We really need a new water management plan for the country to address future flooding problems. If a small country like the Netherlands 🇳🇱 can control their below sea level land, why can’t our government 😡🤬

The Netherlands have a bigger Priority on Humans and Infrstructure - Farmland, the EA are obsesed with enviromental issues issues and trying to avoid having to make a decision they are more concerned with Depressed River Muscles and Hairy Click Beatles yes they do exist.

Setting aside the government angle I think you will find the geological conditions are considerably different. Don’t forget the eastward tilt in Britain of 1 foot per hundred years. Basically Pennines up east coast down and the reduction of fen height when drainage lowers water level - remember the tall street posts illustrated at school that were level when inserted. The Netherlands start from a continual pump programme and no tilt as I understand it. If you want to flood manage the east coast you would need a massive wall and a Wash barrage from North Lincolnshire to the Thames. The cement production would occupy a complete wind farm for a generation or so. It will never happen. We can however insist the river banks are properly maintained and hold government bodies responsible to account via such items as Commons committees. So that covers the government content.

How you maintain your positive demeanour Andrew, is beyond me! And poor Henry appears to be bearing the brunt of the wet weather too. Hope you all come through this with as little damage as possible. You mentioned that 2023 hasn't been the wettest year on your records, but I imagine that the proximity and concentration of all the wet periods, especially towards the back end of the year is what's causing the situation to be as frustrating as it is. Hopefully the High Pressure that’s forecast over the next couple of weeks provides some respite and a chance to get back to or at least closer to "normal" - whatever that is these days!

Andrew. We have now recorded our wettest year since dad started the recording back in 1950 bless him, its now down to me. Interestingly from 1950 to 1999 we have had 6 years of over 1000mm of rain, from 2000 to 2023 we have now had 9 years 0f 1000mm plus. 1950 to 1999 average rainfall 800mm (32 inches) 2000 to present day that average now stands at 1012mm (40.48 inches) a staggering difference and a worrying trend upwards. We are farming just 5 miles west of Salisbury (Wiltshire). 9 miles up the road in the same valley (Nadder valley) a farmer who we do some contracting for recorded 1661mm.(66.4 inches) so on the bright side we are positively dry compared to him however it does flow down the valley towards us.!!! Take care.

Hi Andrew. I wondered if you could help me out. I notice you use glyphosate in the winter months. The guidance of using this chemical is that it is only effective when the unwanted growth is actually growing and should only be applied then. I run a grounds care business and we use glyphosate only in the growing season as a result of this guidance. Do you find this chemical effective in the winter months? Thank you for any response in advance. Sorry that this question is irrelevant to the content and to see you going through this difficult time with so much rain. Knowing how organized you are I would say you are in the best position to get things back on track when things are on the turn. My best regards, Graham
@WardysWaffleAndrewWard
8 ай бұрын
Not a problem at all, only too pleased to help. When weeds are dormant or slow growing you need to up the application rate. This time of year you’d need 4 litres per hectare of a 360 gram/litre glyphosate and make sure you use a good quality one, preferably made by monsanto, be wary of cheap parallel imports. Also add a wetter or water conditioner with it. i use a cheap one called Firebrand at 1 litre / hectare. This lowers the water ph which makes the plant take up the glyphosate better. Also, only apply to a dry leaf. Everything above minimises chance of resistance which is the last thing you want. This time of year everything has to be right but it will take longer to work, maybe a month, depending how cold it is.

Andrew, a belated happy new year to you! I would be interested to hear your view on one of your waffles on the letter that has been sent out by Steve Barclay (Secretary of State E, F & RA). He is blowing his trumpet about the extra money farmers will be getting this year. However, as to be expected (because they never listen) it is still a push away from home produced food to rewarding environmental actions. In my mind they could kill two birds in one stone by getting rid of the EA who are next to useless. If the EA could be replaced by a private company who have professional people running it. Then they would understand that be dealing with the issues that cause the flooding the would improve both the environment and food production!

Hello Dominic, thank you. Happy New Year to you as well. It’s funny, I’ve only just been reading Steve Barclays email and because I have regular zoom calls with Deffra personnel because of Forage Aid, I’ve had more detail. I was going to put something in this Sundays waffle, and still will do after I’ve digested all the emails, but I fully agree there is still the push for the environment above food production. And I can’t believe they are still wanting to pay to help farmers raise water levels in certain areas, unbelievable! Anyway, I will mention it this Sunday, but because I’m going to be concentrating on the floods again, I’m not sure how Much time I can give it because i’ve managed to get Robbie Moore here to look at the badly maintained Rivers. He’s appalled at the photos I’ve sent him of bushes and trees growing out the channel.

@@WardysWaffleAndrewWard Andrew, Just watched Sundays Waffle. Very distressing seeing poor Henry's farm underwater like that especially as it is down to the EA's incompetence. I slightly jumped the gun with me mentioning how useless the EA are in last weeks comment! I think what summed it up for me was the pub landlords comment with how the EA dealt with (or more to point didn't deal with) the the generator running the pump. Just typical of a government body being unable to make a decision about moving it before it disappeared under water. That incompetence costing them thousands in a written off generator.

@noodledoes4309 Where do you get 700 hectares from? This is not ‘a few fields, it’s 2,000 acres, in one location which produces food to keep you and others alive. There’s is millions of acres of land under water the same. So it’s ok with you to flood land, the farmer lose tens of thousands of pounds and not get compensation for saving people’s homes? Also you need to understand the area, Lincoln is up stream, not down stream. Down stream is the sea. Watch update 216, you might learn a few things about land and flooding and river maintenance.
