 one ('75 F150) that I bought in 2004. Needed a carburetor to run right, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and a radiator flush and new tires that made it safe to drive. Yes FEs are rock solid being made in various displacements from 1958 to 1976. They drink a lot of gas but never let you down. The FEs are notorious for exhaust manifold leaks. I avoid power brakes and in the case of 1965-79 trucks I avoid power steering as they are terrible leakers.

My father had a 64 Country Squire, tho with a 289 and " 3 on the tree " with separate overdrive, and an F-100 and an F-250 Camper Special. The F-250 I think he bought because it was reasonably cheap and he didn't realize just what he was buying as he really just wanted a truck (it never hauled a load while he owned it). What I remember about that F-250 was that the suspension was so solid and yet hitting a bump or pothole was never felt in the driver's seat. BTW, the 289s are fairly long-lived too, as long as you take care of them.

I picked up a $500 1976 Chevy C20 with the 292 4 speed. Had been sitting in the back of the farmstead boneyard for ten years. What I found was that the new ethanol fuel turned the color of coffee, and stinks. But I pulled the fuel line off and dropped the intake line from the fuel pump into my gas can under the motor. Disconnected the fuel line at the carb and cranked it over till the “coffee” was out of the line. Hooked back up the line to the carb. Poured a cap full of new gas in the carb, cranked it up. Fired right up. After sitting through ten years of North Dakota weather. These old truck are bullet proof, kinda. They just want attention.😊

I just bought my first vintage ford pickup, a 73 cab chassis 1 ton with a 390 and 11’ flatbed. I’ve always been a diesel guy having 12 valves and ford IDI’s but I instantly fell in love with this thing. In a lot of ways a old carbureted v8 seems a lot more “alive” than a diesel or fuel injected engine. Anyways, it’s ugly as sin, leaks oil and gets gallons per mile but I can’t stop finding excuses to take it out for a ride.

Yep those old Ford FE engines will keep on running all the way up until they throw a lifter. Then the minute it throws a lifter, you yank the camshaft to stick a new camshaft in that old FE and keep on driving it. That was one of two draw back to those engines, was they would last so long you would wear a camshaft out before you needed an engine rebuild. The other was they was prone to Vapor locking due to the heat buildup in the engine compartment.
