The H is put to work finally by hooking onto the 4,000 pound roller to pack the freshly graded material. It ran rough a few times through the video, but the carburetor has not yet been serviced. All in all it did ok but it will in the future run a lot better....I hope. The gas tank is not yet completed. Its already been given the electrolysis treatment and is waiting its turn for the chemical sealant. Then of course the wheel weights need to be reinstalled.
This tractor sat in a barn for twenty years or more before I bought it and then it sat another 7 or 8 years waiting its turn for attention. The series of videos covering its journey to this point are in the playlists above. But today's video shows it working the hardest its worked for close to three decades !! More duties for it will be powering the pto driven Belsaw sawmill, the pto driven homebuilt wood splitter, the flat belt driven buzz saw and hauling loads of wood on the '50's farm-built 1936 Chevy dump trailer.
We spent the better part of the afternoon compacting the roadway ahead of the impending wet weather of the Midwest Spring, making at least 15 or 20 rounds on the half mile driveway. You'll notice the way the roller is 'side-shifted' to allow the tractor to remain in the roadbed while the roller itself trails off to the left or right side of the tractor to compact the shoulders of our little driveway.
The day was spent very well rockin' and rollin' and when the rain comes, the washout will be held to a minimum and that's what's important. At the same time we have eliminated the numerous potholes that play the dickens with front end alignment with the Missus' fanciful automobile.
We will be having close to 200 tons of crushed limestone hauled in later in the Spring, so the additional intention of the days exercise was to provide a smooth and secure base for the new coverage. It is never a good suggestion to just fill up or cover over potholes....to properly repair a roadbed, the roadbed needs to be turned up to the depth of the deepest pothole then leveled, crowned and compacted. THEN the new material can be spread and compacted as well. If you merely cover or fill in potholes, they will just bounce the new stone right back out within the first few rain falls because they will hold a pocket of water under the new stone which softens the base and the tires just pound away on it and push the pothole back out bigger than before.
