Grandpa bought our 400 new in 55 and has 20,000 hours and a couple rebuilds under her belt. Such an amazing tractor that's gonna stay in the family for at least another lifetime.

I was able to buy a 400 that was owned by our neighbor. I remember it being delivered by the dealer in 1955. I drove it in the field working for them. The family owned it for 67 years. It has 56 hours on a new 450 overhaul. I am in process of restoring as we speak. We were grain farmers and when I was a kid, we had 4 Ms. This 400 was big deal for me then, and is still my favorite Farmall tractor. You have a real gem. GREAT JOB

My grandfather purchased a farmall 400 in 1955. He liked it so much, he purchased another one in 1956. We still have both of them. He traded an M and two plows for the '56. $4260.00. We're about to restore the '56 like you have done.

Dad and I have a 400. Changing it to 12v and alternator and also installing a carb kit with some governor tweaking rejuvenated the old gal. (Having an 80 year old retired IH mechanic on the phone was awesome learning all the little tricks. Mechanic said if you have everything adjusted right you can take off in road gear with hardly any throttle.) Dad told me the story a neighbor farmer had with his back then brand new 400. It's hilly around where we live and the neighbor pulled out onto the road with a full load of hay. He didn't know the T/A would freewheel pulled back so he had a hair-raising experience barreling down that steep hill. It's the same hill my Dad taught me when I was old enough to just flick our M or 400 into neutral and let gravity take you for nearly half a mile-enough to take you over two smaller hills.

Man that is one nice 400! About the same time frame as you bought years ago, we showed/ pulled tractors. We would buy rebuild and restore mainly the 2 cylinder JD's. I did have one Farmall H at one point. Back when we pulled antique tractors ( before big money got involved) it was always hard to compete with the farmalls and the Oliver's! More cubic inches was hard to handle, but we held our own for many years! Nice to see it restored,looks amazing. We finally sold off the last of ours in 2020 to buy more field friendly tractors for the reclaim of the farm. Do miss them from time to time, although I do have an oliver 770 wide front gas that gets a workout in our process. Thank you for bringing us along, just catching up on some older content! Thank you sir!

Now I'm able to upgrade some of my equipment. It all takes time and the farm is my happy place. Have a good week. It snowed here last night so I'm going to go clean up.

Excellent video, i grew up on a dairy farm south of Rockfall, Illinois, my dad had a Super C, an M , & a 400 identical to this one, & they were all great tractors but the 400 some how got a crack in the block, but it held up the whole time my dad farmed, my brother still has the C , he has a Super M , & bought a different 400 & restored them, they all run great to this day, my dad is now 92 yrs old, my brother bought the farm and more land, he has big equipment but wants to keep the fire burning with the original way we grew up as kids, i watch a lot of these videos because the stories are similar to when i was growing up .... 👍

I agree. But farming out these tractors. The need for more HP and weight for bigger equipment did these tractors in. I hate all the computer teck and emissions in the new tractors. As long as I can I will continue to farm with my out tractors and equipment.
@jayss10

I agree it’s irritating with all the computer nonsense but it’s an absolute must on modern big acreage farms. These guys that are doing 1000+ acres really benefit from the Starfire systems and similar where they can link equipment together and basically autopilot stuff for 95% of a field. Takes a lot of operator fatigue out of the equation. The issue that obviously comes about is that you need a computer engineering degree to fix the damned things, but you can’t have the benefit without the drawback.

I fabricated the alternator bracket myself. I run a GM se10 alternator with a Dodge resistor going to the coil. I had a friend help we it. But now I think you can get a kit from Steiner tractor parts to do the conversion. There maybe some videos here on KZitem on how to do it. I know you can goggle and find wiring diagrams for it. Good luck, you will not regret converting it to 12 volts.
