@@TripHacksDCthere’s actually a crossing that used to be open that allowed trains to transfer from the blue, silver and orange line onto the red line at Farragut and while you take the Farragut crossing you are walking over that tunnel

Yea. The Farragut Crossing is good to use for passenger service. But for Metro train power moves, they use a special track who connects BL,OR and SV Tracks. The same thing with Fort Totten. They have a special track who connects RD to GR/YL Tracks.

I personally find invisible tunnels tricky to navigate; so I do this, but I always bring my invisible map and my invisible flashlight, just in case.

I hadn't realized that's considered one continuous ride and not two separate ones - you'd think metro would just build an underground walk way between the two Farragut stations like they have in London, but hey, it's Metro :)

In this case it's probably not Metro's fault. National Park Service has opposed the plan for a tunnel on the grounds that the square would have to be dug up to build the tunnel and would kill some old trees.

@@TripHacksDC I always wondered why they never built an underground tunnel like many subways in the world have.

Check out The Great Society Subway by by Zachary M. Schrag for lots of history and questions about why things were done the way they were. Part of the reason the red line on the western side is so deep underground is because of Rock Creek Park and the need to tunnel under rather than through it.

@@TripHacksDC Thank you. I was around when they built it. The original concept map use to be in the basement of the Dept of Transportation. I rode on the concept cars for metro at Transpo 72 that was held at Dulles airport. Look that up if you want to see one of the coolest exabits held in DC.

I mean, London has a lot of OSI’s (out-of-station interchanges) as well. This is no different than those.

Not so much of an invisible tunnel as an effective path between two stations

There's something similar in the Toronto subway, but there's actually an underground tunnel between the tracks. Because the change at the interchange station is usually faster, you typically use the tunnel just in case. I'm referring to Spadina and Saint George stations. It's like merging the two Farragut stations and building an actual tunnel between them.

This is actually referred to as a "virtual tunnel" by WMATA, as seen on the smartrip statement when you do this. Source: did this daily back in 2015-2016

So how does the charge work? Do you use the same card for it to not charge you twice?

Yes, if you use another Metro service shortly after leaving a bus or train, it doesn’t charge you twice as long as you do it within a certain time.

I have walked (out-of-station transfer) between Gallery Place and Metro Center instead of riding the Red Line one station. Took under 3 1/2 minutes tapping out of Gallery Place and back into Metro Center. This was on a night when RD was badly delayed (single-tracking?)

You didn’t adjust the audio delay to the video. When recording audio, the signal processing always results in latency that must be re-adjusted back on time. For this re-alignment most people start their videos with the clap of the famous clapperboard in film or just one’s hands, and match up the av that way. But even without this you can just scoot the audio back until the difference is lost and then continue until it’s now coming ahead of the video, and then just split the difference between both and you’ll be golden. Or if your program tells you the latency in ms you can scoot it back accordingly
