Welcome back to R2T! We hope you enjoyed episode 1 and we’re sure you’re going to enjoy this episode also!
There once was a time when only does of immense privilege could partake in the fashion world whether that be from a consumer or a producer perspective. However, fast forward to today fashion has become a place where people from all different backgrounds call home. With careers in fashion becoming more sought after and slightly more accessible, non-traditional routes of entering it have become more popular. The linear journey of studying fashion, getting an internship somewhere and then working for or starting your own brand doesn’t seem to be the only route to the industry anymore.
Such a change has led to questions being raised around whether academically studying fashion is even worth it. With University fees rising year on year and those from non-traditional fashion backgrounds thriving in the industry i.e Pharrell Williams reaching the pinnacle of fashion at Louis Vuitton, thoughts and feelings around studying fashion have reached fever pitch!
To discuss this topic we called on the help of fashion students Joe Brimicombe and Arora Georgia.
Joe Brimicombe is a recent graduate from the University of Westminster. Graduating in BA menswear designer, Joe has already made a name for himself in the industry due to his up-cycled pieces becoming popular within culture. With his brand being seen on musicians such as Ghetts Jason Derulo, Big Sean and many more, to athletes like Amadou Onana and Thanasis Antetokounmpo.
Arora Georgia is a fashion knitwear student currently studying at Central Saint Martins. After interest in one of one knitwear pieces she made for herself, Arora started her eponymous brand in 2021. The brand grew in popularity with her handmade knitted trousers, balaclava’s and hand warmers becoming a favourite amongst style influencers.
The pair shared their thoughts and feelings on this in a very transparent way. The conversation ended up centring on topics such as class and privilege with this being this playing a major role in one’s ability to pursue a degree in fashion.
If you are thinking about pursuing a career in fashion then this is a must watch!
We hope you thoroughly enjoy this conversation, let us know your thoughts in the comments!
